Dennis

Further Comments: Amanda Hyde, writing for the Times Online, documented her less than convincing experiences during a ghost hunt on the site, during which she encountered Dennis (via a medium) and communicated with Edward using a glass. More convincing is the encounter a chef reported in 1998. He reported seeing a shadow the size and shape of a large dog in the kitchen a few minutes before feeling a nip on his right thigh. He cried out, three nearby staff asking what was wrong, although they were disbelieving when he told them what he had seen and felt. The following day a heavily bruised bite mark appeared on his leg.

Overnight Construction

Further Comments: The giant Moll Walbee, known also as Maud de Breos, built this castle in a single night!

Movement

Location: Hay-on-Wye - Old Black Lion
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A guest staying at the inn once reported hearing someone moving around in an adjacent room, only to find they had been the only person there for the night. The site is occasionally used by ghost hunting teams.

Woman

Location: Knighton - George and Dragon Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre-2005
Further Comments: Haunted by the spirit of a woman who lost her baby, the paranormal activity here decreased after a new owner took over the establishment.

Glowing Ball

Location: Llanddetty - Tafe Fechan Chapel (no longer standing, likely to be under Pontsticill Reservoir)
Type: Other
Date / Time: Pre-early 1800s
Further Comments: Three witnesses watched a ball of glowing light grow to the size of the church tower before reducing in volume to little more than a pin prick. This expansion and contraction occurred several times before vanishing.

Returned Rock

Location: Llandrindod - Cwmhir Abbey

Further Comments: A small piece of rock was returned by an Australian tourist to the abbey, with the man claiming he had suffered a run of bad luck since removing it.

Cloaked Figure

Location: Llandrindod Wells - Bridge near Disserth church

Further Comments: A figure wearing a cloak with hood was spotted by a driver and his passenger while driving over the bridge.

Street Urchin

Location: Llandrindod Wells - Laughing Dog Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A previous resident claimed to have experienced furniture moved by an unseen hand, as well as seeing a young boy resembling Dickensian street urchin. Another witness has seen a lady in Victorian dress sat knitting in a rocking chair.

Noose

Location: Llanfihangel - The Skirrid Inn

Further Comments: The inn also doubled as a courthouse before the 1850s, and a place of execution. There have been reports of customers feeling an invisible rope being slipped over their heads before being tightened, and the presence of a woman has also been felt.

Singers

Further Comments: A ghostly choir was said to sing once a year within the cave network.

Dancing Devil

Location: Llangattock - Field north of Llangattock Park

Further Comments: On the eve of Midsummer, the Devil would emerge and spend time dancing with the local fairies around a clump of trees.

Invisible Hands

Location: Llangattock - General area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The local landlord, Richard the Tailor, was said to keep the company of fairies. A hunter who upset Richard found himself whisked away from the village by unseen hands which pushed and pulled the man until he reached Newport. Although exhausted, the invisible force then motivated him to walk the twenty miles back to the village.

Footsteps

Location: Llangattock - Llangattock Park House

Further Comments: A doctor called to the building late at night claimed he heard footsteps walking from the bottom to the top of the house.

The farmer, an abuser and part-time stone

Abuser

Location: Llangattock - Stone known as The Lonely Shepherd (aka Peaky Stone)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 23 June (or Midsummer Eve) (reoccurring)
Further Comments: The stone is said to have once been an abusive farmer who drove his wife to commit suicide in the nearby river. A witch who witnessed the abuse turned the farmer into a stone, permitting him to move one day a year, when he wanders the area calling out his wife's name.

Gravity Hill

Location: Llangattock - Turning off the B4560 between Llangynidr and Garnlydan, heading towards Llangattock
Type: Other
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: This quiet road is another place where a natural optical illusion causes vehicles to appear to roll up the hill rather than down.

Cathedral Bells

Location: Llangorse Lake - General area
Type: Environmental Manifestation
Date / Time: Holy Days (reoccurring)
Further Comments: A cathedral once stood in this spot before it was flooded - the tower bells now ring out on select days of the year.

Fire Starter

Location: Llangunllo - Farm belonging to Edward Roberts, no longer standing
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Pre-twentieth century
Further Comments: The entity which went to work here began by snatching items out of people's hands, before progressing on to smashed crockery. A man who came to read prayers had his bible pulled from his hands and tossed upstairs. After an unspecified period of time, the entity set the building ablaze and razed it to the ground.

Voice

Location: Llangurig - Private residence

Further Comments: As Edward Lloyd lay dying, a disembodied voice could be heard talking in Welsh. The last words anyone heard from the voice were 'there it breaks' and then Edward died.

Wizard Wrapped in Clothing

Location: Llangynidr - Canal path between Llangynidr & Crickhowell

Further Comments: While travelling between these two villages, the Rev Thomas was chased by a ghost wrapped in dirty clothing, with glowing eyes and a gaunt face. This spirit pursued the Reverend to the village of Llangynidr, where it then veered off and headed behind the church. The witness was later told the ghost was that of a local wizard, who had died alone and was buried near where the ghost had disappeared.

Giant Rib

Location: Llangynog - St Melangell's Church, Pennant Melangell

Further Comments: A rather large rib, thought to belong to a mammoth, was once said to belong to a giant or Saint Melangell. The saint was famous for saving a hare from a hunt, and local superstition prevented anyone from hare hunting near the church.

White Lady

Location: Llanidloes - A470, 'Red Bridge' area

Further Comments: This ghostly figure has appeared several times, manifesting in the middle of the road only to pass through incoming traffic. One male driver stated that the female form looked at him with sad eyes as she passed through the bonnet of his car.

Lady Jeffreys

Location: Llanidloes - Pool along the River Severn and bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Lady Jeffreys was said to have haunted Montgomeryshire until banished into a bottle and cast into a pool by the River Severn close to Llanidloes. The story said that she would be free once ivy covered the old bridge, so locals took it upon themselves to trim back the ivy whenever it grew too tall. When the bridge was replaced, a bottle was discovered which contained a small black object which appeared to be trying to escape. The bottle was placed back into the pool.

Angry Gwiber

Location: Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant - Red Pillar or Pillar of the Viper
Type: Dragon
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A dragon killed many local people until they had the idea of covering a large stone with spikes and covering the structure with red cloth. The colour angered the dragon, who attacked the stone until the spikes had mortally wounded it.

Dancing Place of the Goblin

Location: Llanwrin - Tree in woodland near Mathafarn (woodland may no longer exists)

Further Comments: Under a certain yew-tree in the centre of the woodland a fairy circle was known as 'The Dancing Place of the Goblin'. Two lads once took a nap in the circle, and upon awaking, one had vanished. The missing lad reappeared a year later - he was grabbed out of the clutches of dancing goblins and saved.

Llia's Stone

Location: Llethr on the Hoel - Llia Valley

Further Comments: On every morning that the cock crows, this huge monolith walks over to the River Nedd for a quick drink.
