Further Comments: Walking to catch a bus early one morning, two men spotted another man in period clothing walking a lurcher-type dog. Laughing and believing that he was coming back from a fancy dress party, the two men turned and continued to watch the man as he walked up a hill. However, he slowly disappeared, as if walking up a hill with a shallower gradient.

Further Comments: The phantom woman wearing a blue silk dress only appears to men in a particular bedroom. The entity sits on the end of the bed, waking the occupier.

Further Comments: The rustling of a dress has been reported in the early hours of the morning, believed to belong to the lady dressed in grey, who has been seen in the building. She has been identified as Elizabeth, the disabled daughter of the Bragg family who resided here.

Further Comments: Simon was shown a secret seam of copper by fairies - he mined it, but bad luck followed - he was blown up when a keg of gunpowder exploded. Simon's shade is said to hang around the rock face that now bears his name.

Further Comments: Appearing early in the morning, and/or Christmas night (although not every year) this ghostly child has golden hair and glows like an angel. Some believe that those who see him are blessed with wealth and power but also cursed with a violent death. Drumming is also said to be occasionally heard; it is speculated that the radiant boy creates the sounds.

Further Comments: Peg Sneddle, or Elizabeth Sleddall as she was known in life, would manifest prior to a death in the Machell family (she was married to a Machell, but used her maiden name after his premature death). This ceased when her body was hidden under a large rock in the nearby river, though it would reappear every year in September. A phantom coach and four also haunts the same area.

Further Comments: One of the few vampire reports in the UK, this creature attacked a young girl in this building. One of her brothers witnessed the attack and shot the monster in the leg. The blood trail enabled them to track it to the village graveyard, where it was dug up and burnt.

Further Comments: The church was to be erected at the top of the valley, with heavy stones stacked ready for the construction. Just before the building work commenced, all the building material was moved to where the church now stands (the villagers did not dare move them back).

Further Comments: It is debated whether Cross Fell is named after the angry (or cross) spirits that haunt it, or after a cross that legend says St Augustine erected to rid the area of the spirits.

Further Comments: These three kings occasionally return, re-enacting a scene that happened in the dark ages when they first met to discuss the Norse threat. Another phantom reported here is Lady Dacre - she was walled up alive with her dead lover after her husband discovered her illicit affair. Her phantom sobs and screams can now be heard.

Further Comments: Room twelve is said to be haunted by giggling and whispering, while room four is home to a phantom maid who took her own life. In addition, barrels have been heard rolling in the basement (unaided by mortal hand) and a man in Victorian clothing spotted around the grounds.

Further Comments: A ghostly figure in robes was seen walking towards the gatehouse before vanishing into a wall. It is said the monk sometimes appears on horseback, and the site is also haunted by a white woman.

Further Comments: The story of the area being haunted by a lad who drowned in the nearby river may date back dozens of years. A soaking wet boy was seen by one witness standing by a bus stop near the Sun Inn - after initially walking past, the witness turned to offer help to the dishevelled child, but he had vanished.

Further Comments: A visitor to the inn watched his jacket swinging forcefully on a coat hook, unaided by wind or human hand. The landlord told the witness that other patrons had seen ghostly figures, and that he himself had experienced mild poltergeist phenomena.
