Ghostly Women in White and White Women

Monks

Location: Tewkesbury (Gloucestershire) - Tewkesbury Abbey

Further Comments: Seen both inside and out, these figures drift forlornly about. Doors also open and close unaided by human hand, while the churchyard is said to be haunted by a screaming white woman.

Further Comments: This former pet has been seen on the landing, though it is not known whether the white woman who haunts a bedroom is its mistress.

Lady in White

Location: Thames Ditton (Surrey) - Home of Compassion church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Appearing quite real and substantial, the room that this sad shade haunts remained locked up for many years. She could be one of the nuns who once worked in the building.

Lady in White

Location: Thringstone (Leicestershire) - A512, near Grace Dieu Priory

Further Comments: The pale spectral form of a woman has been reported on the roadside near the ruins of the priory. She was last seen by a police officer in 1961.

Whistling Ghost

Location: Tintern (Gwent) - Anchor Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s?
Further Comments: One of the spirits here can be heard playing what sounds like a tin whistle, while the other takes the form of a white lady who searches the building for her missing son.

White Lady

Location: Tollesbury (Essex) - Road leading to the drive of Gorwell Hall

Further Comments: Seen walking in this area, the lady is believed to be heading towards Gorwell Hall, the place where she died after having her throat cut.

White Lady

Location: Totnes (Devon) - Dartington Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mostly unknown, but cloaked figure October 1976 and circa March 1995
Further Comments: This pale figure is said to be one of a handful of ghosts reported here over the years, normally seen in the garden. A woman who starved to death in a bedroom and an old nurse also continue to reside here, while a headless horseman has been reported just outside the grounds of the building. In 1995 a member of staff spotted a glowing man wearing a cloak who faded away, remarkably like an event in 1976 where a young man watched a cloaked figure wearing a tricorn hat glide silently across the road outside the hall before passing effortlessly over the hedgerow.

Further Comments: A phantom woman dressed in white is reputed to haunt this area, possibly the same entity from the nearby Dartington Hall.

Further Comments: The ghostly lady that haunts the village has a connection to an old farmhouse, although the exact details are not known.

Young Girl in White Dress

Location: Upminster (Essex) - Upminster Golf Club
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Believed to have been kidnapped, raped, and finally bricked up behind a wall in the 1600's, this white woman is said to haunt the first floor hallway of the club.

Mrs Amphlett

Location: W1 (Greater London) - Hill Street, Mayfair
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: 24 November 1779
Further Comments: In his home along this street, Lord Lyttleton woke and saw a woman in white standing by his bed (named by some as being a Mrs Amphlett) who warned him he would be dead within three days. At 11pm on the third day, he dropped dead into his butler's arms at Pitt Place, in Epsom. The illustration is Lyttleton's encounter from the publication 'The Astrologer of the Nineteenth Century'.

Further Comments: A woman in a white nightdress vanished when a child asked 'mummy?'.

Panicking Lady

Location: Wadsley (South Yorkshire) - Common land
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: The hours leading up to midnight
Further Comments: This white woman has been observed darting around, with body language suggesting she is in blind panic.

White Woman

Location: Wargrave (Berkshire) - Gaunt cottage
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: An owner of the cottage claimed it was haunted by this lady in white.

Murder Victim

Location: Warrington (Cheshire) - Bewsey Old Hall

Further Comments: His life snuffed out at some point in the 1930s, this shade has remained earthbound since. The hall may also be haunted by a white Lady, thought to be Lady Isabella le Botelor.

Further Comments: A phantom white woman is said to occasionally cross the road here.

Location: Wellow (Somerset) - St Julien's Well

Date / Time: Before a death of the Lord of Hungerford
Further Comments: This phantom white woman would materialise to give warning of encroaching death.

Location: West Harptree (Somerset) - Gournay Court
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This pallid female would travel the building, ending her journey on the balcony where she would disappear.

George

Location: Westcliff on Sea (Essex) - Palace Theatre, currently an arts centre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: George has been reported sitting next to patrons during performances - they claim to have felt someone take up position next to them, though the entity remains invisible while seated. George is said to be the theatre manager who hanged himself from the fly floor due to financial difficulties just after the building opened in 1912. A white woman has been seen in the building, but it is generally agreed that these are two different forces, rather than the same ghost.

Young Woman

Location: Weston (Hertfordshire) - Road near Lannock Hill

Date / Time: November 1972, around 23:30h
Further Comments: The phantom figure of a woman in white was seen by a husband and wife as they drove out of Weston. It is thought that the phantom is a girl who drowned on her wedding day.

Old Soldiers

Location: Westonzoyland (Somerset) - Sedgemoor Battlefield
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 06 July (reoccurring)
Further Comments: The spirits here reportedly include voices that call out to witnesses over the nearby River Carey, and horsemen who gallop silently along. People have also reported pockets of cold air, and watching a white woman glide over the marsh, near where her lover was murdered by Royalists. On the anniversary of the battle, sounds of fighting have been heard.

Hooded Woman

Location: Wimborne St Giles (Dorset) - St Giles Estate

Date / Time: Unknown - nineteenth century
Further Comments: A phantom woman in white, with a hood covering her face, was seen to rush into a hedge. Following this, the sounds of a horse and cart could be heard travelling through woodland, though nothing could be seen.

Tall Man

Location: Winchester (Hampshire) - Private house along Quarry Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s?
Further Comments: A tall man wearing a black cloak, a woman dressed in white, and a figure resembling a nun are all said to have haunted this property. Two exorcisms failed to remove the entities.

Location: Woburn (Bedfordshire) - The Inn (was the Bedford Arms Inn)

Further Comments: The misty white lady is not alone in her haunting of this building. A ghostly figure is also reported to sit by the fireplace smoking a pipe, a little phantom dog by his side.

White Lady Forewarning Death

Location: Wolterton (Norfolk) - Wolterton Hall, 3 miles northwest from Blickling
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown - possibly 1894?
Further Comments: Appearing to warn of trouble or a death in the family, the white lady is said to be a member of the Scamler family who once owned the hall.
