The Victorian Prison within Lincoln Castle.

White Woman

Location: Lincoln (Lincolnshire) - Victorian Prison, Lincoln Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Woman unknown, footsteps in October 2003
Further Comments: This pale woman is thought to have been a former prisoner who died during her stay. Witnesses have also reported the sounds of doors slamming and keys jangling in the area. One witness heard footsteps and the rustling of a dress - when they looked around, no one could be seen.

Mary of Guise

Location: Linlithgow (Lothian) - Linlithgow Palace
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1999
Further Comments: Accompanied by a slight smell of perfume, this phantom lady in a white dress has on occasion been mistaken for a real person. Mary Queen of Scots is also reported to frequent the chapel, and Margaret Tudor haunts Queen Margaret's Bower.

White Woman

Location: Lismore (County Waterford) - Glencairn Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The abbey was once haunted by a young woman dressed in white. She was seen and heard moving in the upper part of the building, though it is said the haunting stopped once a Major discovered a heart in a metal box in the attic and gave it a proper burial.

White Lady

Location: Little Haven (Dyfed) - Castle Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This spook is reportedly a woman whose body was found on the nearby beach. A long dead cat is also reported to play on the beds at night, while a man in 'modern' dress is said to slowly materialise from the feet up.

Location: Littlewick Green (Berkshire) - Boundary Elm, Green Lane, Cold Harbour and Knowl Hill

Further Comments: This female apparition closely follows the same route as she calmly drifts through the area.

Rosina Buckman

Location: Llanbadrig (Gwynedd) - Area around Wylfa power station
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1964 onwards
Further Comments: Rosina's ashes were moved when the power station was constructed on the site of her old house, and her pallid wraith now drifts around the vicinity. During the construction of the power station, several workers are said to have quit their jobs after encountering a phantom woman in white.

White Lady

Location: Llangennith (West Glamorgan) - Main road through village
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century? 06:30h.
Further Comments: A motorist reported almost running over (or through) a white lady that stepped out on the road in front of him.

White Lady

Location: Llanidloes (Powys) - A470, 'Red Bridge' area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: May 1973
Further Comments: This ghostly figure has appeared several times, manifesting in the middle of the road only to pass through incoming traffic. One male driver stated that the female form looked at him with sad eyes as she passed through the bonnet of his car.

White Woman

Location: Llanvihangel Crucorney (Gwent) - Between Llanvihangel Court and Lady Wood
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown, but only at midnight
Further Comments: This pallid figure moves from the hall and disappears into the nearby wood. There have also been sightings of a short man dressed in green.

White Lady

Location: Llanvithyn (aka Llanveithin and Llanmeuthin) (South Glamorgan) - Former monastery (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The monastery was thought haunted by a woman whose husband had sought shelter there - he was finally found, had his leg cut off and was finally bricked up alive within the walls. Centuries after the event, a legless skeleton was discovered in the building, although legend does not state whether this prevented the female phantom from returning.

White Lady

Location: Longforgan (Perth and Kinross) - HMP Castle Huntly, open prison

Further Comments: Her white robes flowing as she walks, the white lady is said to leapt from the battlements to escape punishment after being caught with a manservant. A young boy that also haunts the site is thought to be Richard Paterson who drowned in the Tay in 1939.

Lady in White

Location: Longham (Dorset) - River Stour

Further Comments: A woman in a flowing white dress is said to haunt the banks of the river close to the village.

White Lady

Location: Longnor (Shropshire) - Black Pool (now filled in)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1881
Further Comments: This white lady drowned in the pool, and now dances around the area. One man who saw the entity thought she was real and tried to dance with her, only to find his arms passed straight through her body.

Tied Figure

Location: Lossiemouth (Moray) - Unidentified manor house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Likely to be pre-twentieth century
Further Comments: A manor house in Lossiemouth was said to be haunted by a woman draped in white with a heavily scarred throat and her hands tied in chains behind her back. The figure was said to appear every night, and because of the stories, the site remained empty for years before being sold at a highly discounted price.

White Lady

Location: Lower Boscaswell (Cornwall) - Pendeen Vau, aka Pendeen Fogou
Type: Legend
Date / Time: 21 or 22 December (Winter Solstice) (reoccurring)
Further Comments: This figure in white holds a red rose in her mouth and turns and walks into the fogou once spotted. Some say to see her will bring misfortune, and anyone foolish enough to follow her... well, no one as yet has followed her.

Headless Man

Location: Lulsley (Hereford & Worcester) - Sandy Lane (between Osebury Rock and the river)
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: One folk story says this road is home to several entities that appear to travellers, including a headless man, a white horse, a black dog, and a sad woman with flowing hair who wears a white robe.

Ann

Location: Luton (Bedfordshire) - Cock and Bull public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A white figure glimpsed here is thought to be the ghost of Ann, murdered in the pub so long ago that the date has been forgotten. She has been known to talk to visitors who are unaware she is a phantom. The figure may be the same entity which has been seen on the street outside, moving from the pub towards nearby shops.

Factory Worker

Location: Luton (Bedfordshire) - Skefco ball bearing factory

Date / Time: 1972
Further Comments: On several occasions the ghost of a white woman managed to unnerve workers at the plant. She was thought to be the spirit of a former worker who died nine years previous.

Woman in Gown

Location: Lydford Gorge (Devon) - White Lady Falls (aka Whitelady Waterfall)
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A phantom white woman in a long white gown is said to haunt the base of the waterfall.

Location: Lynmouth (Devon) - Bridge Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This pale figure was seen standing over a guest's bed. She has also been observed in the bar.

White Lady

Location: Lytham (Lancashire) - Lytham Hall

Further Comments: One of several ghosts to be found in the hall, this unknown Clifton family member has been seen in various parts of the grounds. One bedroom is said to be particularly haunted, the manifestation complete with clanking chains and stomping feet.

White Woman

Location: Macclesfield (Cheshire) - Kendel Road (area known locally as the Birdy)

Further Comments: This area is reputed to be haunted by a white woman with no feet.

Young Girl

Location: Maddington (Wiltshire) - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Wearing a long white dress, this young girl barely in her teens has been reported in several parts of the village. It is thought she drowned in a flood which swept through the area in the mid-nineteenth century.

Hound

Location: Mainsriddle (Dumfries and Galloway) - Road between village and Prestonmill, area once known as Dairymaid's Hollow
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Pre-1890
Further Comments: A black dog which was said to haunt this area was once heard invisibly passing by three women, although one of them speculated the sound may have been a peacock. A woman in white was also seen by a doctor using the road.

White Lady

Location: Manchester (Greater Manchester) - Golborne, Castle Hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: August 1960
Further Comments: This female form causes trouble on the roads as she drifts out in front on oncoming traffic. Some witnesses say the entity is more like a monk than a woman and a cyclist who spotted the figure in the road in 1960 said the phantom figure was twice the height of a normal person.
