Nottingham Ghosts, Folklore and Forteana

Young Girl

Location: Nottingham - St. Matthias Church and St. Matthias Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The churchyard is said to be haunted by a young girl and possibly the ghost of an unknown man. The man may also haunt the road - there are reports of both a young male ghost and the spirit of an older man who have been observed here.

Screaming Woman

Location: Nottingham - Stonebridge Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s?
Further Comments: Phantom sounds appear to be quite at home along Stonebridge Road - the sound of a factory siren is still heard, even though the building no longer stands, and a woman can be heard screaming in the early hours of the morning. A phantom man, however, has been seen in the area, though there is no description of what he looks like.

Giant Spider

Location: Nottingham - Stonebridge Road, close to site of Wrights & Dobson factory (no longer standing)
Type: Cryptozoology

Further Comments: A local librarian driving along Stonebridge Road at night caught sight of a giant spider. The creature was over sixty centimetres at the legs with a body the size of a dinner plate. The spider crawled across the road and disappeared into a disused factory, leaving the witness in shock.

Monk

Location: Nottingham - Tequila's (no longer open)
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The site is said to be haunted by a monk and a Cavalier, though it is unknown whether a particular event connects them. A few staff reported feeling something touch them late at night.

Lady in Black

Location: Nottingham - The Adam's Building, now part of New College Nottingham
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1960s onwards
Further Comments: This former factory is said to be home to a phantom elderly woman in black clothing who walks the upper floors.

Journalist

Location: Nottingham - The Works Nightclub
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: The nightclub was built on the site from where the Nottingham Evening Post once operated. The club was said to contain a friendly but mischievous spirit. The case was investigated by East Midlands Ghost Investigation Group, who discovered the entity was a former journalist.

Clanks of the Carriage

Location: Nottingham - Thorneywood Station (no longer operational) and tunnel (now bricked up)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1960s, 1970s
Further Comments: Sounds of old steam engines, and the clanking of carriages were heard around this former station, even though the last train to pass through was in 1951. The tunnel was said to be haunted by the sounds of footsteps that crunched on the gravel, and some say that a ghostly train still travels through it.

Man in Green Jacket

Location: Nottingham - Trent Bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1960s onwards
Further Comments: The ghost of a man in a green jacket has been spotted looking over the edge of the bridge before fading from view, leading some to speculate he was a suicide victim. A transparent jogger has also been spotted running over the bridge, and phantom voices heard by people crossing alone. Some have reported seeing people leap into the waters under the bridge, but they vanish before hitting the water, and finally a one-man canoe has been seen just before passing under the bridge, but it suddenly vanishes.

Cat

Location: Nottingham - Unknown house
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Early 1970s
Further Comments: The poltergeist activity, blamed on a phantom cat, which took to haunting this unidentified home drove the occupants to the police station in the early hours of the morning. Two police officers were sent to investigate, and although the officers recorded a funny smell and intense cold, they did not experience any otherworldly activity.

Vanishing Man

Location: Nottingham - Victoria Shopping Centre
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 1970s and Spring 2005
Further Comments: During the 1970s, two workers at the bus station spotted a man who they thought looked a little strange. He walked away and one worker followed, only to realise that he had vanished - there had not been enough time for the figure to have run away, and nowhere for him to hide. In spring 2005 a mother and daughter entered an empty lift; during their brief journey, they both spotted a man standing just behind the daughter.

Salamanderesque

Location: Nottingham - West Lake, Colwick Country Park
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1970s onwards
Further Comments: Cryptozoologist Adam Bird reported fishermen believed a large creature to reside in the lake, around fifteen feet (4.5 metres) in length and resembling a salamander.

Banished

Location: Nottingham - Wilford Ferry Inn
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1982
Further Comments: This inn was exorcised in 1982 to remove a troublesome poltergeist.

Man in Blue

Location: Nottingham - Wilford Toll Bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1930s onwards
Further Comments: A gentleman wearing a blue suit has been seen on the bridge and is thought to be the ghost of a former toll collector. A hooded figure is said to haunt under the bridge.

Lady Middleton

Location: Nottingham - Wollaton Hall, room 19
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Lady Middleton was paralysed after a fall and spent the rest of her life in the room that she now haunts.

Sixty Gnomes in Cars

Location: Nottingham - Wollaton Park, swampy area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: September 1979
Further Comments: Appearing to several children, these friendly gnomes sat two per car and playfully chased the children around the park. The wee fellows looked 'like Noddy', but with white beards. The cars moved without sound.

Vanishing Man

Location: Nottingham - Woodhouse Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 05 March 2018, morning
Further Comments: While drinking a cup of tea with a colleague, a witness watched as a man crossed Woodhouse Street, heading in the direction of St Matthias Church. The man reached the metal fence just before the church and then just vanished into thin air. The witness was left shocked, as the man looked solid, like a real person, but there was nowhere he could have gone.

Voices

Location: Nottingham - Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem public house
Type: Curse
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Probably the oldest public house in England, the building is home to spectral voices and other phantom noises. A model galleon, thick with dust, hangs from the ceiling and is said to be cursed - anyone who touches it dies within twelve months.
