Further Comments: This old man tragically lost his son, and now walks the road with his dog, looking for new friends.

Further Comments: The small lane leading to the local churchyard is reputedly home to a phantom hound - the creature has been spotted running along the lane. It is thought that the location that the hound appears will soon be the site of a crime. A ghostly donkey seen here may be the same entity. The same area is also haunted by a haunted coach as it travels towards Bungay Castle.

Further Comments: This lane is said to be haunted by a bull, containing the soul of the Jew who hanged himself on a tree along the road.

Further Comments: This shop is said to be haunted by a woman in black, named as Rose, who sits in a rocking chair with a ginger cat in her lap.

Further Comments: This was (briefly) the childhood home to E D Walker, a former mayor of Darlington. The mayor reported several ghostly encounters by his family, including the sound of pistol shots, a bed lifting and being dropped three times in quick succession, and invisible dogs fighting just outside the building. Walker's brother and a visiting joiner fled the site after watching a white man appear in a room and vanish a few moments later. A few years after the family moved out, a skeleton was discovered under the kitchen.

Further Comments: A grey cat has been seen in the building on several occasions, running down a corridor, only to disappear into a wall in the bathroom. Old Ruffy is the affectionate name given to the pub poltergeist who once had a habit of breaking glasses.

Further Comments: The monk that is said to appear at these ruins once a year has been rarely seen since the 1960s. A large chest of gold is also said to be buried in the area, watched over by a raven (or the monk, depending on the story source).

Further Comments: A couple of witnesses watched a man dressed in a cloak float into the room, being chased by a woman dressed in Tudor clothing. It is unclear whether the female spirit is the same as the woman in grey who has been seen in other areas of the estate, often with a small brown dog.

Further Comments: Invisible, large and friendly, this ghost cat would freak people out as it rubbed itself on their legs, trying to show affection.

Further Comments: A former landlord's cat which had died several years previous could be heard walking up and down on the keys of a piano.

Further Comments: While driving by the entrance of the hall, a police inspector spotted a horse being led by a lady with a bonnet and old fashioned clothing. He turned his car around for a second look, but both the animal and woman had vanished.

Further Comments: Not seen for many years now, the man in grey is thought to have been a previous manager that died in a fire on site. His dog also died in the blaze and has been seen running about in the corridors.

Further Comments: A phantom man upon a shaggy horse was once said to haunt this hill, manifesting to other riders and causing their mounts to bolt.

Further Comments: Amanda Hyde, writing for the Times Online, documented her less than convincing experiences during a ghost hunt on the site, during which she encountered Dennis (via a medium) and communicated with Edward using a glass. More convincing is the encounter a chef reported in 1998. He reported seeing a shadow the size and shape of a large dog in the kitchen a few minutes before feeling a nip on his right thigh. He cried out, three nearby staff asking what was wrong, although they were disbelieving when he told them what he had seen and felt. The following day a heavily bruised bite mark appeared on his leg.

Further Comments: A pair of St Bernard dogs were spotted by a man walking his own dogs. Concerned that their owner was nowhere in sight, the witness closely followed them around a corner, where they vanished. The man later found out that disappeared at the rear of the house where they once lived, even though the alleyway leading to the house had been closed off.

Further Comments: This village was the haunt for several years of a large phantom pig, said to contain the spirit of a local farmer who took his own life. A handful of people have also reported other ghostly creatures, including a sheep and a flying 'white thing'.

Further Comments: A large phantom hog is said to haunt this country lane, sometimes accompanied by a rolling barrel.

Further Comments: Local legend says this ghost is a serving girl whose child was killed when the lord of the manor threw it from an attic window. A pair of disembodied hands have been reported floating around the building, also said to belong to the former servant, while on the odd occasion, a male figure in spurs has been observed. A visitor to the manor in 1995 felt a strong tap on her shoulder. Expecting it to be her boyfriend, she turned, but was alone in the room. There are several other local legends about the manor, including hauntings by a horse and carriage, a phantom woman, and ghostly birds.
