Old Coker

Location: Hill Deverill - Gun's Church (or Gunschurch) barrow

Further Comments: Even though he died in 1730, Henry Coker is said to still ride his horse, follow his hounds, rattle his chains and blow his hunting horn in the area.

Horse Drawn Coach

Location: Hindon - Junction of the A303 and the A350
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This ghoulish coach is drawn by a team of four grey spectral horses.

Red Lady

Location: Hinton - Hinton Manor
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This ghostly woman in red is said to play the harpsichord in the music room and smile at anyone who observes her.

Bob

Location: Hodson - Road between Hodson and Chiseldon
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: An entity with 'no particular shape', the ghost is said to bob up and down as it moves before vanishing.


The ghost pig of Horton.

Large Pig

Location: Horton - Pig Lane

Further Comments: A large phantom hog is said to haunt this country lane, sometimes accompanied by a rolling barrel.

Grey Man

Location: Hullavington - Road near Burton Hill House School
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A driver reported narrowly missing a man in grey clothing who stood in the middle of the road - the figure raised its arm and vanished.

Figure in White

Location: Imber - Area around New Zealand Farm
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1880
Further Comments: A couple returning to their farm became lost in fog, during which time a silent figure in white passed by them.

Horseman

Location: Kilmington - Bull Lane region
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A grisly headless horseman rides around this area of the village.

Lord Stourton

Location: Kilmington - Churchyard
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Lord Stourton and his gang of murderous friends still lurk in the churchyard - Stourton was executed for killing his father's servant. The inside of the church is haunted by the murdered man.

Coffin

Location: Kingston Deverill - Barrow

Further Comments: A golden coffin is reputed to be buried under this barrow.

Nun

Location: Kington St Michael - Priory of St Mary
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 01:30h (reoccurring)
Further Comments: This phantom appears at the same time every morning and takes a little walk.

Hound

Location: Knighton Down - Barrow in the area
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A phantom hound is said to lurk around a long barrow in this area.

Roseamond

Location: Lacock - Lacock Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This girl, said to be quite beautiful, haunts the abbey grounds. Some believe her to have been murdered by Queen Eleanor.


A ghostly figure appears on the backseat.

Retriever

Location: Lacock - Road (running through village)
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Only appears at midnight
Further Comments: This black hound is said to resemble a retriever. The creature is said to 'accompany' anyone who walks through the area. Another phantom (or perhaps the same entity in different form) is that of a figure who materialises in the back seat of cars passing through the village, visible only in the rear view mirror.

Old Lady

Location: Lacock - Sign of the Angel public house

Further Comments: This OAP has been observed sitting patiently at a table.

Reginald de Cobham

Location: Langley Burrell - Village centre and/or Steinbrook Hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Murdered by the mob for his religious beliefs, de Cobham is still seen, battered and bleeding from his injuries. Some say he appears on the top of a nearby hill, where he was slowly roasted alive by the vengeful crowd.

Vanishing Figure

Location: Lansdown - Racecourse
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A worker on the site has twice encountered a figure which has been mistaken as a living person until it suddenly vanishes.

Man in the Wardrobe

Location: Larkhill - Married quarter in garrison
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 2003-2005
Further Comments: A family living here experienced bangs, footsteps, and cold spots. The family dog would run around and bark at thin air. The children reported seeing a man who hid in the wardrobe and would instruct them to do things, such as hide the food in the kitchen. When the activity became too much to bear, the family moved away.

Flying Loaf

Location: Laverstock - Skies over the village
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: Several witnesses reported seeing a UFO hovering in the sky, resembling a glowing loaf of bread.

Face at the Window

Location: Limpley Stoke - Road through the village
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: At least one motorist has reported seeing a ghostly face at their windscreen at a bend along this road.

Skipping Figure

Location: Little Wishford - A36, near some trees, heading towards Knock
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2019?
Further Comments: Driving to Somerset, a witness spotted what looked like a person, caught in headlights ahead, crossing the road. It moved like a woman and it half skipped towards the side of the road. As a vehicle in the opposite lane passed through it, the figure disappeared, and as the witness's own car reached the spot, nothing could be seen.

Falling Branches

Location: Littlecote - Elm tree near the Manor House - current state unknown
Type: Curse
Date / Time: Marks a death in the Popham family
Further Comments: When a branch falls from a certain old elm tree near the manor house, a member of the Popham family (former owners of the house) is said to die. If the entire tree falls, a huge tragic event is believed to befall Littlecote.

Mother & Child

Location: Littlecote - Littlecote House Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A woman in pink has been seen walking the corridors, holding her newborn baby. The child was murdered by its father ('Wild' Will Darrell), seconds after birth, when he threw it into a nearby fireplace. The screaming that has also been reported belongs to the mother, horrified at Darrell's actions. Darrell's fate is documented elsewhere in this database. The building claims more than twenty ghosts in total, including Cromwellian troops and a woman in blue who walked through a rope.

Wild Will Darrell

Location: Littlecote - Littlecote Park, Darrell's Stile
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Shortly after murdering his newborn child, Darrell's body was found in the park with a broken neck, after being thrown from his horse (locals blamed the murdered child's ghost for making the creature bolt). Darrell now haunts the spot, eternally paying for his crime. The park is also the reputed home to a phantom legion of Roman soldiers.


Perhaps not the most practical piece of gardening equipment.

Wheelbarrow

Location: Littleton Drew - Lugbury long barrow
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A golden wheelbarrow is said to be concealed in this area.
