Old Woman

Location: Horndean - Red Lion public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Seen sitting in the pub, this old woman may have taken her life in a room upstairs. Several people have felt the urge to jump from the window of the 'suicide room'.

Headless Woman

Location: Itchen Abbas - Area near Rectory Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown - pre-1933
Further Comments: Mentioned in an old newspaper article, some confusion existed on whether the woman who carried her head to be 'real' or a story constructed by non-locals who had moved into the village.

Headless Woman

Location: Itchen Abbas - Private house close to the river
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Midnight (reoccurring), pre-1935
Further Comments: A phantom woman holding her decapitated head would walk along the driveway, although villagers questioned the credibility of the two witnesses who had claimed to encounter the entity.

Faint Figure

Location: Kimpton - Kimpton Down Inn
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1960s
Further Comments: An outbreak of poltergeist activity was reported after building modifications were made to the dining room - bottles, ornaments and plates were smashed by unseen hands. Several people also reported seeing the ethereal outline of a figure, and locals claimed it to be the wraith of a former landlady murdered by her husband.

Man Missing Leg

Location: Langstone - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1940s?
Further Comments: This tall, thin gentleman has been reported around the village, easily spotted as he lacks a right leg.

Woman in White

Location: Langstone - Royal Oak public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1969
Further Comments: This female form was briefly seen before vanishing into the corner of a bedroom. At least one guest left suddenly after spending the night in the room.

Officer

Location: Lee-on-Solent - RNAS Lee-on-Solent (aka HMS Daedalus)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A witness entering the control tower briefly spotted an RAF officer before the figure vanished. The site ceased being used by the RAF in 1939.

Boy playing Flute

Location: Liphook - General area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This figure was seen and heard on the lanes, in trees and behind bushes in this village - the music he produced described as enchanting, but with an underlying danger. The same area is haunted by a pale white calf.

Highwayman Jacques

Location: Liphook - Royal Anchor Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This robber was shot by lawmen in room six, and his spirit is said to remain. It is also thought that he can be heard travelling along the roads in the village.

Headless Horseman

Location: Litchfield - Angledown Barrow (aka Angle Down Barrow)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Holding his head under one arm, this horseman was said to have manifested when a small group of men attempted to dig up the barrow while looking for treasure (reputed to be a golden image).

Golden Horseshoes

Location: Longstock - Wooded area on the downs known as Money Bunt
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A horse shod with golden shoes is said to be buried in this area.

Fairies

Location: Lymington - Buckland Rings
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The site of an Iron Age hill fort was said to be the haunt of fairies.

Coachman

Location: Lymington - The Angel public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The kitchen of the pub is reportedly haunted by this former coach driver, but it is unsure whether the same entity is responsible for playing a phantom piano in other parts of the building. A ghostly sailor has also been spotted, and a phantom blonde woman haunts the second floor.

Henry Card

Location: Lymington - Waggon and Horses public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1893 onwards
Further Comments: Local gamekeeper Card accidently shot himself in the head with a shotgun he thought was empty, while in the tap room of the pub. His quiet ghost was last seen floating through a wall.

John Ives

Location: Lyndhurst - Fox and Hounds Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A former landlord, John Ives celebrated New Year's Eve by drinking too much and falling into the fire, dying of his injuries. Now John is said to haunt the inn, especially spooking staff in the cellar.

Richard Fitzgeorge

Location: Lyndhurst - Glasshayes Mansion (demolition started in 2024)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 07 July (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Richard Fitzgeorge de Stacpoole, 1st Duc de Stacpoole, is said to throw a party for the dead in July, the music from which can be heard. At other times of the year, people have reported faces at the windows of empty parts of the building or experiencing the sensation of being watched.

Tall Man

Location: Lyndhurst - Swan Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A local legend says that the inn is haunted by the ghost of a tall man, thought to be a former landlord who killed himself.

Dog Hater

Location: Meonstoke - Meonstoke House
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1975-1976
Further Comments: The family troubled by a noisy spirit in this house first reported their dog becoming extraordinarily excited, to such an extent their pet had to be rehoused. Soon after a certain door in the building would never remain closed, and the doorbell would ring on its own accord.

Invisible Carriage

Location: Michelmersh - Between Manor Farm & Dower House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Heard but not seen, a horse drawn carriage moves between these two buildings, driven by Lord Ogle.

Monk

Location: Milford on Sea - Hurst Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This castle is the reputed home of a phantom monk.

Woman in Green

Location: Milton - Copnor Road
Type: Other
Date / Time: A Sunday in June 1980
Further Comments: A man was stopped in the street by an older woman wearing a long green coat who asked him a series of yes/no questions which were all based around human relationships. The man recalled that the woman was so frail that she had to hold on to railings to support herself, and her eyes blinked in an unnaturally slow manner. After the questions had finished, she thanked him for his time. As the man walked away, he became concerned about her frailty and turned to ask if she required help in any way, but she had vanished.

Cat People

Location: Minstead - General area in the New Forest
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: 1920s
Further Comments: It was said around this time that several little people climbed the trees of the forest, possessing catlike attributes for better balance.


The Rufus Stone.

King William II

Location: Minstead - New Forest, the Rufus Stone
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 02 August (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Murdered (allegedly) on this spot by a close friend, William II is now doomed to rise on the anniversary of his death and walk to Winchester.

Tapping

Location: Mottisfont - Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: February 2021
Further Comments: After Romsey fire station responded to a false alarm at the abbey, they took to twitter to say that some of the crew believed the abbey to be haunted. At a previous call out a firefighter had felt a tap on their shoulder when no one was nearby.

Blind Peter

Location: Netley - Netley Abbey ruins
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 31 October (reoccurring) Grey Ladies seen
Further Comments: On Halloween three misty women appear and walk along the ruin's walls. The sounds of bells can also be heard on this night. Another presence is Blind Peter. He is less choosey on the date on which he appears and just wanders around the ruins of the abbey. Finally, there is a legend that a secret underground passage was sealed after the last man to enter it emerged shortly after, screaming 'block it up!' before dropping dead - the passage may be connected to the tales of treasure buried on site.
