Mount of Frogs

Further Comments: Ider the Arthurian knight killed three giants on this hill, known at the time as the Mount of Frogs.

Horse

Location: East Chinnock - Main road in the village
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Midnight
Further Comments: The sounds of a horse have been heard as it gallops down the street. Some believe it carries two eloping lovers from the rectory.

Ladder

Location: East Chinnock - Rectory
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1927
Further Comments: Two children heard a ladder banging against their playroom and of someone ascending. They rushed to find their father, who investigated and found nothing. The father later claimed to have seen the ghost of a young blonde girl. A local story told of a woman who eloped from the house with her lover, using a ladder to avoid her disapproving father.

Taxi Service

Location: East Coker - Coker Court

Further Comments: A phantom horse and carriage arrive in the courtyard, picking up an unidentifiable person before once again vanishing to the ether.

Footsteps

Location: East Harptree - Coley House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century?
Further Comments: An elderly man who once lived at the house was able to see the phantom that haunted it, though his daughter would only hear the entity walking around the site. When the old man died, the haunting ceased.

Grey Lady

Location: East Vicarage - Unnamed road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: October, late nineteenth century?
Further Comments: Driving their mule drawn cart on a cold October morning, two women stopped along the road when a strange woman crossed the road ahead of them. Despite the freezing temperature, the lady wore a pink summer dress with a white lace headscarf. The two women in the cart then realised that the pedestrian was floating around thirty centimetres from the ground, and that the figure had skin and eyes like grey dust. One of the women fainted, and their mule bolted, not stopping until two miles separated it from the entity.

Golden Coffin

Location: Evercreech - Barrow on Small Down

Further Comments: This is another location where a golden coffin is reputed to be buried.

Fairy Fort

Location: Exford - Cow Castle
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: This Iron Age Hillfort was constructed by fairies to protect themselves from earth spirits.

Lady Hungerford

Location: Farleigh Hungerford - Castle ruins, chapel area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This figure reportedly married her first husband for his money - she killed him soon after their wedding. She was soon caught, found guilty of murder, and hanged.

Fire Starter

Location: Farmborough - Private residence, north of village
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1963 - 1964
Further Comments: After initially suffering a continuously leaking water tank (blamed on a poltergeist), this home became the site of several spontaneous fires that damaged curtains, a tablecloth, and a kettle which had been switched off at the plug.

Old Sailors

Location: Flat Holm - Ruins of infirmary
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The infirmary was home to sailors with cholera, the bodies being burnt on site. Their moans are still heard.

Location: Frome - Beckingham Castle

Further Comments: An advert selling this property on the open market used the fact it was haunted as a selling point.

Lake Lady

Location: Frome - Orchardleigh, Spring Gardens
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: It is unsure whether this local lass is a lost spirit or a member of the fairy family.

Victorian Girl

Location: Frome - Private residence
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late 2010s
Further Comments: This home was reported haunted by the occupant who had spotted a girl aged around eight years old dressed in Victorian era clothing. The ghost had a passing resemblance to the witness's daughter, and was mistaken on one occasion for her, until the witness realised the figure had vanished from the room it had been seen to enter.

Stalking Box

Location: Frome - Private residence (no longer standing), Oakfield Road
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 22 February 1963
Further Comments: Two men working on the demolition of a row of cottages walked through an old kitchen and had a piece of crockery smash on the wall behind them. Initially suspecting another workman of playing a joke, the men changed their minds as a wooden box slide across the floor, as if following them, and another piece of crockery smashed behind them. The men escaped by jumping through the kitchen window.

Military Cyclist

Location: Frome - Road outside the Morton Guest House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 22 July 1990
Further Comments: A photograph taken here could show either a phantom motorcyclist or a double exposure of the photographer himself. Even though the latter is much more likely, the site was the location of a fatal motorbike accident in 1940.

Vanishing Vehicle

Location: Gare Hill - Unnamed road between Gare Hill Road and Witham Friary
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: March 2023
Further Comments: Driving a van to Witham Friary down a single track lane, a driver and colleague spotted headlights coming towards them down the hill. They pulled into the passing place at the bottom however the headlights never arrived. There was nowhere for the car to have gone.

Holy Grail

Location: Glastonbury - Chalice Well
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Well still present
Further Comments: After the death of Jesus, Joseph of Arimathea brought the Grail to England and buried it so the waters that feed the well wash over the object.

Fairy King

Location: Glastonbury - Glastonbury Tor
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: UFO 1980s, others unknown
Further Comments: Local legend has it that St Collen visited the head of the fairy royal family on this hill. A woman, named by some to be Queen Guinevere, is also said to manifest over the Tor, and possesses golden hair that illuminates the area. During the 1980s, a woman ascending the tor spotted what she thought was the full moon behind trees, only to realise that the globe was moving towards her - she fled.

Returned Sword

Location: Glastonbury - Pomparles Bridge, River Brue
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: It is suggested that this location is where Sir Bedivere returned Excalibur to the Lady in the Lake.

Friar Francis

Location: Glastonbury - Private residence, Magdalene Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1995-2001
Further Comments: A former resident reported sharing the community with a friendly entity named Friar Francis, thought to have nursed lepers during his life. He would drift in and out of the witness's home and had a very comforting presence.

Lovesick Monk

Location: Glastonbury - The George and Pilgrim Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A monk has been reported walking down the corridors of the building, sometimes followed by a well-dressed female figure. Allegedly lovers who never touched, their sexual tension has bound them to earth... Another hotel 'guest' is a man seen wearing a blue sports jacket, who vanishes if approached.

First Church in Britain

Location: Glastonbury - Wirrall Hill (sometimes known as Wearyall Hill) and abbey
Type: Legend
Date / Time: AD63 (ish)
Further Comments: The abbey, of which only the ruins remain, was built on top of the first Christian church in the UK. A holy well located here once cured the sick. Monks based here in the twelfth century claimed to have discovered the bones of King Arthur on the site, though little evidence exists to back this claim up.

Tall Woman

Location: Hallatrow - Wells Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 16 March 2023, 20:00h
Further Comments: A driver spotted a tall woman wearing a long white Victorian-era gown, and a flower crown. The figure had her hands up to her face, as if laughing, and skipped along by herself. The driver and occupant turned around a few seconds later to have another look, but the figure had vanished.

Wild Man

Location: Hangley Cleave - Barrow
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: One man reportedly saw a large hairy creature with pale eyes, which resembled a man. Other sightings have come from a nearby quarry. One theory is that these creatures are the ghosts of Neanderthals.
