More of More Hall

Further Comments: When a fire breathing dragon visited his area, More of More Hall was called upon to slay the creature. As protection, More's armour was covered with fifteen centimetre long spikes. The fight between man and monster dragged on for two days and one night, before More had the opportunity to kick a spiked boot into the dragon's bottom (or mouth), which killed it.

Soldier Inspecting

Further Comments: When this building was a general hospital, it was believed that a Roman Soldier would appear at night and inspect every new admission as they slept.

Old Woman

Location: West Melton - Private residences, Albert Road (buildings since redeveloped?)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: December 1976 - February 1977
Further Comments: One family moved away from their home after it was claimed a ghostly old woman knocked a five-year-old child out of their chair. Objects were also moved around or disappeared, and one occupant said they could smell decay and rot. The next-door neighbour had previously moved away; although they did not say what they had experienced, it was described as 'worse at night'.

The Dragon of Wantley

Location: Wharncliffe Crags - Exact location not known

Further Comments: This dragon made a nuisance of itself until the local hero Moore of Moore Hall donned a suit of spiked armour and kicked the creature between the legs. The dragon left the area with tears in its eyes.

Black Bird

Location: Whirlow - Lane near Whirlow Hall (no longer standing)

Further Comments: A member of the family which owned Whirlow Hall was said to haunt the lane, taking the form for a black bird with a white tail (or wings). It was capable of paralysing people; in one instance the entity froze the rider of a mule in the air as his mount continued walking along oblivious to its master's predicament.

Woman in White

Location: Wombwell - Low Valley Arms public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Roger Froggatt, the landlord of this pub, was left terrified after encountering a phantom lady dressed in white in the ladies' toilet after investigating what he believed was a break in during the early hours of the morning. He described the figure as an elderly woman with her cheek and jaw structure missing.

Further Comments: A large black cat was spotted as it darted across the road in front of a car.

Further Comments: This phantom woman was seen walking around the area waving her arms above her head.

Lord Wharncliffe

Location: Wortley - Carlton House

Further Comments: The first Lord Wharncliffe was said to haunt this building, along with several other unidentified ghosts.
