Further Comments: Two brothers owned this mill - one brother placed his sibling in an asylum and gained complete control of the site. The sibling died in the asylum and returned to haunt the mill, the ghost audibly chopping wood throughout the night.

Strange Man

Further Comments: A phantom man wearing either eighteenth or nineteenth century garb appears to announce the death of a local.

Leap or Push?

Location: Monmouth - Watery Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1948 (drowned man), 'postman' unknown
Further Comments: Though nothing exists of the stream that once ran through here, it has not deterred the appearance of a phantom man who drowned in its waters. It is not known whether he took his own life or was pushed. Another ghost was seen by a woman who thought that it was the postman. She tried to catch up to the figure, but seconds before reaching him, he vanished.

Crying Baby

Location: Monmouth - White Hill

Further Comments: A baby was said to have been murdered on the hillside and the body hidden in a bush. The child's cries were reputed to echo around the area.

Blue Woman

Location: Monmouth - Wooded area near the river in Hadnock area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early twentieth century?
Further Comments: Two young people in a group of three out after midnight spotted a blue, hazy, faceless woman in a flowing dress. The figure glided along before vanishing like smoke.

The Damned

Location: Monmouth - Cemetery

Date / Time: 1980
Further Comments: A sighting of a cloaked, vampire-like entity seen standing next to the cemetery in 1980 was explained 38 years later when Dave Vanian of The Damned admitted he went for a late night walk after recording at Rockfield Studios. As he walked through the cemetery dressed in a black cloak, he was spotted by the driver of a mini who almost crashed. The story of the cloaked figure appeared in the press a few days later, and Vanian decided not to say anything.

Bright Light

Further Comments: A man walking home in the early hours of the morning heard what sounded like a horse slowly following him. As the sounds drew alongside him, the man was blinded by bright lights which overtook him, vanishing into a nearby closed garage.

Further Comments: The echoing sounds of a horse trotting have been heard, though the reasons why are not clear.

Small Woman

Further Comments: A phantom short woman who would appear next to people's beds with her head cocked would foretell a death in the family.

Fires

Location: Monmouth - Private residences, Brook Crescent
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown, likely 1950s or early 1960s, only lasted a brief period
Further Comments: Two properties here experienced items moving on their own accord, including lights bulbs which were removed from sockets and placed nearby. A couple of small fires broke out in one of the properties, after which the poltergeist appears to have departed.

Black Haired Figure

Date / Time: Late 2003, around 02:00h
Further Comments: The driver of a coach spotted a woman, dressed in black with long hair, on the hillside to the left who quickly descended and appeared to walk straight into the vehicle's path. The driver's colleague, sitting by the door, shouted that they had hit her - also convinced that they had, the driver stopped the coach. Very shaken, the pair disembarked, expecting to see a body. Nothing could be found. The driver later mentioned it to a friend, who said they had heard of a similar incident in the area.

Further Comments: The theatre is reputed to be haunted by an entity nicknamed Fred.

Cloak and Legs

Location: Monmouth - Shire Hall Court
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2006
Further Comments: A caretaker reported seeing a black cloak and the bottom of a pair of legs disappear behind a pillar - investigating further, he found no one in the area. Doors have also been said to close themselves, and the smell of perfume also fills the air. A visiting medium stated the building was haunted by a judge.

Shewri-while

Location: Mynydd Llanhilleth - General location

Further Comments: Shewri-while, a female phantom, would cause people to lose their way upon the mountain. She would call out 'whoo-whoop' and beckon to be followed. If any witness did pursue her, she would lead them on a merry chase lasting several hours, finally disappearing at the spot the witness first found her.

Further Comments: When a man tried to find the hidden hoard of gold contained within the manmade mound, a huge storm blew up scaring the (would-be) thief away.

Juan White

Further Comments: A local witch, Juan White is thought to now haunt this location. She was seen in 2004 by a couple of people who also heard galloping horses just prior to their sighting, though they could not see any of the creatures.

Demon Child

Further Comments: Several tabloids carried the story of a family which was subjected to poltergeist-like behaviour (called demonic by some outlets) which started after a game was played with a Ouija board. It was claimed that a photograph was taken on the property which showed a blue-faced child with a tail.

Elf Meet

Location: Newcastle - Oak tree on former site of castle

Further Comments: The site was also home to a mighty oak tree in which fairies lived. When a storm damaged the tree, a fallen branch was used by locals as firewood, although those who burnt the wood had their homes set alight by the upset fairies.

Further Comments: This site of a former motte and bailey castle is said to be haunted by the spirits of all those who have committed evil deeds.

Well Riser

Location: Newcastle - Unnamed farmhouse in the area

Further Comments: A farmhouse with its own well was said to be haunted by an entity which would emerge from the water. The well was covered over, although it is not known if this stopped the sightings.

Further Comments: This wishing well was used by throwing pins into it, while the waters of the spring would be used to cure joint pain and inflammation.

Blue Lady

Location: Newport - Church

Further Comments: A lady wearing a blue dress or veil is seen in a church yard where a local tsunami washed away many of the graves. It is thought that the phantom woman once lived in the village and would look out of the church tower towards the sea, hoping for her sailor husband to return.

Further Comments: After a rumour started that a property along this road was haunted, police arrested a group of boys who had smashed windows while they waited for the ghost to appear.
