Ghostly Women in White and White Women

The Ayloffs

Location: Rainham (Essex) - Bretons Manor

Further Comments: A few ghosts are reported to haunt this manor. Roman soldiers have been seen walking through walls in the basement, and a lady in white has been seen on the lower half of the stairs. Another lady seen on the stairs is thought to be Martha Ayloff, while Anne Ayloff, wearing a lavender dress, haunts the room adjacent to room 7.

White Lady

Location: Randalstown (County Antrim) - Shane's Castle (aka Shanes Castle)
Type: Curse
Date / Time: 1966 (lady), but banshee unknown
Further Comments: This pallid female wraith cursed the family with everlasting sorrow and misfortune. She is said to be quite tall and slender, with blue eyes and blonde hair. The figure was last seen in 1966, where the entity was said to be on her knees, crying, bathed in bluish-white light. A banshee has also been heard wailing at the castle; one man who heard the entity as he left the site died before his journey ended.

White Lady of Kilcosgriff

Location: Rathkeale (County Limerick) - Abbey
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: 1914
Further Comments: The phantom white lady from Kilcosgriff Castle is said to have come to this building when a Major Langford died here. She was seen by a nurse treating the Major.

Lady in White

Location: Rayleigh (Essex) - Unknown toy shop
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1974
Further Comments: This ghostly woman in white could be heard moving things around the shop and was said to have touched the back of the neck of one witness. It is thought that the woman died in a house fire.

Woman in White

Location: Reagill (Cumbria) - Country lanes in the area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early twentieth century
Further Comments: It is not clear if the woman in white, a large black hound and a black hog which once haunted this area were all the same entity. The phantom (or phantoms) would all suddenly grow once seen, before pursuing any witness.

Young Boy

Location: Renfrew (Renfrewshire) - Victory Baths
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: The swimming baths are reputedly to be haunted by two phantoms. One is a young boy who diving into the pool while wearing a First World War German helmet his father had brought back from the trenches. The lad landed badly and snapped his neck. The second ghost is that of a woman dressed in white.

White Lady

Location: Rhiwsaeson (South Glamorgan) - Unknown road in the area

Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A woman in white who haunted the area was said to have tried to locate a newborn baby, the kiss of which would release her from her fate.

White Woman

Location: Rhosili (West Glamorgan) - Paviland Cave, between village and Port Eynon

Further Comments: This cave is haunted by a greedy woman who entered it looking for hidden treasure - a sudden storm blew up, trapping and drowning her.

White Woman

Location: Rhyl (Clwyd) - Start of the Dyserth Road bends

Further Comments: The white figure of a lady was seen standing behind a wall, leaning over the top.

White Woman

Location: Risca (Gwent) - Miner's graves near campsite in nearby forest

Further Comments: This area is home to a phantom woman in white and a strange shadowy figure, speculated by some to be a former miner.

White Woman & Coach

Location: Romford (Essex) - The Manor, Harold Hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: It is said that a phantom white woman haunts this area, sometimes seen climbing into a ghostly horse-drawn coach which then drives off.

Pale Lady

Location: Rowarth (Derbyshire) - Long Lee Farm
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This phantom woman in white who once frequently walked through walls and closed doors may be connected to the 'Boggart Room', where an infant's coffin was stored to avoid paying Shroud Tax.

Arbella Stuart

Location: Rufford (Nottinghamshire) - Rufford Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Photograph in media during December 2013
Further Comments: Some believe the phantom white lady said to haunt the abbey is the ghost of Arbella Stuart, although her connection to the site is a little unclear. A photograph hit the press in 2013 showing a 'white misty figure', although the image is open to interpretation.

Dancing Woman

Location: Ryde (Isle of Wight) - Royal Victoria Yacht Club
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Wearing a white gown, a phantom woman is said to dance alone in the ballroom. Other entities reputed to haunt the side include another woman who is fond of men, a woman in a black dress spotted on the staircase, a couple of children, three drinkers at the bar, and finally the friendly entity known only as Albert.

Restless Dead

Location: Saddell (Argyll and Bute) - Abbey and castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: It is said that a former laird removed the headstones from nearby churchyards to use as construction material for his castle - hence, much of the area is haunted by those disturbed. Particularly noted are the shades of a monk and that of a white lady.

White Lady

Location: Salford (Greater Manchester) - Ordsall Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: Some people believe that this phantom figure is Margaret Radclyffe, Queen Elizabeth's favourite Maid of Honour. She died of a broken heart in 1559 shortly after the death of her brother.

Phantom Footfalls

Location: Salisbury (Wiltshire) - Haunch of Venison public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Random days between 11.30 & midnight (footfalls), white lady unknown
Further Comments: The footfalls may belong to the owner of a severed hand which was discovered behind a secret panel within the pub. This ghost is also held responsible for moving dirty glasses in the bar. The hand was stolen from the pub in March 2004. Another phantom, that of a white lady, is said to appear at windows.

John Wilson

Location: Sanquhar (Dumfries and Galloway) - Sanquhar Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Wilson was murdered just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and his ghost still protests. A blonde-haired lady dressed in white also haunts the castle - she was murdered in the late sixteenth century, though her body not discovered for almost three hundred years.

Highwayman's Girlfriend

Location: Scole (Norfolk) - The Scole Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This woman was murdered by a jealous partner after he discovered that she was having an affair with a highwayman; the ghostly lady in white now walks the staircase and the first floor.

White Lady

Location: SE18 (Greater London) - Shooter's Hill, Blackheath
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This ghost is believed to be that of a woman who died of head trauma - a skull found in the 1830s near the site possessed a large hole caused by a blunt object. Shooter's Hill also made the news in 1963, as it was combed by police and soldiers looking for a puma-like creature that had been seen by members of the public.

Woman in White

Location: Seaton (Leicestershire) - B672 Road, under the Seaton Viaduct bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: While travelling home, a driver spotted a woman in white clothing, with a pale face, standing by a gate by one of the bridge arches. Finding it strange for someone to be there, the driver slowed down to take a closer look. The figure was completely motionless. The driver passed her, and looking into the rear view mirror, realised the figure had vanished.

White Lady

Location: Sheffield (South Yorkshire) - Beauchief Abbey and Hall

Further Comments: This traditional white figure supposedly haunts the grounds of both the hall and the abbey. The latter location is also the home to a spectral monk.

White Woman

Location: Sheffield (South Yorkshire) - Bowshaw House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Wearing a flowing dress, this pale spirit has occasionally been reported.

White Lady

Location: Sheffield (South Yorkshire) - Highcliffe Road, Ecclesall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Little is known about this phantom woman, other than an interesting point to note is that the road was once called Dead Man's Lane.

Governess

Location: Sheffield (South Yorkshire) - Mosborough Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Now returning to the hall in the form of a white lady, the governess had her throat slit by the hall's Squire after she threatened to tell his wife of their affair. The sounds of their final argument can also be heard drifting around the hall at night. A man staying here also reported a phantom hound which awoke him at night.
