Further Comments: An old story, most likely told to prevent children playing too close to the well, said a mermaid waited in the water at the bottom. She was ready to drown children who touched the water's edge.

Red Hannah

Framlingham Castle, Suffolk.

Children

Further Comments: The castle is said to be haunted by the ghosts of children, imprisoned here when the site acted as a poorhouse. Young faces occasionally appear in attic windows and at other times children's voices are heard around the site.

Little Girl

Further Comments: During an 'MTV Asks Ed Sheeran' interview, Ed Sheeran declared his cottage to be haunted by the ghost of a little girl. Visitors to the cottage had seen the entity and cleaning staff refused to enter the haunted room.

Further Comments: This pub was visited by a Suffolk medium who declared it to be haunted by a young child who had moved in after being banished from a house across the road.

White Hannah

British Defeat

Further Comments: The sounds of battle have been reported here. Local legend speaks of an engagement between Romano-British and Angle soldiers - the British were totally routed and slaughtered.

Leaping Cat

Location: Glemsford - Cornfield in the area

Further Comments: A witness watched a large black cat as it leapt around in a cornfield, as if hunting. A week later the witness and a friend came across footprints almost the size of dinner plates in the same field.

Kitchen Clanger

Further Comments: Another famous case, the bells in the dining room and kitchen rung erratically for a two month period, while carefully watched by the occupiers looking for a rational explanation. None could be found.

Footsteps

Further Comments: The owner of this building reported hearing footsteps crossing the first floor, though there would be no one else in the house. The event always occurred around 19:30h.

Man in Cap

Further Comments: This strange figure was observed twice moving past a window. The owners dashed to see who was outside but could find no one; with no other exit other than the one from which they emerged, the witnesses were at a loss to explain their sighting.

Noisy Ghost

Further Comments: Unusually occurring twice, outbreaks of violent energy have upset the owners living in this building.

Heavy Dragging Upstairs

Location: Great Cornard - Abbas Hall

Further Comments: Sounds of something being dragged in the upper part of the building, together with footsteps, have been reported, as have sightings of an old woman looking through the windows of the house. One story claims the ghost of a hooded nun walks through the area, sometimes accompanied by eerie harpsichord music. In 1952, seven American servicemen from Lakenheath spent the night on the site and reported the temperature fluctuating from stifling hot to freezing cold, and hearing bells pealing through the building.

Further Comments: Author M R James was said, as a child, to have looked out his window and seen a ghostly face, pink and hot, staring back at him from the outside wall. On a 1995 TV programme about the author, a local woman said that a few folk had seen apparitions in the area outside the rectory and that dogs did not like to go near the area.

Lady in Red

Further Comments: This phantom lady dressed in red reputedly steps in the path of incoming traffic only to vanish just before impact. A phantom cyclist is also said to haunt the roads in the village, though reports vary to the type of bicycle he rides.

Three Men

Location: Great Waldingfield - Road to Sudbury, near the public house

Further Comments: Three men wearing long coats and large boots were spotted on the road by a driver. Convincing they were going to hit one of the men, the driver slammed on their brakes; the figures vanished, leaving the witness quite shocked. The witness was later told that the area was once a US air base during the Second World War, and that other people had encountered phantom airmen and even heard old aircraft in the area.

Mary Miller

Further Comments: The grave of Mary lies somewhere along this road - she was a suicide, and her ghost haunts the area.

Seaman

Location: Hadleigh - The White Lion.

Further Comments: A landlord of the pub reported waking up one evening and finding an old man in his bedroom. Though nothing was said, the publican 'felt' the ghost was of a seaman.

Squire Baker

Location: Halesworth - Chediston Street

Further Comments: This street is reputedly haunted by Squire Baker, infamous for throwing a vicar down the stairs and breaking both his legs. An unnamed house along the road is also said to be haunted by heavy footsteps that pass through it.

Vanishing Man

Further Comments: George Davey awoke to find a man in his bedroom, reaching above the wardrobe. The figure wore a brown overcoat and Tilbury hat. George grabbed his nearby shotgun, only to watch the figure vanish. The entity's shoes and socks remained for a second longer, before also vanishing.

Big Black Cat

Further Comments: A large black cat was seen by a witness, around fifteen metres separating them.

Dwarf

Further Comments: A woman travelling by train watched a small man dressed in clothing from two hundred years ago emerge briefly from the floor of the carriage before sinking back.

Puma

Location: Haverhill - A1071 Sturnmer Roundabout, and general area

Further Comments: The Big Cats of Suffolk website reports that large felines have been seen in and around Haverhill for over twenty years, ranging from black leopards to creatures resembling puma and lynx.

Dilly

Location: Haverhill - Place Farm

Further Comments: Dilly, a young farm hand, was murdered by his master. It is reported his ghost frequently returned until a minister was called to exorcise the spirit.

Slamming

Location: Haverhill - Police Station

Further Comments: Heavy doors were heard to slam, though they were locked, and typewriters could be heard being used late at night in empty offices.
