Further Comments: This area of the lane is said to be haunted by a ghostly figure, though the exact details are not forthcoming.

Coach

Location: Horsley - Chavenage Manor, near the town
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: During a death in family
Further Comments: The coach, driven by a headless man, arrives just after the death of the manor's owner, where his soul is said to embark. A shadowy figure has also been spotted in parts of the house, vanishing if approached.

Location: Humberstone - Hoston Stone (aka Hoston)

Further Comments: This large piece of granitic rock was once believed to be the home to fairies. A nineteenth century owner of the land removed part of the stone so his plough could pass over it, but after which his fortune vanished, and he died in a poorhouse.

Wife and Child

Location: Hyde - Ragged Cot public house

Further Comments: The 1760 landlord of this establishment pushed his wife and baby down the stairs during an argument, killing them both. He tried to conceal the bodies in a chest, but they were discovered by the authorities. The ghostly mother and child were seen by a policeman as they removed the corpses.

Soldier?

Location: Hyde - Unnamed stony knoll in area (likely to be no longer present)

Date / Time: Nineteenth century
Further Comments: An area covered in rocks which could have been part of a tumulus was said to contain gold and the bodies of soldiers. It was said to be haunted.

Blue Boy

Further Comments: The phantom child wearing blue clothing reported at the nearby Old Vicarage has also been observed at this farmhouse.

Two Mauds

Location: Kempsford - River and Lady Maud's Walk

Further Comments: Two different Lady Mauds are said to haunt here. The first Maud cries out for her son who drowned in the ford - Maud's husband left her shortly after the death. The second Maud was murdered by her husband who mistakenly thought she was having an affair. This latter phantom is said to emerge from the water and pass along Lady Maud's Walk, heading towards the Old Vicarage, but only when the weather is foggy.

Woman with Child

Location: Kempsford - St Mary's Vicarage

Further Comments: A phantom woman wearing clothing dating from the seventeenth century, holding her baby, reputedly glides down the staircase here. The same staircase is also haunted by a young boy wearing blue. Another phantom said to lurk within the building include a tall man with a high hat and long coat, while a monk is reputed to haunt the garden.

Black Monk

Further Comments: Face concealed under a large hood, this shade frequents the graveyard, though has not been seen in recent years. A nun was also said to haunt the site.

Malignant Figure

Location: Leonard Stanley - Priory Farm

Further Comments: An amateur photographer by the name of Cook photographed an old alter in a farm building. On the developed plate, Cook could see a phantom figure with a 'malignant expression' in the background. From that moment onwards, misfortune followed Cook, only leaving him after he destroyed the plate. In 1963 the owner of the property said that he had been on the site for 31 years and had never experienced anything strange.

Coach Crash

Location: Long Newnton? - Jackament's Bottom - was a farm between Kemble and Badminton

Further Comments: A coach crash which occurred here killing the driver was reported to have been caused when a phantom dog appeared; its presence made the horses bolt which upset the carriage.

Attacked Collie

Location: Longhope - Old Moor's Wood

Further Comments: A collie named Basil was attacked by a large creature in the woods; the vet who stitched up the ten centimetre tear on the neck said the injury looked as if it was caused by a cat.

Nan Tow

Further Comments: A local witch, Nan Tow, was said to be buried in an upright position by a Duke of Beaufort within this barrow.

Walking Stone

Further Comments: When the stone hears the clock at Stow on the Wold strike twelve, it goes down to Lady Well to sip the water.

Man without Legs

Location: Lydney - Docks area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1934
Further Comments: One of the witnesses to this ghost reported that the misty figure wore a long raincoat and hat, but his legs were not there. The phantom would dissolve away if anyone moved too close. Many believed the entity was a man hanged on the docks after being found guilty murdering a girl on nearby marshland.

Footprint

Further Comments: Bonding Resin that was left overnight for testing was found the following morning with three child's footprints imprinted - each print was eight centimetres in length, with a fourteen centimetre 'step' between each one. Needless to say, the unit had a strict 'no children' policy.

Heart Beats

Further Comments: Mr and Mrs Mizen were awoken dozens of times in the night by the sound of muffled heartbeats. They could hear the noise in every room of the house, though four of their sons who also lived there could not hear anything. Environment Health equipment detected the sound, but the operators could not offer any explanation.

Tablet Curse

Location: Lydney - Roman temple of Nodens, Lydney Park

Further Comments: A curse written on a tablet was found on this site. Translated from Latin, the curse read, 'For the god Nodens. Silvianus has lost a ring and has donated one half (its worth) to Nodens. Among those named Senicianus permit no good health until it is returned to the temple of Nodens'. The ring had previously been discovered in 1785 at Silchester. It is believed that ring and curse influenced Tolkien's One Ring.

Footfalls

Further Comments: Footsteps have been reported all over the building, though the cellar appears to be the hub of the haunting, with reported banging and the phantom outline of a person seen there.

Murdered Grenville

Location: Mickleton - Unidentified field close to woodland
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Dressed in white clothing and a veil, this ghostly figure moves away if approached, ultimately vanishing with a scream. One story says the figure is a lady belonging to the Grenville family who was murdered in the area. She may occasionally be accompanied by a white animal which resembles a calf.

Hooting Goblin

Further Comments: Recognised by his extremely loud call, normally heard around midnight, this fellow has never been seen.

Transparent Hound

Location: Minchinhampton - Area of Woefuldane Bottom, aka Woeful Danes' Bottom, aka Woeful Dane Bottom

Further Comments: The phantom hound which stalks the road here is said to be semi-transparent. Phantom horsemen are also said to ride through the area.
