Norfolk Ghosts, Folklore and Forteana

Small Bearded Monk

Location: Morley St Botolph - Morley Old Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1960s onwards
Further Comments: Famed for a television appearance during the Sixties, Morley's ethereal monk was seen by two dozen people on an ITV programme. The site is also reputed to be haunted by a woman.

Lord Protector

Location: Morningthorpe - Boyland Hall (demolished in 1947)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre-1947
Further Comments: A phantom man observed on the staircase of the hall was said to be Cromwell, who once had an affair with a former occupier.

Highwayman

Location: Moulton St Mary - Callow (or Caller) Pit
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A phantom highwayman would ride around this pit before heading towards Callow Spong (where he would vanish). The pit itself was said to be the home of the Devil, who dragged one man down into its waters after he tried to fish out a chest of coins.

Shaggy Dog

Location: Mulbarton - East Carleton Road
Type: Cryptozoology

Further Comments: An extremely large shaggy grey coloured dog darted out ahead of this witness travelling to work on a clear morning. The creature, around 1.8 metres in length, had short, pointed ears, and oversized snout and feet.

Lavina

Location: Mulbarton - World's End public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Lavina, a former barmaid, was said to have been murdered after refusing his advances. Even though the crime happened over two hundred years ago, the room where the murder occurred remains sealed.

The Long Coastguardsman

Location: Mundesley - Coast of Mundesley
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Weather Dependent: Stormy nights
Further Comments: His mortal coil long since gone, the coastguard is heard shouting as the wind and the rain descend.

Large Creature with Five Humps

Location: Mundesley - Off coast
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: August 1936
Further Comments: While walking along the beach, a couple watched the creature move at fantastic speed through the water.

Incorporeal Dog

Location: Neatishead - Unnamed road in the area
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Pre-1872
Further Comments: While walking home, a man named Finch spotted what he thought was a fellow villager's dog in the road. The dog snarled at Finch, so he tried to kick it away. His foot passed straight through the creature.

Dark Figure

Location: New Buckenham - Sandy Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A dark, shadowy male ghost is said to only appear at night.

Dorothy Walpole

Location: New Houghton - Houghton Hall, State Bedroom
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Dressed in brown, the sister of Sir Robert Walpole haunts the building. It is said that the Hall was her favourite place while she lived, so she has found it hard to leave in death.

Banging

Location: Norfolk - Private residence near Eaton Park
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Circa late 2000/early 2001
Further Comments: Neighbours heard banging in the house which lasted throughout the evening but later found out the property had been empty.

Mrs Carpenter Bursts into Flame

Location: Norfolk Broads - Norfolk Broads
Type: SHC
Date / Time: 29 (or 30) July 1938 (or 1937)
Further Comments: While enjoying a boating holiday, Mrs Carpenter burst into flame and was reduced to a charred corpse.

Field of Geese and Scabbie

Location: North Creake - First Field, North Creake Farm
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The field is reportedly haunted by a flock of geese - seen feeding on the field, they vanish when approached. A local named Scabbie once took a shortcut across this field and was found dead several hours later. His ghost is now rumoured to haunt the field also.

Cavalier

Location: North Lopham - Private residence, The Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1972, between 03:00h - 04:00h
Further Comments: Seen in the bedroom, this Cavalier was perfectly detailed, other than the face being a blur.

Sea Monster

Location: North Norfolk Coast - Sea
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1930
Further Comments: This saltwater creature was observed by the steward on a small boat.

Roar of Engines

Location: North Pickenham - Hangar at Second World War Airfield
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1959
Further Comments: The sound of old aircraft engines warming up has been reported coming from a hangar on this site, even though the building in question is empty.

Black Fog

Location: North Walsham - Cromer road
Type: Other
Date / Time: November 2001
Further Comments: Two people heading towards Cromer drove into a pitch-black fog. The driver said he had no control over his car and the vehicle seemed to move forwards and slide left by itself. The driver managed to stop after a few seconds; the fog had vanished and the car was on a different road, parallel to the one it was on. No time had passed, both people and their car were fine, and the rest of the journey proceeded without incident.

Road Crossing Cat

Location: North Walsham - Northeast of village, close to Bacton Woods / Verona woods
Type: ABC
Date / Time: June 2010
Further Comments: Four witnesses slowly driving in this area spotted a large cat walking from a wheat field, down a bank and across the road. When the witnesses stopped their vehicle, the cat ran up the opposite bank and into Verona woods.

Music

Location: Northrepps - Hungry Hill
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 21 July 2010, August 2010, and March 2025
Further Comments: Two people driving along this lane in 2010 stopped to take a photograph. They both heard 1960s music coming from what sounded like a radio, although there was nothing or nobody from which the sound could have emerged. The music suddenly ceased. A month later, a group of three people walking from the village also reported hearing the music. In 2025, a witness heard music while walking in the area. When the witness stopped moving, the music ceased and only started again when the witness began to walk off.

Something Down There

Location: Northrepps - Shrieking Pit, along a lane off Hungry Hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 24 February (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Some say that the entity that appears in the pit is the spirit of a woman who took her life, while others believe it is something much darker that lures the unwary to their deaths.

Orange Lights

Location: Northrepps - Sky above North Walsham Road
Type: UFO
Date / Time: July 2015
Further Comments: A witness reported watching dozens of bright orange lights high up in the air. The lights were visible for several minutes before fading out and were compared to missile countermeasures used by military aircraft.

Ringing

Location: Northwold - Church
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 14 November 1956
Further Comments: A policeman cycling through the village was surprised to hear the church bell ringing. The bell rang a total of twenty five times and stopped as the officer approached the church. The door was locked, and there was no one inside, but the bell rope was gently swinging.


19 Magdalen Street, Norwich.

Victorian Female Murder Victim

Location: Norwich - 19 Magdalen Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: When this location was home to a charity shop, staff were subjected to the sounds of footsteps in empty parts of the building, cold spots, and drafts. A shadowy figure was also reported to lurk on the staircase. The psychical research team BSIG spent a night on the site; they documented EVP and witnessed a previously locked door swing open. It was speculated that the haunting was caused by a Victorian woman murdered near the site. More recently, the EDP's Weird Norfolk team reported an exorcism had been performed in the shop in the 1980 and that, perhaps other than one recent fleeting encounter, the haunting has all but ceased.

Sam the Lord Sheffield

Location: Norwich - Adam and Eve public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1549 onwards
Further Comments: Dying at the inn in 1549, Lord Sheffield (now nicknamed Sam) now makes the odd appearance in the building. Sometimes staff report the feeling of someone running fingers through their hair, even though no one else is nearby. In 2006 one man reported seeing a ghostly hand holding a head while sitting in the pub's car park.


Augustine Steward House, Norwich.

Lady in Grey

Location: Norwich - Augustine Steward House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century?
Further Comments: When the plague killed the occupants of this building, the house was boarded up for several weeks. Unfortunately, a girl in the house had survived; unable to escape, she starved to death. Her grey ghost haunts both the Augustine Steward House and the Tombland alleyway.
