Broken Staff

Location: Humshaugh (Northumberland) - Unidentified farmer's field
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A farmer ploughing the field heard a fairy cry 'I've broken my staff!'. The farmer offered to fix the staff, and having done so, found bread and butter left out for him the following day.

Hob Headless

Location: Hurworth-on-Teas (Durham) - Road between village and Neasham
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Circa Nineteenth century
Further Comments: This brownie-related entity lived along the road until exorcised. He was cast under a stone where he had to remain for ninety-nine years and a day. It was said if anyone sat on the stone, they would never be able to stand again. Needless to say, the ninety-nine years has now expired but the entity appears still to be quiet.

Jeanie

Location: Hutton Mulgrave (North Yorkshire) - Mulgrave Woods
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A farmer was dared to approach the home of the fairy known as Jeanie. Sitting upon his horse, the farmer called out to her. Somewhat displeased at the interruption, she called back and chased him away. As the farmer crossed a stream to safety, she cut his horse in two.

Hound Eater

Location: Hynish, Tiree (Argyll and Bute) - General area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Renowned for its dislike of canines (it is blamed for tearing apart stray local hounds), this Cu Sith (sometimes described as a human-wolf hybrid for dramatic effect) has been seen during both day and night.

Agile Green Folk

Location: Ilkley (West Yorkshire) - Area near the well
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: 1815
Further Comments: Described as fast moving little folk in green, the fairies that lived in this area were once found in the single village bath - they scarpered when discovered.

Red Capped Fairies

Location: Inchigeela (County Cork) - Close to a stream?
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A group of fairies dancing around in the moonlight ran away after being told they should talk to a priest to have their question of 'will they go to heaven' answered.

Singing

Location: Inchiquin (County Clare) - Cahernanoorane (fort)
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Nineteenth century
Further Comments: Fairy song was said to have been heard coming from this fort.

Lile Hob of Blea Moor

Location: Ingleton (North Yorkshire) - Road between Ingleton and Hawes
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This pixie-like creature would loiter on the roadside and leap upon passing carts to blag a free ride. The Hob vanished when a shepherd stumbled upon three little silver armbands left in a field, one of which he lost and the others he sold.


Tomnahurich Hill, Inverness.

Fiddler in a Timeslip

Location: Inverness (Highland) - Tomnahurich Hill
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: One story told here is of a fiddler who fell asleep on the hill. He awoke in fairyland where he had to play for the queen. After several hours he was permitted to leave and was returned to an area near the River Ness. The fiddler soon discovered that one hundred years had passed since entering the fairy kingdom.

The Call

Location: Iona, Isle of Mull (Argyll and Bute) - General area
Type: Fairy

Further Comments: A strange spell is occasionally cast upon mortals by the fairy folk that causes them to believe they must leave the island, be it by land, sea or death.

Marie Emily Fornario

Location: Iona, Isle of Mull (Argyll and Bute) - Reilig Odhrain
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: 1930s onwards
Further Comments: Ghost lights are seen hovering around the grave of Marie, and her sad figure has been reported moving around moorland in the region.

Fairy Music

Location: Iona, Isle of Mull (Argyll and Bute) - Sithean Mor - Fairy Mound
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: From this grassy knoll sweet music has been heard by both locals and visitors to the area.

Green Woman

Location: Iona, Isle of Mull (Argyll and Bute) - Unidentified cave on island
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A green-clad fairy woman lived on the island and would be left milk and food by the locals.

Fairy Royals

Location: Ireshope (Durham) - Clint's Crags
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The fairy royal family are supposed to live in a palace hidden here.

Brownie

Location: Isle of Insh (Argyll and Bute) - General area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A brownie took a liking to the MacDougalls and, in return for a small amount of warm milk which is left for him in a hollow in a cave, would keep an eye on the cattle which grazed on the island. If his gift were neglected, a cow would be found stranded (or dead) on one of the rocky outcrops.

Fairy Ship

Location: Isle of Muck (Highland) - Unknown beach
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: 1910?
Further Comments: Two children on the beach suddenly found a boy dressed in green standing beside them. The boy pointed to his ship a few feet from shore, which contained a small girl and a tiny dog. After the green people shared some small biscuits, they set sail, saying that others of their kind were coming.

Further Comments: The little people on this island are renowned for only having one nostril.

Fairy Hill

Location: Isle of Mull (Argyll and Bute) - Small hill near Duart Castle
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: It was said that if any milk was spilt close to the hill, the fairies reap the benefit.

Gruagach

Location: Isle of Skye (Highland) - Small island east of Skye, was known as Troda?
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Pre twentieth century
Further Comments: Not much is known about the hairy fairy that once made its home on this island

Dancing Dwarfs

Location: Kenchester (Hereford & Worcester) - Roman Ruins
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The little people here made their homes in the Roman ruins scattered around.

Fairy Music

Location: Kennavarra, Tiree (Argyll and Bute) - Kennavarra Hill
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Two children, a sister and brother, were hunting for birds in the snow. Music that emerged from deep underground terrified the pair; they ran home, the girl losing her shoes in her haste to escape.

Midnight Visitors

Location: Kenovay, Tiree (Argyll and Bute) - Farm
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A witness watched as a group of fairies entered this farmhouse at midnight. The fairies silently glided around a room and left again.

Changeling

Location: Kerrera (Argyll and Bute) - Gylen Castle
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A fairy changeling took up residence in Gylen Castle, escaping into the sea when identified by an Irish visitor.

Clothes Washing

Location: Kettleness (North Yorkshire) - Claymore Well
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Circa 1650
Further Comments: Reports of fairies frequenting this area date from the seventeenth century, with three men and one woman claiming to have stumbled upon the fairies making merry at midnight. One twentieth century author wrote that the little folk washed their clothes at the site, their wooden rollers making so much noise that they could be heard a mile away.

Shining Cup

Location: Kilchoan (Highland) - Mingary Castle
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The castle was home to a shining cup, stolen from a fairy party by a serving boy. The cup would fill with whatever liquid the bearer wished. The magical item was lost after a boat sunk while carrying it.
