Screaming Women

Lady with Hair in Bun

Location: Ticehurst - Pashley Manor

Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The top half of this phantom figure was seen drifting at the front of the house, the lower part of the body dissolving into mist. Another observer reported a pair of disembodied hands that jutted out from the banister at the top of the staircase, and during at least one night the household was awoken by banging on doors and the crashing of crockery.

Horse

Further Comments: One unnamed lane in the village is the haunt of a headless horse. The village must attract decapitated entities, as a headless pig is also said to haunt the general area.

Thor the Rock Thrower

Location: Treyford - Devil's Jumps (set of five barrows)
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Barrows still present
Further Comments: The god Thor would sit on nearby Treyford Hill. One day the Devil came along and, in a fit of boredom, started to hop from one barrow to the next. This childishness annoyed Thor, who scared Old Nick off by throwing a rock at him.

Smiling Lady

Location: Twineham - Rectory

Further Comments: This figure was seen a few times, dressed in brilliant white and carrying a basket of roses. A harsh, scratching sound briefly haunted the upper part of the building.

Sixty Red Lights

Further Comments: Sixty or more red lights were seen by several people over the skies of Uckfield. The lights moved in close formation and eventually moved away.

Hooded Figure

Further Comments: Thought to be a monk, this character nearly caused an accident as it crossed the nearby road. An unknown 'spooky' presence is said to have been felt dozens of times near a hangar containing motorbikes.

Caesar

Location: Washington - Chanctonbury Ring

Further Comments: Several ghosts have been reported here, including Caesar (and an accompanying army). Other people have reported an elderly man with a long white beard who moves between the trees, and the pounding hooves of invisible horses. Phantom druids (or the Devil himself, depending on the source) appear if you run around the fort seven times at midnight.

Wandering Saxon

Location: Washington - General area

Further Comments: A phantom Saxon warrior was once said to wander throughout this area. Sighting ceased after a large hoard of Saxon coins were discovered by a farmer and either sold or taken by the Government.

George and Abby

Location: West Broughton - Manor house in the area

Date / Time: Circa 1986
Further Comments: Parents thought their young child's friends George and Abby were imaginary until the mother heard disembodied footsteps and another child was scared by an old woman dressed in black during a birthday party. The events ended after an exorcism and the house has been calm since. A couple of years later the parents met another former resident of the house who also had 'problems' with the house.

Warriors

Further Comments: The ghosts reported in this area are said to have strong links to the nearby barrows, connected to a battle that occurred here between Saxons and Viking warriors in the ninth century. Some say that the trees in the area transform into something else at night and move around the area.

Long Man of Wilmington

Location: Wilmington - Windover Hill

Further Comments: This tall hill giant, cut into the soft chalk base, stands around seventy metres in height and is thought to represent any one of several legendary figures. A phantom black dog is also reputed to lurk above the figure, and a local legend says that Arthur fought one of his battles nearby.

Old Farmer

Location: Winchelsea - Queen's Head Hotel

Further Comments: Once a farmhouse before its conversion into a public house and hotel, the ghost present was a farmer who lived here long ago. Another story states that the shade is a former pub owner whose body was displayed in the bar so his regulars could show their respect.

Hiding Highwayman

Location: Winchelsea - Winchelsea Church, monastery ruins

Further Comments: Said to have been seen hiding in the trees around the ruins, the highwayman's target can occasionally be heard galloping up the nearby road. A black soldier in a red uniform has also been reported from the churchyard, and a phantom monk has been observed moving above the ground on nearby private land.

Man from the Twenties

Location: Wiston - Cottage in village

Date / Time: 1954-1958, late summer & autumn time
Further Comments: A couple who moved into their dream home were disturbed by the spectre of a gentleman dressed in 1920's clothing, who had a habit of walking through bedroom walls. His footsteps could also be heard about the cottage, and he often opened the front door.
