Warning the Radcliffes'

Date / Time: Prior to a family disaster
Further Comments: A tall figure draped in grey robes is supposed to manifest to warn the Radcliff family of any impending disaster.

Ermengarde

Location: Derwentwater - St Herbert's Island
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Ermengarde attempted to seduce a local holy man - for the sin, her ghost was cursed to haunt the island.

Hand

Location: Dovenby - Wooded area on road between village and Tallentire
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Weather Dependent: Dark, stormy nights
Further Comments: A disembodied hand is reported to reach out from the trees and push passing cyclists from their bikes.

Adult Puma

Location: Drigg - Shore road
Type: ABC
Date / Time: Summer 2005
Further Comments: Out walking her dog, a woman spotted what she thought was an adult puma standing on the roadside. It ran off through a hedgerow after a few seconds. Another person also spotted the creature in the same area.

Isir

Location: Eamont Bridge - Cave by the river

Further Comments: This natural dwelling was once home to a giant named Isir, who enjoyed the taste of human meat. His fate is unknown.

Hugh Cesario

Location: Edenhall - Isis Parlis cave system
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Caves still present
Further Comments: This cave system was once the home to Hugh Cesario, a giant who either fought on the side of good, or took local men, women and farm animals back to the cave to snack on.

Headless Hound

Location: Eggholme - General area
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The large black dog which brings death and misfortune in this neighbourhood is reportedly headless.

Misty Shape

Location: Egremont - Tannery, Beck Green (no longer operational)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1950s
Further Comments: A total of nine people, including a retired policeman, watched a headless misty figure with no feet rise from the ground and head off towards the tannery. Outside the building the phantom was joined by another smaller figure before vanishing through a door.

Farmer on Pony Back

Location: Egremont - Tarpot area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 24 December (reoccurring)
Further Comments: This old man vanished without trace when returning home from an inn on a long forgotten Christmas Eve - both he and his ride are occasionally seen on the anniversary of the mystery.

Exploding Glasses

Location: Egremont - The Kings Arms
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1997
Further Comments: The pub was besieged by poltergeist activity - the owner was locked in the basement for twenty minutes, a knife was found embedded in the kitchen wall, and a glass exploded in the bar.

John Foxcroft

Location: Elterwater - Langdale Outdoor Education Centre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1979
Further Comments: Foxcroft died alongside three other men in an explosion at a gunpowder factory that once stood here. His phantom was reported as haunting the location during the 1970s.

Neddy Bogle

Location: Elterwater - Old cairn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre-twentieth century
Further Comments: The Neddy Bogle was said to haunt the area where these recently identified stones are found.

Pony with Coffin

Location: Eskdale - Burnmoor Tarn, path leading from village to Wasdale
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Weather Dependent: Misty conditions
Further Comments: Appearing when the mist is thick, this ghostly pony silently and slowly makes its way along the path with a coffin strapped to its back.

Ann Lamplugh

Location: Eskdale - Irton Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Ann's ghost, dressed in black, reportedly haunts the building after refusing to give aid to Henry IV, when he asked for help in fleeing his enemies...

Laughter

Location: Eskdale - Wooded area near Santon Bridge
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century
Further Comments: Several men heard female laughter, accompanied by loud barking and screeching, pass overhead when camping in the woods.

Walker

Location: Garrigill - Ivy House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century?
Further Comments: The upper part of this building is said to be quietly haunted by a ghost who walks around and is said to be no trouble to anyone.

Figure

Location: Garsdale Head - Area around the railway station
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A local legend says this area is haunted by a person killed on the track. One signalman spotted a figure pass his box but could not find anything after investigating.

Gilsland Boy

Location: Gilsland - Triermain Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: While living, this young boy became lost on the nearby snow-covered common and froze to death. His shivering form is now seen by the castle walls, and on the odd occasion will reach out and grab people (this is supposed to mark the witness's impending death, the area of the body touched being the primary area responsible for death).

Monk

Location: Gosforth - Gosforth Hall Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Seen drifting along corridors, the monk may also be responsible for the poltergeist outbreak in the kitchen and the strange face occasionally seen peeking in through the windows upstairs.

Faces in the Mist

Location: Grasmere - Codale Tarn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: It is said that some climbers have seen a strange face peering out at them from the mists as they ascend the tarn.

Shepherds

Location: Grasmere - Seat Sandal
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1 August 1949
Further Comments: Two women out walking on the hill could hear a couple of men talking and occasionally whistling as if calling a dog. However, even though it was a clear afternoon and the women could see for miles around, they could not see the source of the sounds.

Boggle

Location: Graythwaite - Wooded areas
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This phantom goblin like entity would terrify travellers walking the area late at night.

Spooked Horses

Location: Great Broughton - Field where St Lawrence's chapel once stood
Type: Other
Date / Time: Field still present
Further Comments: A field where this old chapel stood is said to still have an uneasy 'feeling' about it, which has an influence on people and animals alike.

Livvy

Location: Great Urswick - General Burgoyne public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2016
Further Comments: The bar manager watched a faceless girl in a white nightgown walk through the closed front door. The ghost is thought to be Livvy, who drowned in the Urswick Tarn. A skull nicknamed 'Jimmy', believed to be bad luck if touched, is kept in a cupboard that sometimes opens on its own.

Waiting Wife

Location: Greenhead - Blenkinsopp Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre-1951
Further Comments: Lady de Blenkinsopp is said to wait for her husband to return from the crusades, where he went after a disagreement over gold. Some reports state that the treasure is still hidden on the site.
