Ghostly Women in White and White Women

Woman in White

Location: Oare (Wiltshire) - Road through the village
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A bus driver passing through the village was left unnerved after watching a woman dressed in white cross the road ahead of him. She disappeared suddenly.

White Woman

Location: Old Catton (Norfolk) - White Woman Lane, and George Hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Doomed to repeat her actions for reasons unknown, the woman in white has been seen on countless occasions in the area. A lad out on his early morning paper round saw her crossing a field, vanishing without warning.

Robert Leigh

Location: Old Cleeve (Somerset) - Bardon House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1700s onwards
Further Comments: One of many ghosts belonging to this building, Leigh was reported to walk around the grounds carrying an unknown person's head under one arm. A woman in white rustling silk glides along the corridors of the building, the sad sounds of a harpsichord can be heard, and on occasion a black dog lurks outside.

White Woman

Location: Oldmeldrum (Aberdeenshire) - Meldrum House Hotel

Further Comments: Only appearing in front of children, this pale shade walks the hotel.

Faceless Monk

Location: Ollerton (Nottinghamshire) - Rufford Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This giant figure is said to have had a skull for a head, a result of black magic rituals carried out in days gone by. He has made at least one witness drop dead of shock (although the death was also said to have been caused by a phantom old lady in black). The grounds are also haunted by a white lady, gliding effortlessly along.

Former Master with Hounds

Location: Oulton (Norfolk) - High House (now Manor House), Oulton Broad
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Even though this place has been exorcised at least twice, the building still appears to possess several ghosts. One former owner has been seen dressed in traditional hunting gear, with his hounds around his feet. A white lady reportedly climbs the staircase located in the older part of the house, while the sounds associated with an old carriage have been heard coming from outside. Finally, poltergeist like activity, such as unusual electrical interference, has been reported.

Lady Constance

Location: Outer London: Bexley (Greater London) - Hall Place
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Constance unknown, Edward in October 1931, poltergeist 1950
Further Comments: One of several ghosts reported here, Lady Constance killed herself after watching her husband die when a stag gored him. Her pale white shade now frequents the grounds. Lady Limerick reported seeing the ghostly Edward, the Black Prince during the First World War, and he popped up again in 1931. The spirit of a servant haunts the loft, while a poltergeist outbreak in 1950 resulted in furniture being tossed around.

White Woman

Location: Outer London: Brentford (Greater London) - Banks of the Grand Union Canal
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1935
Further Comments: A torso of a female murder victim was discovered here, with her legs found in a train carriage at Waterloo. Her ghost remained in the area for a while, manifesting as a tall woman wearing a white dress.

White Lady

Location: Panshanger Woods (Hertfordshire) - Area near an abandoned decoy air shelter
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: December 1990?
Further Comments: This area is rumoured to be haunted by a woman who committed infanticide.

White Woman

Location: Passage West (County Cork) - Road towards Cork, and other roads through village
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early twentieth century?
Further Comments: Not much is known about the phantom woman who was said to haunt the road to Cork. A phantom coach and horses haunted other roads in the area, the noise of its passing causing household furnishings to shake.

Further Comments: This pale creature flitters around the building, having died of a broken heart.

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Dressed all in white, this woman committed suicide in the pond where her ghost now vanishes.

Woman in White

Location: Penn (Buckinghamshire) - Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s
Further Comments: A female phantom is said to have left the church via the east gate and walk down the hill. Author Eddie Brazil speculated that the phantom was Ruth Ellis, the last woman to have been executed in England.

White Lady

Location: Penn (Buckinghamshire) - Crown Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A local legend says that this area is haunted by a white lady and a small child. Minor polt activity is also reported, such as rattling doors, flickering lights and glasses being smashed. The presence is described as playful.

White Woman

Location: Perth (Perth and Kinross) - Huntingtower Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: No one really has any idea who this phantom could be, though her appearance is said to warn against approaching bad luck and can bring about improved health and fortune. Some reports say she is green, rather than white.

Thomas Hunter

Location: Peterborough (Cambridgeshire) - Museum
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Anzac during the 1970s, others unknown
Further Comments: Sergeant Thomas Hunter, with the Anzacs during the First World War, died in the building 31 July 1916 when it was a hospital. Hunter was last seen drifting up the staircase, though he is blamed for moving items around the building at night or placing icy cold hands on people. Other entities said to haunt here include a scruffy man in the cellar, a white woman in the upper part of the building, a young girl in the former operating theatre, and a phantom Roman soldier who stands by a sword that is on display.

Pale Lady

Location: Peterborough (Cambridgeshire) - Orton Hall Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Staff and visitors have reported seeing a phantom white lady around this building.

Woman in White

Location: Plymouth (Devon) - Geriatric wards, Mount Gould Hospital
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Varies
Further Comments: These wards are reputed to be built on the site of a battle and numerous unexplained occurrences are said to have happened. One male staff member reported a white lady who disappeared into a room. On investigation, the room was found empty, but the patient the man was standing beside at the time of the sighting died before morning, even though he was not obviously unwell.

Further Comments: This park is said to be haunted by a figure wearing a habit near the gates of the lodge, a white lady who drowned in a lake while eloping, and a strange animal with very large eyes.

Further Comments: Reported to float above the castle ruins, this phantom white lady could be Jane de Afan, the last occupant of the castle.

Further Comments: This phantom woman appears on or near the castle mound, located close to Saint Mary's churchyard.

Lady in Brown

Location: Portland (Dorset) - Portland Hotel, Portland Square (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1980
Further Comments: Six sailors stayed at this hotel after their ship was unable to leave the docks due to bad weather. After spending time in the bar, the sailors headed to their rooms. Two of the men spotted a woman wearing a long brown Victorian style dress with a white bonnet and shawl on her shoulders standing outside of a room. The figure disappeared before being seen by the other four men.

Man in Purple Cloak

Location: Portrush (County Antrim) - Dunluce Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Named as either Peter Carey (an English invader) or Richard de Burgh (Earl of Antrim), this ethereal figure now walks around the broken towers of the castle. A white lady (possibly Mave Roe) also haunts the place; she died of a broken heart after being denied marrying her true love. Another story tells that, during a fierce storm, the castle's kitchens collapsed into the sea - the screams of the staff can be heard as they forever fall to their doom.

Grey Figure

Location: Powderham (Devon) - St Clement's church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1939
Further Comments: This entity, clad in a grey cloak, is seen entering the churchyard before vanishing. A white lady has also been reported more recently on the site.

Woman in Dress

Location: Radcliffe on Trent (Nottinghamshire) - Grounds of Holme Pierrepont Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1970s
Further Comments: This lady wearing a white flowing dress has been reported quietly drifting around the grounds.
