Ghostly Women in White and White Women

Two Ladies

Location: Ettington (Warwickshire) - Ettington Park Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 14/15 March 2005
Further Comments: Two female figures haunt the grounds of this hotel; a lady in grey walks near the staircase where she was killed, and the other (dressed in white) walks the terrace. Two children can be seen and heard crying, standing by the river that runs through the grounds. In March of 2000, a man staying at the hotel reported seeing and feeling a strange concretion of 'baleful' energy in his room, while in a photograph taken in October 2014, an amorphous shape appeared above someone's head. As a side note, the building was used in the original film of 'The Haunting'.

White Lady

Location: Ewenny (South Glamorgan) - Areas known as White Lady's meadow and White Lady's Lane

Further Comments: This white woman was said to point towards Ewenny, where treasure was supposed to be hidden. One legend says that a local man offered to help the ghost. The white woman asked the man to hold her hands, which he did until startled by a dog. Scared by the dog, the man snatched his hands back - the ghost screamed 'I'll be bound for another seven years!' before vanishing.

Further Comments: This ghost is likely to be responsible for the cold spot located in the moat.

White Lady

Location: Fakenham (Norfolk) - 4 Green Lane
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1975
Further Comments: A family were terrified by poltergeist activity, which included the entity tightening a crucifix necklace around someone's neck. Unusually, a phantom woman in white was also seen on the site by several people, including a neighbour.

White Lady

Location: Fleet (Hampshire) - Bagwell Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A ghostly white lady haunts this country lane - she is also said to cross a field and vanish into a pond.

Knight in Shining Armour

Location: Forest of Dean (Gloucestershire) - Saint Briavel's castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Woman seen 1998
Further Comments: Seen in the grounds and along corridors of this former castle (now a hostel) a figure in armour has been known to appear. It is not known if he is responsible for the disembodied footsteps along the walkways. A young child has been heard to cry in the King's Hall (where the bones of a baby were once found walled up), and finally a ghostly woman in white was spotted on the staircase in 1998.

White Woman

Location: Foulkesmill, Horetown (County Wexford) - Private residence
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late 1970s
Further Comments: This phantom woman, dressed in a white dress with pink trim and holding a broom, manifested to a witness and floated through a bedroom. Another witness had a similar encounter in an adjoining room.

Further Comments: Though not seen recently, the stories of the white lady still exist.


Jack the Runner.

Construction of Gallows

Location: Glamis (Angus) - Glamis Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1880 (Gallows heard)
Further Comments: Not shy of more than a few hauntings, Glamis can claim the following... The sounds of a set of gallows being constructed, Lady Glamis drifting in mist around the clock tower, the unknown ghost in the 'Haunted Room' which caused a previous owner to faint when he went to investigate the mysterious sounds contained within, a white lady that drifts the corridors, 'Jack the Runner' who's long legs carry him down the same corridors, a black page boy that quickly appears and disappears near a sitting room, a pale girl who is dragged away by an invisible force in the courtyard, a giant in armour that stands over and looks down on people in bed, and a re-enacted murder in the parlour.

Location: Glasfryn, Lleyn Peninsula (Gwynedd) - House, lake and nearby field
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: One story says that this area is haunted by the ghost of a woman in white who accidently flooded the surrounding lands.

Nelly

Location: Glen of Imaal (County Wicklow) - Coolmoney House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The slim teenager in a white dress which haunts this property on army land had the nickname Nelly. Stories claimed Nelly to be a murdered servant.

Woman in White

Location: Godley Green (Buckinghamshire) - Road from Gee Cross
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: 1906
Further Comments: Not a 'normal' post-mortem apparition; a woman returning to see her ill brother watched as a ghostly white woman left the building in which her brother lay. She soon discovered her brother had died seconds before her arrival.

Location: Godolphin Cross (Cornwall) - Godolphin House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This phantom line of people was reported walking past the building. A white woman, once married to the First Earl of Godolphin, is also said to climb out from a closet and walk along the terrace.

White Lady

Location: Grantham (Lincolnshire) - Angel & Royal Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Drifting down the corridors of the upper regions of the building, this figure may be responsible for the poltergeist like actions in one of the bedrooms.

Location: Great Eccleston (Lancashire) - Cross House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This pale woman was seen several times in the house.

No Locks

Location: Great Staughton (Cambridgeshire) - Unnamed farm on the moors
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Owners of a farmhouse here were said to have once removed all the locks and bars from their doors, as a white lady would open all the doors at night, no matter how securely they were left closed. A workman called in to mend the roof encountered the ghost and refused to finish the job - another builder had to complete the repairs.

Dead Woman in Night Gown

Location: Gresford (Clwyd) - Little Acton Hill (now Bluebell Lane), between Gresford and Wrexham
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: Nineteenth century
Further Comments: Two men walking along this dark road at night were scared by an approaching figure dressed in white. As it came ever closer, the men were relieved to recognise it as the wife of one of the men. However, the figure suddenly vanished - the two Welshmen rushed back to the house of the woman, only to find her dead.


The Maid of Rokeby.

Maid of Rokeby

Location: Greta Bridge (Durham) - Waters where the two rivers meet
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This entity, dressed in white flowing clothes, patrols the banks of the river after dusk. A monk is also reported to do the same, having taken in own life in the river many years previous.

Smashed Furniture

Location: Guildford (Surrey) - Sutton Place
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The sounds of furniture being smashed can be heard here, though investigations can never find anything broken. Glimpses of a woman in white have been reported by staff, though she quickly vanishes.

White Lady

Location: Gunton (Norfolk) - Gunton Park and House (partly destroyed by fire in 1882)
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Prior to death in Suffield family
Further Comments: This ghostly pale woman heard screaming when a death is imminent in the family. She has also been spotted running across the grounds.

White Lady Who Slaps

Location: Hadleigh (Essex) - Castle ruins
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Late summer, 2009
Further Comments: Legend tells of the story of a milkmaid who met a ghost at the castle. The white lady requested that the milkmaid returned the following night, but the girl stayed away. The next day, the white lady hunted down the girl and slapped her for disobedience! More recently, a jogger spotted a woman in a white dress (possibly a wedding gown) standing in the path ahead him. The woman turned and started running just ahead of the jogger. The woman in white suddenly vanished on a bend on the path, and the jogger felt the hair on the back of his neck stand up.

Date / Time: 21 June or 24 June (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Seen by local fishermen (even though they cannot remember the exact date they witnessed the phenomenon), the white lady's history is unknown.


A nun haunts roads in the area.

Nun

Location: Hanham Abbots (Somerset) - General area, but mainly around the church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The roads of this small village are reportedly haunted by the shade of a nun. A white woman also stalks the area, though this may be the same entity.

Lady Jane Stanhope

Location: Harrington (Northamptonshire) - Tollemache Arms public house, fields behind the building
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Prior to personal disaster
Further Comments: This white lady, condemned to haunt the area where she murdered her gardener after he accidentally killed a plant, only appears to those who are due to die within a few months.

Location: Harston (Cambridgeshire) - Area between the Queens Head public house and Mill Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This phantom woman is likely to be the same suicidal figure that haunts elsewhere in the village.
