Sad Nun

Further Comments: Her origin unknown, the figure of a lonely nun with her head hung low has been spotted walking across the grounds.

Raining Straw

Location: Hepworth - Area around the Duke of Marlborough public house
Type: Other
Date / Time: 28 July 1992
Further Comments: A rain of barley straw fell in the village, covering one end of the place. A local man watched the straw spinning around in the air below stopping and suddenly falling.

Luck of Hintlesham

Location: Hintlesham - Hintlesham Hall
Type: Curse
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A cursed mannequin was once stored here - if removed, it was believed disaster would soon follow, and the owner would lose possession of the hall.

Remorseful Stepmother

Location: Hintlesham - Hintlesham Hall. Stairs and library
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The ghost of a female Lloyd family member walks the stairs and library, eternally suffering for letting her stepson starve to death. The sound of a baby crying was also said to haunt a room but stopped after the remains of a young child were recovered from a fireplace.

Horses' Hooves

Location: Holbrook - Stutton Hill

Further Comments: The hill is apparently home to the sound of horses moving around, the noise providing an uneasy feeling to any witness.

Willo' the Wisp

Location: Hollesley - Path leading to Shingle Street
Type: Other
Date / Time: January 2010
Further Comments: Watched for a period of several minutes by two people, a single greenish glowing ball of light danced around the path and marsh.

Cats

Location: Hollesley - Shingle Street and general area
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 1975 (circa), 2004, 2008, 2010s
Further Comments: In 2004 a prison guard spotted a large cat along a road, and four years later another witness encountered a large brown cat. Big Cats of Suffolk website reported that a forester had been warned by colleagues about large cats in the area during the 1970s, and in 2013 stool, hair and field signs were found.

Black Panther

Location: Holton St Mary - Exact location not known

Further Comments: A 'stooped' large feline was reported in the area.

Howling

Location: Homersfield - Bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A noisy ghost (perhaps the entity from the Homersfield house that was exorcised) was laid under this bridge. Unfortunately, during repair work on the structure, the ghost was freed; it can now be heard moaning and howling under the bridge.

Distracted by Pigeons

Location: Homersfield - Exact location unknown

Further Comments: A house in the village had to be exorcised by the local priest; the ghost would interrupt the procedure, until the householder managed to distract the spirit by releasing two pigeons that the ghost watched until the priest finished his task.

Exploding Light Bulbs

Location: Honey Tye - Red Lion public house, and all over village

Further Comments: A poltergeist was held accountable for exploding light bulbs and electrical items that turned themselves on and off - this happened in dozens of homes over the village.

Big Cats

Location: Honington - General area
Type: ABC
Date / Time: April 1985
Further Comments: Several sightings of ABCs occurred in 1985, though it was unclear whether they were of a single creature or a possible family.

Cigarette Smoking Man

Location: Honington - RAF Honington
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1979/80, and June 1983
Further Comments: In 1983 two RAF police officers spotted a man dressed in Second World War flying kit smoking a cigarette between two barbed wire fences. They challenged the man, who turned, walked through one of the fences, and faded away. Three years prior to this encounter, a converted H block was home to an entity which could be heard breathing heavily and would occasionally attack people in their beds. A local story reports that a USAF bomber exploded on take-off during the war, and one of the crew's bodies was never found.

Flying Fortress

Location: Horham - Old Horham Airfield

Further Comments: A ghostly B-17 Flying Fortress reportedly passes overhead to land on the remains of the runway at this former airfield.

Highwaymen

Location: How Hill - London Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A popular place to display the corpses of highway robbers, their shades now walk where the bodies hung.

Glint of King Edmund's Spurs

Location: Hoxne - Goldbrook Bridge
Type: Curse
Date / Time: 870 onwards
Further Comments: Discovered hiding under the bridge after the glint of his spurs attracted the attention of a pair of newlyweds, Edmund was taken and beheaded. The glint is still seen, and it is considered unlucky for newly wedded couples to cross the bridge.

Man with Curly Hair

Location: Hoxne - Road close near the bridge
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Circa 1982, summer, around 19:00h - 20:00h
Further Comments: Driving through the village, a witness watched a figure walking along the middle of the road, wearing a long curly wig like that of a barrister. The figure waved at the witness, who drove away after feeling uncomfortable.

Edmund's Head

Location: Hoxne - Woodland, exact location not known
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Possibly November 869
Further Comments: After Edmund of East Anglia (later known as St Edmund) was defeated in battle, his enemies removed his head and hid it in the deepest part of the forest. Edmund's supporters tried to find the head but were unable to do so, until they called out 'where are you?' and heard the reply 'here!'. The supporters followed the voice and found his head, protected by a wolf that allowed them to take the missing piece of Edmund back to his body.

Horse Worrier

Location: Icklingham - Hill near Deadman's Grave (now an SSSI)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The ghost of a man and his horse, supposedly buried under the hill, were blamed for worrying other horses after dark, preventing them from using tracks through the area.

Headless Shape on Horseback

Location: Icklingham - Icklingham Way, southern corner
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The Archbishop of Sudbury (or another senior religious figure) was decapitated near to this point by his enemies, the man now returns on dark nights to retrace the route of his death. Another story names the headless horseman as a highwayman, or one of three rebels executed nearby for the murder of the Archbishop.

Unearthly Forms

Location: Icklingham - Site of possible small Roman town
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre 1871
Further Comments: Prior to the discovery of Roman stone coffins in 1871, the site bordered a field which contained a so-called witches' path. 'Unearthly forms' seen in a gap on the edge of the field after dark were blamed when a horse threw its rider, the accident killing the man.

Cromwell's Treasure

Location: Icklingham - Three Hills (round barrows)

Further Comments: A local legend said that Cromwell had concealed a wealth of treasure within one of the barrows.


The Church of St. Botolph, Iken, Suffolk.

Marsh Devils

Location: Iken - Church of St. Botolph (original destroyed circa AD869)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Ninth century
Further Comments: St Botolph was said to have battled the strange creatures and demons of the Iken marshes while constructing a place of worship in the ninth century. The entities may have been banished, but Viking raiders laid the site to waste a few years after its construction. In 1977 a piece of stone cross was discovered nearby, thought to be from Botolph's original church.

Large Cat

Location: Ipswich - A12 bypass near Ipswich
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 1996
Further Comments: Part of a rash of sightings of ABCs in and around the Ipswich area during 1996, and that have continued well into the 2000s.

Smoky Man

Location: Ipswich - A12 heading towards Orwell Bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: November 2013
Further Comments: A driver watched a pillar of smoke rise and form the shape of a young man. The driver believed that the figure was someone who had died nearby.
