Caroline and Friends

Further Comments: In 2002, a worker at the museum encountered several ghostly children on the site, one of which followed her home. The ghosts were described as non-threatening. The Shadow Seekers paranormal team were called in 2007 and claimed to have used dowsing rods to determine that the spirits of four children remained in the mill - Caroline, Sarah, Rebecca and John.

Something

Further Comments: A few references exist of this site being haunted, but by what and who is pretty unclear.

White Dog

Location: Macclesfield - South of railway station
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: November 2011, around 21:45
Further Comments: Departing the station, this train driver reported seeing a white misty dog move quickly across the track from left to right. One side of the railway stands a six metre high wall, while on the other a 3.5 metre high mesh fence - nowhere where the dog could have come from or disappeared to.

George

Location: Malpas - The Vaults public house

Further Comments: This pub spirit is heard walking around at night, opening and closing doors.

Headless King Charles

Location: Marple - Marple Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The headless ghost of King Charles has been seen here, though he never visited the place. The nearby river Goyt is haunted by a wailing woman who once lived at the hall - her lover was drowned in the river, and she waits and cries near the spot.

Singer

Location: Middlewich - Chadwick Fields (adult day care centre), Coronation Road

Further Comments: This noisy member of the building sings, walks around the upper part of the floor, slams doors, and sometimes locks the bathroom door, just for fun.


Some dragon's eyes are easy to hit.

Slain Dragon

Location: Moston - Exact location unknown
Type: Dragon
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A local story tells of how Sir Thomas Venables shot and killed a dragon here by shooting an arrow into the eye, just as it picked up a small child to eat.

Sister Ida

Location: Moulton - Vale Royal Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Sister Ida's shade was thought to come back to bring attention to the suspicious death of the abbess. An unnamed road leading to the abbey is haunted by a decapitated head that rolls on the floor - this belonged to a monk murdered while taking a message to the building.

Fire Protection

Location: Nantwich - Churche's Mansion

Further Comments: This house has a salamander carved into the wall to protect it from fire. It appears to have worked; a large blaze in the community in 1583 levelled most of the town but failed to touch the protected home.

Former Owner

Location: Nantwich - Lamb Hotel (now closed)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: A former owner of the hotel killed himself with a shotgun after discovering his wife was having an affair. His ghost was blamed for ringing bells in the kitchen after it had been closed for the night.

Knuckle Rapping

Location: Nantwich - Private house, Hospital Street
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1947
Further Comments: The home of Ernest Haywood featured in the news after a phantom started to create several sounds, including footsteps on the staircase, knuckles rapping on the wall, and the loud bang of a heavy sack being dropped.

Grey Lady

Location: Nantwich - Rookery Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This phantom lady is reputed to walk the corridors of the hotel leaving the scent of flowers as she passes. Her portrait hangs in the drawing room. Another phantom is that of a young lad who cries over his missing dog (the grave of which is close to the walled garden).

Priest

Location: Neston - Church

Further Comments: An unknown priest once arrived here and gave mass before mysteriously vanishing. It was later discovered that his description matched that of a former priest buried in the churchyard.


A strange looking black dog.

Black Hound

Location: Neston - General area

Further Comments: To see this huge black dog is normally a sign of ill fortune.

Sir Gaulter and Lady Friend

Location: Northenden - Area near the Mersea
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Weather Dependent: Stormy nights
Further Comments: These two figures reportedly haunt the shoreline of the Mersea.

Nun

Location: Northwich - Hartford Hall Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A former nunnery, this hall now claims to be home to a ghostly nun.

Stephanie

Location: Northwich - Primary School in the area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: A local myth tells of a young girl named Stephanie died in a fire (or a car crash, or run over by a steamroller, depending on the story); her ghost returned to the school and could be heard screaming 'Mummy, mummy, nooo...!'

Jack

Location: Northwich - Unknown private house

Further Comments: A mother called in a clairvoyant after she heard a man's voice whispering over her baby's intercom. The house had been reported as haunted by its previous occupiers, by an old man named Jack who had died there.

Cavalier

Location: Northwich - Wincham Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s-2010s
Further Comments: Several entities are said to be present at this venue, including a Cavalier and a child who ran through a wall.

Dropped by Old Nick

Location: Over - Church
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The church once stood in the middle of the village, but the Devil tried to run off with it. He dropped the building where it currently stands when he heard the ringing of the bells at a nearby abbey.

Man in Bowler Hat

Location: Over Alderley - School Lane, close to abandoned school
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Winter 2015
Further Comments: After feeling uneasy and experiencing a sensation of being watched, a witness turned to find that she was being followed by a man wearing a bowler hat which cast a shadow over his face. The only sound the witness could hear was her own footsteps in the snow. Terrified, she fled.

Old Lady in Red

Location: Parkgate - Quay House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This old woman often appeared wearing a large red cape, walking across one of the rooms before taking a seat and waiting for an unknown event.

Dueller and Wife

Location: Plumley - Tabley Old Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The ghostly male figure was killed after a fight, his wife taking her own life in grief. Both figures stand together on the balcony.

Figure in Blue

Location: Poynton - Middlewood Station
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 14 February 1995, around 18:15h
Further Comments: The only person waiting at the station watched as a figure in blue cross the platform and down onto the tracks, where it appeared to lay and disappear from view. The witness walked to the platform edge and looked for the figure, but no one could be seen. The story was later told to another person, who said the figure had been seen previously.

Cattle Killer

Location: Preston Brook - Headless cross (a sandstone block) in a field near Newton crossroads (may have been moved for the M56 construction)

Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Two stones once stood here and were moved to a ditch by a farmer who wanted to clear the land. Soon after the removal, the farmer's cattle died, the spring water ran red, and the farmhouse became home to a violent poltergeist which smashed mirrors and windows. Normality returned when the stones were replaced.
