Powerful Dog

Further Comments: Said to have made its home in the ruins of a big house, this hound left its dwelling at midnight. Most witnesses were said to have been drunk men, although on one occasion several sober gentlemen chased the creature and had it cornered - the dog vanished in front of their eyes.

Black Dog

Further Comments: A shuck is said to walk the area near the castle, while a phantasmic knight stands motionless on the ramparts. Author Wayne Anthony reports that an old lady and a phantom horse have also been reported in the area.

Sitting Hound

Location: Chapel-en-le-Frith (Derbyshire) - Horderns Road area

Further Comments: A phantom dog was once a common sight here, as it sat on the corner of the road near a railway bridge waiting for an owner which never came.

Fiery Eyed Hound

Location: Chapmanslade (Wiltshire) - A36, Black Dog Woods

Further Comments: As the name of the location suggests, this wooded area is home to a black dog whose eyes glow as red as hot coals. To see him means death within the year. One story says the hound once belonged to a man killed in a duel; the dog tore out the throat of the surviving fighter.

Great Dane

Further Comments: This dog leapt out in front of an incoming car - the driver thought he hit the creature but could not find any evidence of an accident when he stopped.

Grave Dog

Location: Chideock (Dorset) - Road from Morcombelake, & local graveyard
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: 1900s?
Further Comments: This creature followed a couple of witnesses as they walked home from a nearby village. The creature turned away near the graveyard, and they watched it disappear next to a gravestone. A phantom priest is also said to haunt the same area.

Barrow Dog

Location: Chilham (Kent) - Pilgrim's Way, opposite the Woolpack Inn

Further Comments: A witness watched this large black creature bounding towards the barrow, where it promptly disappeared.

Wild Edric

Location: Church Stretton (Shropshire) - Hills around the town

Further Comments: The large hound with eyes that glow red like hot coals is said to be a manifestation of Wild Edric, local hero and protector of Britain.

Mean Old Dog

Location: Clachtoll (Highland) - Main road through village

Further Comments: This phantom hound is said to harass those using the road late at night. It can easily be recognised by its pair of horns.

Big Eyed Dog

Location: Clane (County Kildare) - Clongowes Wood College

Further Comments: The phantom hound with glowing eyes which walked the corridors at night was said by students to be the manifestation of a hanged murderer. The building was also once witness to a Crisis Manifestation, when the ghost of a Marshall appeared to two sisters - they identified him as their brother, who, it was later discovered, was killed in action at the time of the visitation.

Earless Dog

Further Comments: The ghostly, earless dog that haunted this area was supposed to emerge from the castle's moat at night before wandering off to hunt rabbits.

Black Dog

Location: Clee Hill (Shropshire) - Kremlin Inn

Further Comments: The outside of this public house is said to be haunted by a ghostly black dog. The inn took the name 'Kremlin' after people reported hearing Russian voices and music emerge from the jukebox during the Cold War.

Snapping Dog

Location: Clonakilty (County Cork) - Road east of town

Further Comments: Three men travelling along this road found themselves followed by a hound which stayed a reasonable distance before vanishing at a roadside cross. When one man headed away from the other two, the hound appeared again, chasing and nipping at the man. After sharing their experience with a priest, the area was blessed and the dog never returned.

Tchen Bodu

Further Comments: This black hound, known locally as tchen Bodu, is seen as a death omen for either the witness or someone close to them.

Wide-Eyed Dog

Location: Coate (Wiltshire) - Roadside
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Circa 1938
Further Comments: A large dog with saucer sized eyes would sit on the roadside. No one would see it move (it would just vanish from view), although if stones were thrown at the creature, the eyes would grow even larger. It once appeared to one man who discovered the time of the sighting matched the time that his father died. The same area is also haunted by a phantom white donkey.

Barghest

Location: Cock Mill (North Yorkshire) - General area

Further Comments: A hound-like creature with eyes as large as saucers was once said to lurk in this area, which was once considered a place of gambling and other morally dubious activities.

Black Dog

Location: Cold Knap (South Glamorgan) - Beach, between cave and mini golf course
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: February 1997, 23:00 (approximately) and September 2013 around midnight
Further Comments: This witness, who would often sit on the pebbles with their two dogs, watched another dog, black in colour, move silently across the beach some fifty metres away. The witness's curiosity was raised by the fact that despite the rocks and stones underfoot, the hound moved smoothly, and their own dogs remained oblivious to the strange canine. Sixteen years later the same witness reported their second paranormal event on the beach - a nebulous black cloud which formed around their feet. After tolerating the cloud for several minutes, the witness left the area.

Dog of Justice

Further Comments: This shuck appeared to two men who had just committed a murder, chasing them back to the village from where they were trying to escape. The creature vanished once they were arrested.

Headless Hound

Further Comments: The black shuck which walks this area is instantly recognisable as the creature is missing a head.

Screaming

Location: Colwinston (South Glamorgan) - Pwyllywrach Manor

Further Comments: Cries and screams can be heard from a man torn into small pieces by hell hounds. The echoes can be heard once a year.

Small Black Dog

Location: Combs (Derbyshire) - Road between Combs and Cockyard

Date / Time: Early twentieth century?
Further Comments: Smaller than the average shuck, this phantom dog was reported to silently follow people down a hill before vanishing.

Pongay

Location: Coppull (Lancashire) - Darkland Bridge and surrounding area

Further Comments: Part dog and part ghost, Pongay was once often blamed for accidents and mishaps in the area.

Escort

Location: Cottingham (Northamptonshire) - Old Corby Road area

Further Comments: This shuck was regarded as the traveller's friend, walking alongside anyone traversing the road on their lonesome. It would vanish into thin air if touched.

Great Shaggy Beast

Location: Coventry (West Midlands) - Whitmore Park

Further Comments: Standing almost six feet tall, this black dog made itself known to a couple of water workers along Watery Lane (who wisely ran away). Prior to this, the creature had appeared in the middle of the eighteenth century and said to denote a death in the witness's family.
