Dame Anne Wroughton

Location: Wilcot - General area

Further Comments: Anne's husband believed her to be having an affair and threw her out of their home - she froze to death in the winter snow a few hours later. Her husband was wrong about her infidelity, and now Anne's ghost walks forlornly through the village.

Hanged Monk

Location: Wilcot - Wilcot Manor

Further Comments: Once a monastery, the building is now haunted by a monk who hanged himself on the site after he was told he had to leave.

Panting Dog

Location: Wilton - Field known locally as Severals (path of old Roman road)
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Early twentieth century
Further Comments: The phantom hound found here would be completely silent, though the dog's panting gives away its location. The Roman road is also haunted by a woman in black, said to move so quickly that she is impossible to catch.

Coach

Location: Winsley - Converted coach house at Winsley Manor

Further Comments: It was said that horse and carriage could sometimes be heard outside this coach house, even though they could never be seen.

Blue Lady

Location: Winterbourne Dauntsey - Manor House

Further Comments: A painting of a blue woman (who died after being banished from the property) that hanged in the manor house was thought to have been cursed, with the destruction of the property a promised result of any movement of the work.

Sounds of Smashing

Location: Winterbourne Gunner - Sergeants' Mess

Further Comments: This place would generate a feeling of terrible unease with staff, and the sound of smashing glasses would be heard in the kitchen, although nothing would be found broken.

Golden Coffin

Further Comments: Another location said to contain a coffin made of gold, though its location is not really known (nor, for that matter, its existence).

Cavalier

Location: Woodborough - Road between village and Allington

Further Comments: Returning home one night, a driver encountered a man wearing Cavalier-style clothing. The figure was accompanied by a large black dog. The driver sped away, rather than investigate further.

Headless Horses

Location: Woodmanton - Location known as Patty's Bottom

Further Comments: Rumoured to be a battleground between Britons and Romans, the sounds of battle, accompanied by the sight of headless horses, have been reported. The battle was said to be so intense, the valley filled with blood.

Black Dog

Location: Wootton Bassett - Black Dog Road

Further Comments: Unsurprisingly, it is a black dog that haunts the road which has taken its name. It is believed to only reveal itself to those soon to die.

Dashing Figure

Further Comments: The occupants of a car watched as a figure dashed across the road and vanish near a field. The weather was clear and no other traffic around.

Witch

Location: Wootton Rivers - Cottage at Goblin's Hold (may no longer be standing)

Further Comments: A cottage which once stood here was said to be home to a witch. She was said to have been seen peering from the window after she had died.

Suicide

Location: Wootton Rivers - Crossroad in the area

Further Comments: Horses were said to be startled at the location where a suicide was buried. The phantom was said to be heard on a nightly basis; on the hour of his death, ghostly swinging could be heard.

Headless Man

Location: Wootton Rivers - Flitwick

Further Comments: This headless ghost disappeared soon after a decapitated skeleton was discovered in the wall of the farmhouse and laid to rest.

Golden Table

Location: Wootton Rivers? - Barrow near a farm?

Further Comments: A small team of treasure hunters were searching for a golden table, fabled to have been buried in the area. One man found the top of the table on the barrow, but as he called out to his friends, it sank beneath the ground and could not be rediscovered.

Shadows at the Bar

Location: Wroughton - Black Horse public house (now Check Inn)

Further Comments: Staff reported seeing shadowy people at the bar, but as they moved towards the area, the figures would vanish. A visiting clairvoyant said that she could see a man in a powered wig writing poetry using a quill.

Solitary Figure

Location: Wroughton - St John the Baptist and St Helen church

Further Comments: A shadowy figure has been seen standing by a yew tree in this churchyard. It is unclear whether the ghost is that of a man who hanged himself from the tree or a phantom woman. Either way, a local myth says the best way to encounter the phantom is to run around the tree thirteen times anti-clockwise.

Short Lady

Location: Yatesbury - Crossroads

Date / Time: September or October 2012
Further Comments: Approaching the crossroads, a driver watched a white hazy woman wearing 'nun like' clothing step out of bushes and cross the road. As the car approached her, the woman stopped in the middle of the road, and turned and looked at the driver before vanishing. The driver said she stood around four foot seven inches tall and wearing pre-twentieth century clothing.

Bomber

Further Comments: A ghostly bomber, covered in flames, is said to land on this airfield once a year (although the date is not known).

Grey Lady

Further Comments: The grey lady is thought to have been murdered and her body concealed in the woods. The astral woman now descends the staircase, walks out of the house and towards the place where her body was hidden.
