Flying Glasses

Further Comments: Customers have reported seeing a figure standing by a wine cabinet, while items have thrown themselves off shelves and an unseen hand has poured glasses of wine in the kitchen.

Witch's Leg

Location: East Somerton - Church of St Mary (ruins) and tree known as the Witch's Finger

Further Comments: Perhaps a recently created piece of folklore, one story says that a witch with a wooden leg was buried alive in the church; from the leg grew a tree and the church fell to ruins soon after.

Large Wormlike Creature

Location: Eccles-on-Sea - Coastline off Eccles
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 05 August 1936, evening
Further Comments: Observed by the Mayor, a MP and four other people, a creature twelve metres long moved like a worm on the surface of the water. One witness estimated the speed to be up to ninety miles per hour.

Headless Horseman

Location: Elsing - Belaugh Wall, between Elsing and Bawdswell

Further Comments: This decapitated phantom on his steed is said to ride along the wall before leaping over the stonework on the stroke of midnight.

Poltergeist

Location: Emneth - Lonely Cottage
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1960s
Further Comments: For a period of several years, the building was plagued by the standard poltergeist activities; doors and windows opened, household appliances were mysteriously turned on, and ornaments moved and were often found broken.

White Lady

Location: Fakenham - 4 Green Lane
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1975
Further Comments: A family were terrified by poltergeist activity, which included the entity tightening a crucifix necklace around someone's neck. Unusually, a phantom woman in white was also seen on the site by several people, including a neighbour.

Standing Man

Location: Fakenham - A1067, Docking/Hunstanton junction

Further Comments: A ghostly figure has been seen standing on the roundabout here at least twice.

Unlit Bicycle

Location: Fakenham - A148 Bale Crossroads
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A driver was forced to brake sharply as a cyclist pulled out in front of their car. As the driver started to drive again, they realised the cyclist had vanished.

Book Loving Gentleman

Location: Felbrigg - Mannington Hall, Library
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: 11 October 1879, and 1912
Further Comments: Witness Dr Augustus Jessop claimed to have spent a night in 1879 researching in the library, sharing his work area with a red haired ghost. Possibly unconnected, an exorcism was performed on the site in 1912 to rid the building of a poltergeist - part of the upper floor was bricked up after the procedure.

Dowser

Location: Feltwell - Feltwell Anchor Fen, near Little Ouse

Further Comments: A sadist in life, Dowser lived in the fen in the mid-nineteenth century. Reported to have beaten his wife, and tying her to various farming appliances, he finally killed himself.

Vanishing Man

Location: Foulden - Thetford Forest

Further Comments: A holidaymaker spoke to an older man wearing smart trousers and shirt. The older man asked if the visitor was local, then excused himself before vanishing.

Devil & Shuck

Location: Foxley - Near a waterway & hill?
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: 1602
Further Comments: Believed to have occurred in 1602, a miller was harassed by the Devil. The Fallen Angel tried to talk to the miller, who refused to stop working. The Devil gave up, turning into a large black dog before running away.

Long Necked Entities

Location: Fritton - Fritton Woods

Further Comments: Two strange, dark human-like creatures startled a couple as they sat in their car at the woods. The witnesses said the entities were quite tall and had elongated necks and long hands. When the car was started and the headlights turned on, the creatures vanished behind a tree.

Footsteps

Location: Fritton - Isolated house (exact location unknown)

Further Comments: After tolerating several days of tapping and disembodied footsteps, a woman living in this property finally fled when invisible hands tried to pull her out of bed. Two people volunteered to stay in the house overnight to banish the ghost; it is not clear if they were successful.

Golden Plough

Further Comments: This mound was once thought to contain treasure in the form of a golden plough.

Smell of Sulphur

Location: Fulmodeston - Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: August 2005
Further Comments: Several witnesses at this ruined church encountered a strange white mist and the stench of sulphur. A pet dog refused to go near the tower, and as the party went to leave, voices were heard and a figure seen moving around on top of the tower, even though the flooring had long since crumbled away.

Labrador

Location: Garboldisham - Fox Inn

Further Comments: The black Labrador of a former landlord is reputed to haunt the site.

Boudicca's Graves

Location: Garboldisham - Soldier's Hill (barrows) on the heath
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: As it is widely thought that Boudicca resided in this area of Norfolk, these barrows are contenders as the final resting place of the warrior queen.

Susan and Grumpy

Location: Geldeston - Lock bridge and the old Lock House (now an inn), next to the river Waveney
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1989, Summer, 02:30h
Further Comments: Camping outside the pub, a witness awoke needing to visit the bathroom. While looking for a suitable location, he watched an old lady appear on the lock footbridge, holding a candle in an old jam jar, closely followed by a large goose. The duo disappeared next to the closed doors of the inn. The following morning, the witness asked the landlord about the sighting and was told that the old woman he had described was Susan, who had died a few years previous, and her pet goose named 'Grumpy'.

Running Dog

Location: Geldeston - Lover's Lane, leading to the churchyard

Further Comments: The small lane leading to the local churchyard is reputedly home to a phantom hound - the creature has been spotted running along the lane. It is thought that the location that the hound appears will soon be the site of a crime. A ghostly donkey seen here may be the same entity. The same area is also haunted by a haunted coach as it travels towards Bungay Castle.

Phantom Coach

Location: Geldeston - Road to Bungay from Geldeston

Further Comments: A coach drawn by four horses and driven by a headless coachman is supposed to travel from Bungay to Geldeston before returning to its departure point.

Wicked Parson

Location: Gillingham - Dogs Lane and All Saints church
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: 1927
Further Comments: Last seen sitting on a verge along Dogs Lane with glowing eyes, this phantom hound is thought to be a holy man with less than holy tendencies. The entity was also reported outside the church in 1913.

Jangling Highwayman

Location: Gillingham - Road past the War Memorial

Further Comments: The sound of chains that can be heard crossing the road as the church bells ring are attributed to a phantom highwayman. He prowled on people using the road between Beccles and Great Yarmouth, and when caught the man was chained and hanged.

Rustling

Location: Gillingham - Winston Hall

Further Comments: The phantom sounds heard at the hall include a rustling silk dress that passes along the corridors, ghostly footsteps, and a voice that calls out 'are you there?'.

Smugglers

Location: Gillingham - Wyndale Farm

Further Comments: Possibly connected to the rumoured secret tunnel that extends from the farmhouse to the river, the farm is thought to be haunted by the phantoms of smugglers.
