John Middleton

Further Comments: The grave of Middleton can be found here, a local hero who stood around 282 centimetres tall.

Photographed Banana

Further Comments: Though the building itself is not haunted, one story says that a family dining here had a poltergeist following them around wherever they went, and it appeared in a photograph taken at this site (taking the form of a misty banana!).

Frightened Woman

Location: Handforth - Old Parsonage

Date / Time: Eighteenth century onwards
Further Comments: A woman who died of fright when Prince Charles visited Handforth Hall in 1745 was said to continue to remain here. A gamekeeper with a black dog also haunted the area but may have been laid by a parson.

Brown Lady

Further Comments: The ghost of this phantom woman haunted a once sealed room in the pub, though there have not been any reported sightings as of late.

Man in Tweeds

Location: Hoylake - Royal Hotel, and golf course

Further Comments: Observed while walking the corridors, this spook wears a cap and tweed jacket. It may be the same entity that has been seen on the golf course, wearing clothing that can be dated to the century.

Leopard Cat

Location: Kingley - Crewood Hall Farm

Further Comments: A farmer claimed he shot at a large golden cat that was on his land.

The Thing of Delamere

Location: Kingsley - Delamere Forest

Further Comments: Many locals reported a dog-like creature in the forest here, standing sixty centimetres tall. While the beast was described as having a tail like a fox, it looked more like an Alsatian dog.

Hooded Figure

Location: Kingsley - Road towards Frodsham, near cemetery

Further Comments: A hooded figure, without visible legs, by the edge of the road was spotted by a driver. The entity crossed the road in front of oncoming traffic, although no vehicles reacted, and the figure vanished as the driver reached the spot where it had first been seen.

White Rider

Further Comments: A witness who returned home after night fishing at the mere reported seeing a ghostly woman riding a horse around the lake.

Annie Sarah Pollitt

Location: Knutsford - Lord Eldon public house

Further Comments: Knutford's first May Queen is thought to haunt this pub, with many of the staff reporting sightings of her white ghostly form in the lower rooms.

A phantom white lorry.

White HGV

Location: Knutsford - M6 near the town

Further Comments: A driver was terrified as a glowing white lorry charged towards him travelling the wrong way down the M6. He pulled onto the hard shoulder and closed his eyes, feeling the HGV drive past - but looking into his rear view mirror immediately after, there was nothing there.

Edward Higgins

Location: Knutsford - Royal George Hotel

Further Comments: A former robber and burglar, Higgins was caught, killed, and now haunts the hotel where he made his base of operations. A phantom coach has been seen and heard moving over cobbles outside the building.

Figure

Location: Knutsford - Tatton Mile (road running next to Tatton Park)

Further Comments: Driving with his full beams on, in 2009 this driver spotted the figure of a man standing in the road with his hand out, as if he wanted the car to stop. As the car drew closer, the figure vanished, causing the driver to swerve out of shock. Twelve years later, a couple in their car spotted a tall dark figure facing the road by the end of the wall. The figure looked curious enough for them to turn the car around to have another look, but no one could be found and there was no other traffic.

Further Comments: Since featuring on the television programme 'Most Haunted', the hall has gained a reputation for being creaky and spooky.

Swaying Glasses

Location: Lower Peover - Crown Inn

Further Comments: Several tabloid newspapers reported Nigel Ramsay, manager of the inn, had experienced several spooky occurrences on site, including swaying glasses and a flying TV remote control.

Beryl

Location: Lymm - Green Dragon public house

Further Comments: Thoughtfully nicknamed by staff and visitors, this old lady was seen in the pub.

Small Man

Location: Lymm - Statham Lodge hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: More likely to be a distant folk memory than a true ghost story, the attic of this building was said to be haunted by a little man. In truth, James Wilson (a very short man) lived in the attic in the early nineteenth century, most likely to escape mockery, and after his death, his desire for privacy lived on in the minds of his neighbours.

Richard and Friends

Location: Macclesfield - Bate Hall public house

Further Comments: Landlord Sean Hutchinson claimed in the local press that fourteen entities haunt this pub, including Richard, a little boy who plays hide and seek, a grey lady, and something which likes to scream.

Severed Arm

Location: Macclesfield - Capesthrone Hall

Further Comments: This ethereal limb has been seen trying to open a window in the premises! An assemblage of shadows has also been seen, lurking near the family vault, while a female form dressed in grey drifts around the ground floor.

Wish Steps

Further Comments: Local legend says that if you can run up the cobbled steps in one breath you will receive anything you wish for.

Female in Old Attire

Location: Macclesfield - Gawsworth Hall and general area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Autumn (reoccurring)
Further Comments: A female phantom is reported to drift around the courtyard of Gawsworth Hall, patrolling nearby lanes, and in the churchyard. Some have named her as Mary Fitton, a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth I.

White Woman

Location: Macclesfield - Kendel Road (area known locally as the Birdy)

Further Comments: This area is reputed to be haunted by a white woman with no feet.

White Figure

Location: Macclesfield - Large, private house near churchyard

Further Comments: A family moved out of their home after seeing a white figure with a grotesque face in one of the rooms - the two witnesses knocked a door from its hinges while trying to escape the entity.

Jester

Location: Macclesfield - Maggoty's Wood

Further Comments: A figure has been reported dancing about the woods, their clothing adjourned with bells. The grave of the last 'real' jester in England is housed in this wooded area, and it is believed that the shade is he.
