Ghostly Women in White and White Women

Suicidal Leap

Further Comments: Here a white lady has been seen throwing herself off the bridge, but like so many other ghost stories, the reason behind it is unclear.

White Woman

Location: Hathersage (Derbyshire) - Highlow Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early twentieth century
Further Comments: A farmer reported seeing this pale spectre on several moonlit nights crossing the stable yard - he would always tip his cap to her! The ghost was also observed entering the front door in the hall itself and drifting up the staircase. The rustling of her dress could be heard moving down corridors at night. Another phantom reported her is the ghost of a mason caught playing dice instead of working - he was executed!

White Lady

Location: Hathersage (Derbyshire) - Vicarage
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 28 February (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Even though the phantom white lady has not been observed for around one hundred years, she still opens a single door on one night per annum. A 1927 newspaper report claimed the figure to be Charlotte Bronte and that the appearance upset the family's dog, although the vicar denied the story.

Dragging

Location: Hayfield (Derbyshire) - South Head Farm, and surrounding area
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A woman was murdered by her lover; her body was dragged down the stairs before being dumped in a pool at Stoney Ford. Many people have reputedly heard the bumps of her body as it descends the staircase. The area around the farm is said to be haunted by a woman in white, most likely to be the murder victim in a state of unrest.

Jolly Fat Man

Location: Hemel Hempstead (Hertfordshire) - Old King's Arms public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This jovial chap was seen laughing away as he sat on a bed. A white female form has also been reported on site.


What happens to a ghost if their house is destroyed?

White Lady

Location: Hey Houses (Lancashire) - Fancy Lodge (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This small cottage was haunted by a lady in white, who would vanish if anyone came too close.

Woman's Singing

Location: Hickling (Norfolk) - Hickling Broad, south of village
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 01 June (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Once a year a gentle female voice can be heard singing. This could be the Woman in White, seen punting from one side for the Broad to another, heading towards a mill. Another ghost is associated with the broad; a drummer is said to be a Napoleonic soldier who drowned while skating across the ice, en route for a secret rendezvous with his girlfriend, can sometimes be heard.

Location: Higher Green (Lancashire) - Peel Hall Farm

Further Comments: The area around this farm was said to be haunted by a drifting white woman.

Waving White Lady in a Coach

Location: Hockley (Essex) - Road outside the church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: August (possibly) (reoccurring)
Further Comments: After losing control of the horses, a coach driver and his female passenger died. Now, the phantom vehicle is seen outside the church; the white woman in the carriage waves at witnesses before the coach pulls away and the accident is repeated.

White Lady

Location: Hockwold cum Wilton (Norfolk) - Hockwold Hall

Further Comments: The gates to this hall are reportedly haunted by a white lady who has unnerved several drivers through the village.


The ghostly Juliet appears once a year.

Juliet Tewsley, Her Love Unrequited

Location: Holywell (Cambridgeshire) - Ye Olde Ferryboat Inn, gravestone in bar
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 17 March (Reoccurring)
Further Comments: Juliet took her own life after being jilted by a lover. The pub was later built over her grave, and she is now seen in the form of a white lady, appearing near the Ferry Boat Inn and walking towards the banks of the river on the date of her death.

Rebecca

Location: Horton (North Yorkshire) - Bracken Hall, village green, and surrounding moor land
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Weather Dependent: Stormy nights
Further Comments: Murdered the day before her wedding by her fiancee, Rebecca now appears in her white dress in protest over her rough treatment.

Party Girl

Location: Houghton Regis (Bedfordshire) - Drury Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This phantom young woman in a white party dress is reported to be barefoot.

Woman in Nightdress

Location: Hove (Sussex) - Private residence, Bigwood Avenue
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s - early 2000s
Further Comments: Several residents and at least one visitor spotted a phantom woman in a white nightdress during their stay in this house. Footsteps were also heard on the site, doors would slam shut, and one person found themselves locked in a room. One of the children injured themselves trying to float down the stairs like their 'friend'.


Gippeswyk Hall, Ipswich.

White Lady

Location: Ipswich (Suffolk) - Gippeswyk Hall (currently occupied by Red Rose Chain)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Nights of the full moon (reoccurring)
Further Comments: This ghostly white lady has been seen by several witnesses in the upper part of the hall. One person reported a strange mist emerging from the chimney, though no fires were burning within.

Waiting Woman

Location: Isfield (Sussex) - Lavender Line railway station
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Summer evenings (reoccurring), last seen 1990s
Further Comments: This railway museum is haunted by a woman in white who is said to wait for a lover who never returns home. This Victorian woman later took her own life by throwing herself under a train.

Location: Kegworth (Leicestershire) - Red Lion public house

Further Comments: The temperature is said to drop sharply as the phantom white lady materialises. One workman fled the site after encountering her.

White Lady

Location: Kegworth (Leicestershire) - The Hermitage
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This phantom white lady, quite possibly a nun, was said to live in harmony with a former owner (a Doctor Bedford). She was seen on the landing and near the staircase. It may be fair to speculate that a white lady that haunts several other local buildings may be the same entity.

Walled Up

Location: Keighley (West Yorkshire) - East Riddlesden Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: When they were discovered in each other' arms, the wife of the Hall's owner and her secret lover were forcefully separated - she was locked in her bedroom and he bricked up behind a wall. They both starved to death. The wife now manifests as the Grey Lady and ascends the staircase, and the lover peers out of a window at passers-by. A white lady also haunts the site, as does a Highlander, and a coachman who walks on the surface of the lake looking for his sunken coach.

White Lady

Further Comments: A female member of the Schivas family was hanged from the bridge after she refused to betray her husband. Her shade was said to haunt the area of her death.

White Woman

Location: Kidderminster (Hereford & Worcester) - Ye Olde Seven Stars, Coventry Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: This ghostly figure was seen standing by the bar, as if waiting to be served. Her presence was also reported at a table.

White Lady

Location: Kilbryde (Stirling) - Kilbryde castle and chapel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown - late nineteenth century?
Further Comments: A gamekeeper who spotted a woman's face at the window of the empty castle quickly gathered assistance to discover who the intruder was. The men found nothing, and so the white lady was blamed for the sighting. The ghostly lady was also seen by others at the chapel; an old blacksmith tried to speak to her, causing the phantom to disappear.

Bloodied Woman

Location: Kilbryde (Stirling) - Kilbryde Castle and Glen
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Fifteenth or sixteenth century
Further Comments: A young lady of the Cromlix family fell in love with Sir Malise Graham (known as the Black Knight of Kilbryde), who returned the feelings by murdering her and hiding the body. The woman's ghost returned, dressed in white and covered in blood, beckoning any witness who spotted her to approach. Most ran away, until one man did as the ghost requested. The woman then led the man to a nearby glen where he discovered a woman's body; the ghost returned no more.

Date / Time: Prior to a death in the Langford family
Further Comments: The wife of a former Langford man, this woman now only appears before a death in the family.

Lady in White

Location: Kilkenny (County Kilkenny) - Kilkenny Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This female form is said to occasionally appear on a staircase and in the garden. A legend says this ghost (or perhaps others) ensure that no guest will have a restful night within the castle.
