Further Comments: The road takes its name from an eighteenth century woman killed along it; some believing Ann to have been a highwaywoman shot during her nefarious, others that she was only running to meet a coach containing her lover. Either way, Ann remained postmortem.

Albert

Further Comments: Members of the Pure Energy Multimedia team reported this building to be haunted by footsteps, moving items, and a figure which would appear on the staircase (whom they nicknamed Albert).

Dilly

Location: Haverhill - Place Farm

Further Comments: Dilly, a young farm hand, was murdered by his master. It is reported his ghost frequently returned until a minister was called to exorcise the spirit.

Slamming

Further Comments: Heavy doors were heard to slam, though they were locked, and typewriters could be heard being used late at night in empty offices.

Raining Straw

Location: Hepworth - Area around the Duke of Marlborough public house

Date / Time: 28 July 1992
Further Comments: A rain of barley straw fell in the village, covering one end of the area. A local man watched the straw spinning in the air before stopping and suddenly falling.

Luck of Hintlesham

Location: Hintlesham - Hintlesham Hall

Further Comments: A cursed mannequin was once stored here - if removed, it was believed disaster would soon follow, and the owner would lose possession of the hall. Other stories associated with the hall include the ghost of a female Lloyd family member walks the stairs and library, eternally suffering for letting her stepson starve to death. The sound of a baby crying was also said to haunt a room but stopped after the remains of a young child were recovered from a fireplace.

Horses' Hooves

Willo' the Wisp

Further Comments: Watched for a period of several minutes by two people, a single greenish glowing ball of light danced around the path and marsh.

Cats

Location: Hollesley - Shingle Street and general area

Further Comments: In 2004 a prison guard spotted a large cat along a road, and four years later another witness encountered a large brown cat. Big Cats of Suffolk website reported that a forester had been warned by colleagues about large cats in the area during the 1970s, and in 2013 stool, hair and field signs were found.

Howling

Location: Homersfield - Bridge

Further Comments: A noisy ghost (perhaps the entity from the Homersfield house that was exorcised) was laid under this bridge. Unfortunately, during repair work on the structure, the ghost was freed; it can now be heard moaning and howling under the bridge.

Distracted by Pigeons

Further Comments: A house in the village had to be exorcised by the local priest; the ghost would interrupt the procedure, until the householder managed to distract the spirit by releasing two pigeons that the ghost watched until the priest finished his task.

Exploding Light Bulbs

Further Comments: A poltergeist was held accountable for exploding light bulbs and electrical items that turned themselves on and off - this happened in dozens of homes over the village.

Cigarette Smoking Man

Location: Honington - RAF Honington

Date / Time: 1979/80, and June 1983
Further Comments: In 1983 two RAF police officers spotted a man dressed in Second World War flying kit smoking a cigarette between two barbed wire fences. They challenged the man, who turned, walked through one of the fences, and faded away. Three years prior to this encounter, a converted H block was home to an entity which could be heard breathing heavily and would occasionally attack people in their beds. A local story reports that a USAF bomber exploded on take-off during the war, and one of the crew's bodies was never found.

Tall Grey Man in Long Coat

Location: Hopton - A12 near Hopton, heading towards Great Yarmouth

Date / Time: 02 November 1981
Further Comments: While driving towards Yarmouth, Andrew Cutajar lost control of his car after passing straight through the figure of a grey man in a long coat who appeared in the road ahead of him. The figure is said to have been spotted several times since the 1950s and is considered to be the ghost of a postman who died in 1899.

Glint of King Edmund's Spurs

Location: Hoxne - Goldbrook Bridge

Date / Time: 870 onwards
Further Comments: Discovered hiding under the bridge after the glint of his spurs attracted the attention of a pair of newlyweds, Edmund was taken and beheaded. The glint is still seen, and it is considered unlucky for newly wedded couples to cross the bridge.

Man with Curly Hair

Location: Hoxne - Road close near the bridge

Date / Time: Circa 1982, summer, around 19:00h - 20:00h
Further Comments: Driving through the village, a witness watched a figure walking along the middle of the road, wearing a long curly wig like that of a barrister. The figure waved at the witness, who drove away after feeling uncomfortable.

The discovery of Edmund (medieval image).

Edmund's Head

Location: Hoxne - Woodland, exact location not known, but a stone cross marks possible location
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Possibly November 869
Further Comments: After Edmund of East Anglia (later known as St Edmund) was defeated in battle, his enemies removed his head and hid it in the deepest part of the forest. Edmund's supporters tried to find the head but were unable to do so, until they called out 'where are you?' and heard the reply 'here!'. The supporters followed the voice and found his head, protected by a wolf that allowed them to take the missing piece of Edmund back to his body. A healing spring formed where the head was found. St Edmund's Monument marks the spot where an oak once stood where Edmund was tied and killed.

Tunnels

Location: Hunston - Mill Hill and surrounding area

Further Comments: A local folktale says there are secret tunnels in the area, running between Mill Hill, Castle Ditches (Langham), and Great Ashfield Castle, and that a farmer lost his pigs after they wandered in and never came out.

Man in Tricorn

Further Comments: The phantom wearing a tricorn hat is said to have died falling off his horse while visiting someone in the area, which is perhaps why he now walks along the road.

Horse Worrier

Location: Icklingham - Hill near Deadman's Grave (now an SSSI)

Further Comments: The ghost of a man and his horse, supposedly buried under the hill, were blamed for worrying other horses after dark, preventing them from using tracks through the area.
