Pellymounter Polt

Location: Swindon - Private house along Westbury Road
Type: Poltergeist

Further Comments: The Pellymounter family who lived here reported several poltergeist-like events, including personal items being moved around, doors which opened and closed by themselves, a radio which turned itself on and off, and whisperings. An exorcism was finally performed on the site which was broadcast by the BBC.

Edna Cabbe

Location: Swindon - Private house, Freshbrook

Further Comments: The name Edna was given to the spirit which visited this house; the ghost appeared to enjoy throwing toys around and manifesting over a fireplace.

Roman

Location: Swindon - Private residence, Covingham
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: While sleeping in the lounge, a guest in this house was awoken by whimpering from the family dog. They watched as a Roman soldier walked from one end of the room to the other. The witness screamed and ran upstairs to their friend's room, where they were told it was a ghost and it would not cause any harm.

Dragging

Location: Swindon - Private residence, Greenmeadow area

Further Comments: Banging and the sounds of dragging would be heard coming from empty parts of this property. On one occasion, a figure was spotted running up the stairs, although no one was found when the area was searched.

Black Cat

Location: Swindon - Private residence, Liden

Date / Time: 1986-1989
Further Comments: A ghostly black cat was spotted by the occupants of this property.

Electrical Issues

Location: Swindon - Private residence, Middleleaze area
Type: Poltergeist

Further Comments: Although only renting the property for six months, a family reported a high number of events which would only occur in the living room, including a TV which would stitch itself off, a telephone answering machine which played itself, dimming lights, a smoke alarm which would sound even when the power was disconnected, and the smell of a man's aftershave.

Writhing Shape

Location: Swindon - Private residence, Old Town

Date / Time: 1960s/1970s
Further Comments: While living in this property, one witness watched a black, opaque shape writhing in the corner of their room. The shape remained for several minutes, the witness too scared to move, until it vanished. After another member of the household felt something trying to strangle them, they decided to move. Even on the day of leaving, a dark cloud followed one occupant around, and a visitor helping with the move fled the site terrified.

Young Lad

Location: Swindon - Private residence, Old Town

Further Comments: A child aged around ten years old dressed in an Edwardian school uniform was spotted by several people walking around this property.

Shadowy Man

Location: Swindon - Private residence, Penhill Drive
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1964-1966
Further Comments: After occupants moved away having endured several elements of a classic haunting (including ornaments moving unaided, rattling door handles, and a shadowy male figure), the council received several requests from people wanting to move in.

Black Dog

Location: Swindon - Road between Moredon and Haydon Wick

Further Comments: The road between these two locations was once believed to be the haunt of a shuck.

Car

Location: Swindon - Road between Swindon and Huntingford
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: There are several reports of a car crossing the road somewhere between these two towns, though at the point at which it crosses there is barbed wire fencing along each side.

Footsteps

Location: Swindon - Stratton Scout hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Two scout leaders were said to have heard footsteps walking through the empty hall.

Sounds of Violence

Location: Swindon - The Planks, Old Town (former auction rooms)
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The sounds of crashing and smashing were heard on the return of a driver late at night - when the doors were opened, there was no visible damage. As the doors were closed, the violent noises resumed, so the police were called. Although a face was seen in an upper window, on searching the building no one could be found.

Gardener

Location: Swindon - Toot Hill Farm House

Further Comments: The garden of this farmhouse, close to the site of an old healing well, is said to be haunted by gardener who continues to look after the grounds.

Running Figures

Location: Swindon - Wyvern Theatre

Further Comments: Shadowy figures have been reported running in the building, and footsteps heard in areas that should be empty.

Drummer

Location: Tedworth (now North Tidworth) - Tedworth House, now Zouch Manor
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1661-1662
Further Comments: One of the first hauntings in the UK to be documented (although witchcraft was blamed), the phantom drummer of Tedworth House briefly caused havoc; banging at all hours of the day and night, bedclothes being torn off, and the children were thrown out of bed.

Funeral Procession

Location: The Wansdyke - Various places along the post Roman dyke
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A wooden wagon bearing a coffin, pulled by jet black horses, has been spotted along this old dyke. The spectacle vanishes if witnesses become too close.

Figure in a Top Hat

Location: Tilshead - St Thomas a Becket Church
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 26 March 2012, morning
Further Comments: A ten year old girl became upset and left this church after she spotted a semi-transparent figure with grey hair and a top hat sitting in the box pews. When she started to turn back inside the church, she saw the figure once again, sitting closer to the door.

Fair Nell

Location: Tisbury - Medieval Place Farm
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A former nun once based on this site, Nell was condemned to walk the earth for the rest of time after falling in love with a local man.

Molly Peart

Location: Tisbury - Pyt House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Molly's body lies in the cellar of this building. The last time the corpse was moved out of the house, loud banging could be heard at night and misfortunes befell family members until the body was replaced.

Molly

Location: Tisbury - Tisbury Bridge (aka Molly's Bridge)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twenty-first century
Further Comments: A local legend says that Molly Peart was hanged from this bridge (she was actually hanged in Oxfordshire) and that her ghost haunts the site. The legend also says a child was hanged at the site. One witness reported shadowy figures passing the window on their parked car while close by and something swinging from the bridge.

Frog Fall

Location: Trowbridge - Municipal swimming pool
Type: Other
Date / Time: 16 June 1939, around 16:30h
Further Comments: During a heavy shower of rain, the superintendent and several children at the pool watched hundreds of small frogs falling upon the path around the pool.

Interrupted Lovers

Location: Trowbridge - The original Wyke House (not the current house built in 1864)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early nineteenth century?
Further Comments: While having an affair with one of his servants, John Faltham encountered a ghost which caused great concern to himself and the rest of the house. The ghost was eventually banished into a large chest by a team of twelve clergymen.

Backstabbing

Location: Unnamed village within 10 miles of Swindon - The Beeches
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Elliot O'Donnell, in The Midnight Hearse claims this cottage as being haunted by the sounds of a woman crying 'Take it out, for God's sake take it out" before one final scream fills the air. The woman was stabbed at the front door by an unknown assailant and managed to stagger back inside the cottage before dying. O'Donnell does not name the village; the only clue he gives is that it is along the Great West Road.

Coach

Location: Upavon - Bridge

Further Comments: Heard but not seen, a phantom coach occasionally crosses the bridge.
