Voices in the Vestry

Further Comments: These voices, heard behind the closed and locked door of the vestry, always fall silent if investigated.

Man in Hat

Location: Northian - Crown & Thistle public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: November 1995
Further Comments: This figure was seen upstairs, walking along the corridor, with a feather in his hat. It is not known if he has a connection with the other ghost here, that of an older woman dressed in dark clothing who walks through a downstairs wall.

Molly Beale

Location: Northian - Hayes Arms Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: Molly was murdered in one of the bedrooms of this public house. Her ghost has been seen dressed in grey, holding something in her right hand - though no witness has yet been able to identify what it is.

Cat

Location: Partridge Green - Green Man public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This pub is reputedly haunted by a cat, which probably was not responsible for the kettle once turning itself on in a room devoid of human life.

Things

Location: Partridge Green - Lock House (former convent)
Type: Other
Date / Time: 2013-2014
Further Comments: Singer Adele commented on television programme 60 Minutes that she heard things at night and compared one area of the property to the film The Shining. The singer hired a bodyguard, although still moved away six months after arriving. In 2025 the owner of the house blamed Adele for the house's failure to sell, stating she had 'blighted the property by saying it is haunted'.

Vanishing Black Dog

Location: Peacehaven - Steps on cliffs leading down to beach
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: 2007
Further Comments: A jogger spotted a black dog just in front of him while moving down the steps. Concerned for the creature's welfare, as the owner could not be seen, the jogger followed the dog. No more than a couple of seconds behind the creature, it vanished - there was no sign of the dog in the sea, and nowhere else for it to have gone. Around a year later, the jogger was talking to another person who said that they had been followed by a black dog in the same area.

Bottom Pincher

Location: Peasmarsh - Horse & Cart Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This spirit is blamed whenever a female bottom is pinched. Yeah, right.

Old Lady Sitting

Location: Petworth - The Angel Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This sad old lady watched her closest friend slip and die on the stairs. The shock of this terrible accident so badly affected the witness, she herself died a few days later; her spirit now continues to return to the place she watched her friend's fatal accident.

The Pale Lady

Location: Pevensey - Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Seen walking along the tops of the walls of the ruins, this ghost is believed to be of Lady Pelham, besieged here by Richard II. Some have also reported the sight of a small army by the castle gate.

Businessman

Location: Pevensey - Church of St Mary the Virgin

Further Comments: This ghost is said to look identical to an executive or a businessman, though he vanishes if spoken to.

Fox or Wolf?

Location: Pevensey - Marshes in the area
Type: Werewolf
Date / Time: Pre-1939
Further Comments: The area was once said to be the home to large grey creatures; thought by some to be wolf/fox hybrids, others believed them to be werewolves.

Teenage Girl

Location: Pevensey - The Old Mint House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Standing opposite the castle, the mint house has a room known as 'the haunted chamber' supposed to house the spirit of a young girl - she had her tongue cut out and was left to starve to death in the building.

Plainchant

Location: Poling - House built on site of St John's Priory
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The monks which once worshiped on this site can still be heard singing their praises to God. Occasionally, the voices are joined by an organ.

Edwardian Figure

Location: Portslade - Foredown Tower
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: The haunting here consisted of phantom footsteps, spooky sounds, and a figure that appeared to be covered in mist (though his legs appeared to be covered in tweed).

Footsteps

Location: Portslade - Heart FM, Franklin Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s onwards
Further Comments: A former cinema, this radio station is reputed to be haunted by several ghosts. Cold spots, strange lights and phantom footsteps have been perceived by staff and visitors, and it is claimed that during an interview with Betty Shine in 1990, a power cut hit the building - the backup generator failed but the studio was still able to broadcast.

Strange Man

Location: Portslade - Private house, Old Shoreham Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1990s-2011
Further Comments: The son of the family living here complained that a strange man would enter his room at night. Disembodied footsteps have also been reported, and tugs on bed sheets have also been felt.

Panicking Lad

Location: Poynings - Village pond near the graveyard
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1993
Further Comments: Three boys once died after playing in the village pond - two drowned, and one from the shock of watching his two friends die. The latter boy has been seen running around the pond and crying for help before jumping into the water.

Funeral

Location: Pulborough - Park Mound, castle ruins
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A funeral procession of little people was once seen in the grounds of this ruin.

Cries

Location: Pyecombe - General area of village
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 23 November (St Clement's night) (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Cries for help are said to come from the area where the village smith was once based.

Woman in Mac

Location: Pyecombe - London Road, where the A281 meets the A27
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: A woman in a pale beige raincoat runs across the dual carriageway, disappearing halfway across. Several motorists have reported hitting her and have reported the 'accident' to the police, fearing they have killed someone. Just slightly further down the A281, a ghostly girl with blonde hair has been seen stumbling alongside the road - she vanishes if approached.

Hopping Bottles

Location: Ringmer - Ringmer Inn
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1977
Further Comments: The landlord here claimed that he would be disturbed at night by incredibly loud banging from the walls. Bottles would hop off shelves, doors would open, and lights would go out without warning.

Man on Bicycle

Location: Robertsbridge - A21
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1977
Further Comments: This ghost has been seen cycling at night, without any lights on his bike. It is thought he died mid-twentieth century, after being hit by a lorry.

Tobacco

Location: Robertsbridge - Busheygate
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The home of Andrew Green, author of the paranormal, is said to be haunted by the pungent odour of tobacco.

Exploding Bottles

Location: Robertsbridge - Johns Cross Inn
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: This entity smashed glass bottles, unlocked secure doors and windows, turned lights on, and moved furniture.

Hole Cutter

Location: Robertsbridge - Seven Stars Inn
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1980s, 2013
Further Comments: During the 1980s, this noisy ghost cut holes in bed sheets, played with the connectors on barrels of beer, and pushed items off shelves. A new landlord who took over in 2013 called a paranormal group to investigate what his family had experienced, including items that moved unaided. The pub is also said to be haunted by a red monk.
