Further Comments: While driving back from Liverpool, a driver spotted a bright pair of headlights rapidly approaching from behind. Just as the driver thought he would be overtaken, the lights vanished. Believing that a car had crashed, the drier turned around and looked for it, but could find nothing.

Further Comments: Killed in an accident in the 1920s, it was reported that the former rider sometimes appeared on foot, walking next to witnesses before fading away.

Further Comments: An owner noticed that this grey lady always disappeared by walking into the same area in the wall - when the zone was knocked through, a skeleton was discovered.

Further Comments: While walking to Frodsham from the Delamere Forest station, two people encountered a white lady. She stared at them for a couple of minutes before floating upwards into the trees.

Further Comments: Returning from a late shift at work, this witness drove past a horse pulling a small, two wheeled carriage that was dimly lit by lanterns. The driver of the carriage remained motionless as the witness's car went by.

Further Comments: A mistress of Sir Piers Leigh who died 1422, Blanche pined away after hearing news about his death. Pier's funeral procession is now seen advancing towards the house, with Blanche wailing a short distance behind it. Another group of ghosts, this time children, have been seen playing on a bed in the Knight's Bedroom. Blanche may have last been seen by three people arrested for trespassing nearby, with their three descriptions of the ghostly figure given to the police marrying up perfectly.

Further Comments: The site of a murder of William Wood in 1823, the hole left in the ground caused by the impact of his head as it hit the grass has remained evermore; the grass in it died, no other plants will grow on the spot, and all attempts to fill the hole have failed. Well, a marker stone recording the murder is at the site, but the hole is no longer present!

Further Comments: A couple out walking on Christmas Day encountered an overwhelming scent of old fashioned perfume which they could taste at the back of the throat. No other person had been seen for hours.

Further Comments: A 'typical' poltergeist case (with thrown items and rearranged furniture), the outstanding feature of this case was a personal computer, a BBC B Microcomputer, that several 'spirits' used for communication purposes - possibly a first.

Further Comments: While named after a phantom seen nearby, the inn is home to three other ghosts. A former landlady spotted a Royalist courtier, near the bat and another male figure in the cellar. A woman dressed in white has been seen by other owners and customers.

Further Comments: A story says that young Dorothy was accidentally decapitated by her father as he tried to save her from a group of drunken Roundheads. Her headless form is now reported to drift aimlessly around the village. The local pub is named after her sad tale.

Further Comments: Depending on the story, this man was either pushed or slipped from the roof while working on the building - either way, he has been named as the ghost that now walks the corridors.

Further Comments: Jean Marc Mariole and wife Charlotte made the Mail's headlines in February after revealing they had to spend nights in hotels to escape the entity haunting their flat. They reported that the bed sheets would lift and fall, doors would close, a shower curtain slid backwards and forwards, and Jean felt heavy breathing on the back of his neck.

Further Comments: Charlotte, owner of the establishment, claimed in the national press that her salon was haunted by the spirit of her mum. The smell of her mother's favourite food, burnt buttered toast, would suddenly fill the shop. A shadowy figure was also picked up on CCTV.

Further Comments: Jim was disliked while living, local emotion soon turning to hate once the man returned to the area after he died. The noisy spirit was finally exorcised by a team of preachers.

Further Comments: An older woman was spotted sitting on a bench at the top of this hill. The woman was in her fifties or sixties, and wore a light summer dress, even though the day was cold and the rain fell hard. The witness glanced away for a moment, and when she looked back, the woman had vanished. The witness checked bench (which was soaking wet) and the only possible hiding place (a nearby tree), but when she failed to find the woman, she felt her skin crawl and fled the scene.

Further Comments: Jinny Chorlton was said to have returned after her death. It would appear that after her old home was demolished, she did not come back again.

Further Comments: A member of Queen Elizabeth I's court, Mary was known for her promiscuous lifestyle, though she finally settled down and married locally. She now patrols the area near her former home.

Further Comments: The driver and two passengers of a vehicle could clearly see the solid apparition of a woman dressed in a black Victorian-style dress, including a bonnet type hat. The woman stood motionless on the roadside, near a metal gate, and the witnesses were confident the figure would have been caught on the front and rear cameras which continuously recorded in the vehicle. When reviewing the footage, the location had been recorded but the figure not visible.

Further Comments: Maggoty Wood takes its name from Samuel Johnson, England's last professional jester, who is buried in the wood. A legend says that he appears to anyone who walks around the grave twelve times.

Further Comments: Returning over the hills from a friend's house, a driver spotted a woman on the side of the road. She was thin, tall, and eerie. The driver was scared and drove on, only to see the same woman two hundred yards (180 metres) further down the road. The driver did not use the road again.
