Big Cat Sightings and Encounters

Cat with Long Tail

Location: Shap (Cumbria) - M6 motorway near to junction 39
Type: ABC
Date / Time: August 2001
Further Comments: Several Alien Big Cat sightings have been reported along this stretch of motorway. The ABC reported in this instance was described as possessing a big head and a very long tail.

Large Cat

Location: Sheffield (South Yorkshire) - Field near Wales Bar Petrol Station, now a golf course
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 1987 or 1988
Further Comments: While crossing a field of sheep, a group of friends watched a large, cat-shaped creature amongst the sheep. The creature spotted the group and crouched, resulting in the friends fleeing the area.

Big Cat

Location: Shelley (Suffolk) - Exact location not known
Type: ABC
Date / Time: March 1996
Further Comments: This out of place feline stood around 350 metres from observers.

Line Lion

Location: Shepley (South Yorkshire) - Railway Line
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 06 November 2011, around 15:30h
Further Comments: Trains were delayed for around two hours after police received a report of a lion (and possibly a cub) on the rail tracks at Shepley. After searching the area with twelve officers and a helicopter, nothing was found, and rail travel resumed.

Fawn Coloured Cat

Location: Shingle Street (Suffolk) - Unnamed country lane
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 23 March 2008
Further Comments: Prison Officer Heidi Hawley was driving to work when what she mistook for an Alsatian dog ran out in front of her. Believing it to have been an escaped pet, Heidi stopped her car to investigate further; she climbed up an embankment to follow the 'dog', only to realise it was a large fawn coloured cat with green eyes. The cat paused to look at her before running off.

Black Panther

Location: Shrewsbury (Shropshire) - Field behind Travelodge at Bayston Hill
Type: ABC
Date / Time: August 2003
Further Comments: Police land and air units were called out to investigate the reports of a long black cat seen sitting in the field, though a search failed to find the creature.

Hound-Sized Cat

Location: Skelwith Bridge (Cumbria) - Road between Skelwith Bridge and Ambleside
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 2008
Further Comments: A witness spotted a grey-coloured creature walking up a small hill with trees on the top. The animal looked about the size of a large dog; it had a greyhound-like head with a long muzzle, but the body was much more like that of a big cat, complete with a long, thick tail.

Cat Kill

Location: Snape (Suffolk) - Tunstall to Snape Road

Further Comments: Reported to The Big Cats of Suffolk website, a muntjac carcass found here featured a bite to the neck, with other cat spoor discovered nearby.

Large Cat

Location: Spixworth (Norfolk) - Field, exact location not known
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 1998
Further Comments: A witness who spotted a large black cat on the edge of a field estimated the sitting creature to be around one metre in height.

Leaping Cat

Location: Spreyton (Devon) - Private garden
Type: ABC
Date / Time: Spring 2006
Further Comments: Witness Martin Heath reported seeing a large cat, dark brindle in colour, and around the size of an Alsatian with a thirty centimetre long bushy tail. The cat ran across the garden and disappeared by leaping into a tree.

Location: Sproughton (Suffolk) - Road between village and Chantry Park

Further Comments: The Big Cats of Suffolk website reported that one witness watched a large black cat cross the road.


RAF St Mawgan, Cornwall.

Large Black Puma

Location: St Mawgan (Cornwall) - RAF St Mawgan
Type: ABC
Date / Time: April 2004
Further Comments: Military surveillance equipment was set up around the airbase following several reports of a large black cat seen on the site. A spokesperson said that the RAF would make 'every possible attempt to ensure it is captured humanely'. Even though a professional tracker was called in, the creature was never caught.

Lion or Teddy Bear?

Location: St Osyth (Essex) - Field off Earls Hall Drive

Date / Time: 26 August 2012
Further Comments: Residents of this village were asked to stay indoors while people at a nearby caravan park were evacuated after the police warned the public that a lion may be on the loose, having been presented with a grainy image of a cat in a field. After police helicopters and armed officers found nothing, the photo was released in the press. The owner of a large domestic cat named Teddy Bear said the 'lion' looked like her pet, which is known to bask in the sun in the same field.

Further Comments: This feline stood about 25 metres from the witness.

Large Black Creature

Location: Storridge (Herefordshire) - Windy Oak area
Type: ABC
Date / Time: Autumn 2003
Further Comments: A large black cat was spotted by two witnesses who were left unnerved as it moved around a mound and disappeared over the top.

Black Cat

Location: Strood (Kent) - General area
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: One witness observed a large black cat in an alleyway eating something, while a teenage girl camping in a garden peered out after hearing a noise and spotted green eyes looking at her. One theory is that the creature lived in woodland near Higham.

Roe Deer Kill

Location: Stroud (Gloucestershire) - Woodchester Park
Type: ABC
Date / Time: January 2012 (corpse found), and throughout 2012
Further Comments: The corpse of a roe deer discovered by a member of the public had wounds similar to animals killed by big cats. The National Trust, who own the land, said they were carrying out tests on the body - these later came back with only deer and fox DNA detected. Video footage was also captured of the 'Stroud Valleys Wildcat' a couple of years prior to this attack, although was only analysed in 2012, with opinions differing to whether the creature was an ABC or just a large domestic cat.

Large Black Cat

Location: Sudbury (Suffolk) - Henny Road
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 28 September 2010, 05:30h
Further Comments: While driving home this witness watched a large black cat, 'as large as a Boxer dog', run from out of a hedge into the car headlights. The creature continued to run along the road for a short distance before vanishing into another hedge.

Black Cat

Location: Taynuilt (Argyll and Bute) - Field in the area
Type: ABC
Date / Time: Circa 2018
Further Comments: Seen sitting in a field, this large black cat with a very long tail sat in profile to the witness. The creature slunk into the bushes and, despite the witness waiting a while, never reemerged.

Black Puma

Location: Telford (Shropshire) - Areas including Blockleys Brickmaker's and Donnington Wood
Type: ABC
Date / Time: September 1999 (Blockleys), 1992 (Donnington Wood)
Further Comments: Clear CCTV footage taken at Blockleys showed a large (around two meters in length) black cat stalking the neighbourhood. The RSPCA stated the creature was indeed a puma. Another witness spotted the creature in woodland at the bottom of their garden.

Yellow Eyed Cat

Location: Telford (Shropshire) - Silkin Way

Date / Time: Early 2011
Further Comments: After hearing rustling in nearby bushes, a walker approached closer only to hear loud cat-like screeching. As they backed away, a large black cat with yellow eyes was spotted.

Fox Savior

Location: Tetbury (Gloucestershire) - Outskirts of the town
Type: ABC
Date / Time: November 2020
Further Comments: A woman walking her dogs encountered a fox being stalked by a large cat. The dogs and owner disturbed the cat which eventually disappeared off, leaving the (no doubt very relieved) fox to walk alongside the woman for safety for a few minutes after the encounter.


Thetford Forest, Norfolk.

Black Cat with Glowing Eyes

Location: Thetford (Norfolk) - Wooded areas
Type: ABC
Date / Time: April 1985, 2000s, September 2021
Further Comments: A large cat with eyes that glowed red was reported in the forest in 1985. More recently, Big Cats of Suffolk website reports there have been sightings of large cats in the area for at least thirty years, most recently a large black cat, built like a lynx, in 2021.

Mountain Lion

Location: Thirlmere (Cumbria) - Forest
Type: ABC
Date / Time: August 2018
Further Comments: A Mountain Leader, supervising a group of teenagers on a DofE Gold expedition, cut through the forest to meet up with them. The leader reached a fifty foot (fifteen metre) clearing and on the other side stood a tan coloured Mountain Lion. Man and cat stood and stared at each other for around a minute before the lion turned and slowly walked into the trees. The lion was headed in the direction the leader wanted to go in, so he retraced his steps and walked around the forest instead.

Green Eyes

Location: Thompson (Norfolk) - Unstated road in the area
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 2004, around midnight
Further Comments: A witness returning home by car spotted a large cat just a few metres away from a deer. He stated that he saw the perfect side profile of the creature just before it disappeared into the hedge: a long sleek body with a long tail drooping to the ground and then hooking upwards.
