Shropshire Ghosts, Folklore and Forteana

Shaker

Location: Northwood - Inn (name not given)
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Circa nineteenth century?
Further Comments: The ghost (considered a goblin at the time) which was said to haunt the property rattled items stored in a cupboard and caused the table to shake, resulting in any items placed upon it to move about. The entity was said to have been laid in the cellar.

Raining Coal

Location: Northwood - Unknown house in Northwood Green
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: December 1810
Further Comments: Coal, stones, and pieces of brick dropped through ceilings and appeared through the cellar floor. A crowd of fifty people arrived to watch the apports, but whether they witnessed the psychical phenomena is unknown.

Rush of Wind

Location: Norton in Hales - Brand Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early 1950s
Further Comments: Two occupants felt a rush of wind that blew open an internal door. It took both people to close it against the resistance. They would later be informed the house was haunted by a burst of wind which would cause problems. A bedroom door had previously been sealed to present another ghost from using it, although stories varied to whether the entity was a black male figure or pale woman.

Raining Frogs

Location: Oswestry - General area
Type: Other
Date / Time: Summer 1912
Further Comments: During a heavy rainfall, dozens of frogs fell from the sky. They had vanished within two hours after the rains had stopped.

Spring

Location: Oswestry - King Oswald's Well
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: This spring was created when the severed arm of King Oswald of Northumberland hit the ground, dropped by an eagle who had taken it from a battlefield. The nearby hillfort was once thought to have belonged to Guinevere's father, though this is now discounted.

Black Cat

Location: Poynton Green - Field in the village
Type: Other
Date / Time: 22 October, every ten years since 1941 (next in 2021) (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Two Czech pilots died here on 22 October 1941, crashing in the field as they ran out of fuel. A local farmer rushed to the field trying to save them but was beaten back by the flames. He did, however, see a black cat emerge from the burning wreckage. The creature made its home with a local old woman, and when she died, the cat vanished, but appears once every ten years at the crash site.

Children

Further Comments: The group Ghost Shropshire investigated this site and reported recording the voices of children and witnessing apparitions and strange shadows.

Fast Moving Procession

Location: Ratlinghope - Road towards village, along the Long Mynd
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A large group of people following a horse drawn hearse have been seen on several occasions, moving much more swiftly than one should expect.

Misty Horseman

Location: Ruyton - Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Midnight (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Sometimes, around midnight, a thick mist rolls into the churchyard. Soon after, a headless horseman rides in, vanishing into the mist, heading towards an old castle keep.

Madam Sandford

Location: Sandford - Around an area once known as the Black Pool (now filled)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Eighteenth century?
Further Comments: Madam Sandford died while being involved in a property dispute. As a result, her spirit did not rest easy, and took to haunting an area near the black pool, where horses would be taken to drink. The ghost became so problematic that Madam Sandford was banished into a bottle, and the pool was filled with earth to ensure she never returned.

Tall White Figure

Location: Selattyn - Glyn Road, approximately 200 metres outside of village
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: September 2011, around 23:00h
Further Comments: Near to the Pant Glas junction, a witness spotted a tall white human figure twenty metres ahead. He switched on his torch and shouted a warning, but the figure disappeared. The witness said that there are many sightings of white hooded figures around Selattyn, and some believe that they are the guardians of the tomb belonging to a Celtic Prince who is buried on Selattyn hill.

Angry Old Nick

Location: Shelve - The Devil's Chair
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: This rocky outcrop is named after Old Nick after he accidentally dropped stones here instead of Hell's Gutter. A local legend says the Devil hates the area so much that he continues to bring heavy boulders to the area, hoping the county will sink beneath the sea.

Oswald

Location: Shifnal - Jerningham Arms public house (no longer operational)
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Pre-1950
Further Comments: Two guests claimed to have been tossed out of bed by unseen hands while staying in the 'Pink Room', and the landlord heard footsteps emerging from the same room while empty. It was suggested that this entity and the one which haunted the nearby vicarage were the same presence.

Whiston Lady

Location: Shifnal - Pool near Kilsall Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A despairing phantom woman in white, named as a member of the Whiston family, was said to haunt the Dark Walk which ran alongside the lake.

Freddie

Location: Shifnal - Vicarage
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1949
Further Comments: One visitor to the vicarage had a sleepless night, disturbed by strange noises that were blamed on Freddie, the name allocated to the entity by the vicar. The study light would turn itself on unaided.

Lost Bell

Location: Shrewsbury - Bomere Pool
Type: Legend
Date / Time: 24 December (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Several stories surround this pool. In one, a village once stood here, but the villagers mocked God, He sent forth a storm that flooded the area. The church bell can now be heard peeling once a year. Another story says the pool is home to a massive fish - it was caught only once, but escaped, taking the sword of the fisherman (or knight) with him. He now uses the sword to cut any net which falls near him. The final story says the pool is bottomless, and that when any attempt to drain the pool is made, the waters always return overnight.

Monk

Location: Shrewsbury - Dun Cow public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980
Further Comments: Seen in the pub by the wife of the landlord, this phantom monk was said to have bright colours speckled over his habit. A Dutch officer is also rumoured to haunt the building.

Sleeping Dragon

Location: Shrewsbury - Earl's Hill and Pontesford Hill
Type: Dragon
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: Some locals say that the two hills are a sleeping dragon. Another legend connected with the area says that either the king of Mercia or the king of Wessex lost a gold arrow here in the seventh century, and it can only be found by a seventh daughter of a seventh son.

Black Panther

Location: Shrewsbury - Field behind Travelodge at Bayston Hill
Type: ABC
Date / Time: August 2003
Further Comments: Police land and air units were called out to investigate the reports of a long black cat seen sitting in the field, though a search failed to find the creature.

Lady Sarah

Location: Shrewsbury - Hole in the Wall public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Appearing during the dead of night, this female phantom walks through the bar area before vanishing.

Eerie Sounds

Location: Shrewsbury - Nag's Head public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: While the haunting entities have yet to be seen, the combined sounds of crying, moaning and footsteps are said to be enough to unnerve the bravest of souls.

Hanging Woman

Location: Shrewsbury - Prince Rupert Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Room Six is said to be home to a phantom woman who has been spotted hanging from the ceiling. Other rooms have much less grisly mild poltergeist activity which result in small objects being moved around.

Councillor

Location: Shrewsbury - Railway station, entrance from Castle Street and platform three
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 07 March 2023, between 05:30-06:00h (legs), councillor unknown
Further Comments: While waiting on Platform 4, a witness heard footsteps and looked up to see a pair of legs walking towards the platform, visible from just above the knee to just above the ankle. After six paces, the legs disappeared. The witness said the complete figure should have been visible, illuminated by a streetlight. One story says a local Councillor died after part of the station roof collapsed and landed on him. His ghost has been seen waiting around, either sitting or standing, in the area.

Milk Seller

Location: Shrewsbury - Raven Meadow (now Smithfield)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A woman who sold watered down milk was cursed to walk the area after death reciting, 'Weight and measure sold I never, milk and water sold I ever'.

Bedded Woman

Location: Shrewsbury - Rowley's House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The ghost of an unknown woman has been seen lying on the bed displayed in this museum, wearing old period dress. Another ghost, that of a man wearing similar period clothing has also been reported.
