Tailless Tiger

Location: Fort William - Glen Nevis

Further Comments: Two witnesses running in the area observed a three metre long cat drinking from the river. One of the witnesses said the creature looked like a tailless tiger with white eyes but no pupils. The creature ran off into a nearby field when it spotted the runners. A few days later local papers reported the deaths of several local sheep in the same field where the creature had run.

Edith

Location: Fort William - West Highland Museum

Date / Time: 1997
Further Comments: Edith MacGregor, once a curator, has been heard typing away in one of the rooms upstairs though she died back in the sixties. No typewriters can be found in the building; all have been replaced by PCs.

General Mischief

Location: Foyers - Boleskin (or Boleskine) House, destroyed by arson attacks in 2019
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid / late twentieth century
Further Comments: One time home of Aleister Crowley, his immoral influence is said to continue to lurk here, taking the form of flashing lights, shattering windows and a moving chair. It was also reported that a decapitated head could be heard rolling down a set of stairs.

Water Cow

Location: Gairloch - Loch na Beiste
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1840
Further Comments: To kill the water cow, said to be the size of an upturned boat, the landowner tried to drain the loch. When this failed, he poured quicklime into the water to poison the creature.

Giant Grey Man

Location: Garve - A835 to Ullapool
Type: Other
Date / Time: November 2002
Further Comments: A driver and his passenger both spotted what they thought to be a large grey boulder on the roadside. The boulder suddenly unfurled to form a tall grey man-shaped creature, between eight and ten feet (2.4 - 3 metres) tall. The figure seemed to be clothed but no facial features could be seen. The sighting only lasted for one or two seconds as the car drove past, and the driver travelled home as fast as possible,

Margot

Location: Garve - Former Victorian hunting lodge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: June / July 1981
Further Comments: A worker at this former hotel reported that screaming and banging could be heard at night. The ghost of Margot was blamed, a scullery maid said to have perished in a fire during the nineteenth century.

Former Waitress

Location: Garve - Hotel, exact details unknown
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This former worker killed herself after being victimised by her boss. For many years after the event, bells would ring without reason throughout the building.

Climber

Location: Glen Coe - Aonach Eagach
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1997
Further Comments: Mid-afternoon on a clear day, a climber descending the Clachaig Gully path spotted and heard a figure in yellow kit climb over a slight brow just ahead of him. When the climber reached the point, the figure had vanished.

Old Maid

Location: Glen Duror - Achnadarroch House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This old woman, dressed in either grey, green, or black, is regarded as a protector of the estate. The spook is said to move at a speed unbefitting for such an old lady.

Fachan

Location: Glen Etive - General area
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown (Fachan), late eighteenth century (MacChallum)
Further Comments: This mythical creature has set up home in Etive, though it is said to travel for miles around the area of the Glen. It is described as possessing only one leg, a single hand which protrudes from the middle of its chest, and a solitary eye in the centre of the head. The famed hunter MacChallum a Chronain made his home in the Glen and was reputedly the last man to understand the fairy ways, using his skill to track a woman who had been kidnapped by the little people.

Goblin

Location: Glen Mor - Glen Gloy
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This pesky little fellow his said to be half as high as the average person, and twice as vindictive to any trespassers caught on 'hips' land.

Battle

Location: Glen Shiel - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A group of men have reportedly been observed fighting with sword and gun.

Bright Ball

Location: Glendale, Isle of Skye - Exact location not known
Type: UFO
Date / Time: Winter mid 1990s
Further Comments: Three men watched a bright glowing ball, between four to five feet in diameter pass a few feet over a house and descend into a field where it disappeared in a small flash of light. The following day they went to check where the ball had vanished but found nothing. One witness said the ball had a white centre but glowed different colours at the edges.

Sharp Turner

Location: Glendale, Isle of Skye - Skies in the area
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 31 December 1998
Further Comments: Two men walking dogs along the shore at dusk spotted a bright star-like light at high altitude. One witness said that he would have passed it off as a military jet, but it made an instant 140 degree turn before disappearing into clouds.

Drowned John

Location: Glenelg - John MacInnes' Loch (six miles out of village)
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Struggling to maintain his farm, John MacInnes was told by a strange being that help would be provided, but certain conditions would have to be followed. John agreed, and a short time later found a stray horse which he used to plough his land. He would bless the creature every evening and it continued to work, but unfortunately on one occasion forgot. The horse picked John up and dashed into the loch, where man and beast vanished forever.

Humped Creature

Location: Glenelg - Waters between town and Lochourn
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 20 August 1872
Further Comments: A party of seven people rowing across the water encountered a black, multi-humped creature. It was described as moving almost erratically, sometimes showing six humps, sometimes only revealing its head. The beast moved quite close to the small boat, startling one of the passengers to such an extent that she refused to make the return journey by sea and walked the thirteen miles journey back home by moonlight over wild tracks. The creature was reported several more times during the same month by other witnesses.

Grey Lady

Location: Glenfinnan - Glenfinnan Inn (now Prince's House Hotel)
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This location sports two phantoms, both said to be harmless. The first is a grey lady who travels along the corridors before promptly vanishing, while the second is that of a highlander with a beard.

Mother Stealing Fairies

Location: Glenmoriston - Dundreggan
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The population of little people located here were constantly trying to kidnap mothers who had recently given birth, to act as nannies for their own fairy children.

Margaret

Location: Golspie - Dunrobin Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Margaret fell to her death from the castle tower, trying to escape to secretly meet her lover. She can be heard crying in the area. Another ghost takes the form of a man, seen on the staircase in the older part of the building.

Yellow Monster

Location: Golspie - Sea of Dunrobin coastline
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Early 1870s
Further Comments: Several witnesses reported seeing a long necked sea monster along this coastline. It was estimated to be between twelve and fifteen metres in length, and brown and yellow in colour.

Descending Light

Location: Gruinard Bay - Skies in the air
Type: UFO
Date / Time: Early twentieth century
Further Comments: A strange light would be observed falling from the sky and head towards a large rock where it would vanish. A witness near the light said it made a strange noise.

Lady of Ardvreck

Location: Inchnadamph - Ardvreck Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This lady, famed for her meddling and interfering, has found it difficult to give up her former position and remains earthbound. It is unclear whether she is the same entity as the tall, lean ghost observed from a distance, or if this figure is male. A legend says that the construction of the castle was assisted by the Devil.

Four Metre Eel

Location: Inchnadamph - River in the area
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: November 2003
Further Comments: This oversized eel (or eel-like creature) was seen swimming in the river - locals have claimed the creature has been around for the last ten years or so, both here and by Loch Assynt.

Gold Dorothy

Location: Inshore - Unknown stone in the area
Type: Other
Date / Time: Mid nineteenth century
Further Comments: A woman named Dorothy from Durness had a dream about discovering gold under a stone. She dug in the area but found nothing. Twelve months later she had the same dream, and taking a friend, dug at the same spot again. They found nothing. Another twelve months later, the same dream, and she dug a third time. She found nothing, but she did gain the nickname Gold Dorothy. She never dreamed about the treasure again.

King Duncan

Location: Inverness - Area outside Inverness Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: King Duncan's ghost is said to walk outside this castle, along the banks of the River Ness.
