Monks

Location: Ipswich (Suffolk) - WS Cowell's, now the site of the Buttermarket Centre

Date / Time: Late twentieth century (monk), 2016 (footsteps and keys)
Further Comments: While the Cowell's building stood here (a monastery was formally on the site), a few employees reported observing an old monk. Two women, on separate occasions, were supposed to have fainted after seeing the figure, and at least one man had fled during a night shift. Phantom footsteps were also heard in the factory, and perhaps more recently by a cleaner at work in the shopping centre, with the sound accompanied by jangling keys. A local legend says that hundreds of years ago, when the monastery was under attack, the occupants hid their treasure down a well on the site - it was never recovered and remains to this day.

Two Headed Dog

Further Comments: A pool in the area is said to contain treasure, though unfortunately it is guarded by a large hound with two heads. A man who managed to drain the pool of all its contents was visited by the hound, resulting in him reversing his actions and replacing the water.

Bull

Location: Kilmacow (County Cork) - Exact location unknown

Further Comments: A pot of gold hidden in the area was protected by a bull which appeared whenever treasure hunters came to the area. Legend said that the only person who could claim the money as his own had the name Foley.

Protective Voice

Location: Kilmarnock (Ayrshire) - Craufurdland bridge

Further Comments: A hoard of treasure is reported to be hidden under the bridge, though if anyone comes too close to discovering it, a voice talks them into leaving the scene empty handed.

Coffin

Location: Kingston Deverill (Wiltshire) - Barrow

Further Comments: A golden coffin is reputed to be buried under this barrow.

Pendragon

Location: Kirkby Stephen (Cumbria) - Pendragon Castle
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Castle still stands (on private land)
Further Comments: Uther Pendragon, the father of King Arthur, resided here until he and a hundred of his men were poisoned by the Saxon invaders. Some believe Pendragon's ghost remains here. Another ghost, that of Sir Hugh de Morville, haunts the building as punishment for murdering Thomas Becket. Finally, a hoard of treasure hidden here is protected by a phantom black hen that replaces the soil of any hole dug just as quick as it is removed!

Cooper

Location: Lacey Green (Buckinghamshire) - Coopers Grave (area of road), two stones at the junction of a bridleway

Further Comments: Cooper was a highwayman who, so successful at robbing the rich, died a wealthy man. Cooper was buried with his treasure along the road he committed many of his crimes, and the place post-mortem he continues to dwell.

Guardians

Location: Lagg, Isle of Arran (Ayrshire) - Torrylin Cairn
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Structures still present
Further Comments: Strange shadowy entities once stood guard over the burial chambers, cursing anyone who removed treasure or relics. In one instance, the entities followed home a man who removed a skull and tore around his home like a whirlwind. The man returned the skull the following day, but even then, the phantoms remained, until the man was thrown from his horse and killed a few months later.

Gold

Location: Langton Matravers (Dorset) - Wilkswood

Further Comments: A golden hoard is said to be concealed around this area. It is unclear whether this treasure relates to the phantom Romans said to walk the area.

Gold Guardians

Location: Lelant (Cornwall) - Trencrom Hill
Type: Fairy

Further Comments: This hill was formed when a giant buried his treasure, leaving a troupe of warrior fairies to protect it. They have been called into action at least once, appearing as a would-be treasure hunter arrived armed with pick and shovel.

Katie Neevie's Hoord

Location: Lesmahagow (Lanarkshire) - A very large stone hidden on a farm in the area

Further Comments: A local rhyme reads 'Between Dillerhill and Crossford, there lies Katie Neevie's hoord'. It is thought that the hoard takes the form of gold concealed within a kettle, a boot and a bull hide.

Knight

Location: Lewes (Sussex) - Mount Caburn - iron age hillfort
Type: Legend - Old Nick

Further Comments: A knight in gold armour and a silver coffin are said to be concealed under this fort. The fort was once believed to have created by Old Nick, one of the mounds of dirt he left behind while digging the nearby 'Devil's Dyke'.

Golden Warrior

Location: Lexden (Essex) - Belgic (or Bronze Age) barrow

Further Comments: While a local legend said that a warrior clad in gold was buried here; when excavated in 1924, gold and silver objects were found (but no golden warrior).

Macduff's Castle

Location: Lindores (Fife) - Body of water nicknamed Sillar Lake (likely to be currently known as Lindores Loch)

Further Comments: Traces of a castle thought to have belonged to Macduff exist in the village, and an old legend says that before the castle was ransacked, the treasure was thrown into a lake.

Headless Horseman

Location: Litchfield (Hampshire) - Angledown Barrow (aka Angle Down Barrow)

Further Comments: Holding his head under one arm, this horseman was said to have manifested when a small group of men attempted to dig up the barrow while looking for treasure (reputed to be a golden image).

No Gold

Location: Little Bosullow (Cornwall) - Men Scryfa Menhir

Further Comments: It was thought that a golden hoard was concealed under the stone, though searches have found nothing.

Chest of Wealth

Location: Little Wittenham (Berkshire) - Money-Pit, The Clumps

Further Comments: This chest of fabulous treasure is buried somewhere in the area and is protected by a large black raven. This bird once told a would-be treasure hunter that the wealth belongs to one man and one man alone.

Solid Gold

Location: Littlebredy (aka Little Bredy) (Dorset) - The Grey Mare & Her Colts (long barrow)

Further Comments: Hidden under the Grey Mare is reputedly a coffin made from solid gold. There is also a local legend that connects the barrow to a phantom horse that runs around the area.

Pirates

Further Comments: After concealing a hoard of gold and other treasures, these ghostly pirates still protect their stolen wealth.

Druid

Location: Llanddaniel Fab (Gwynedd) - Bryn Celli Ddu

Further Comments: A farmer who thought the prehistoric monument contained treasure entered the chamber, only to come face-to-face with a pale ghostly druid. The farmer fled, but later returned and realised that the figure was just a tall white stone.

Harpist

Location: Llandysul (Dyfed) - River Teifi
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The sound of a harp that can be heard at the stretch of the river known as 'Pool of the Harper' is thought to belong to a performer who drowned there. The banks of the river, which stretches for some 75 miles, are said to be home to a couple of phantom women. A woman in green wearing emeralds is said to protect a hidden treasure (details of which are sadly lacking), while a woman dressed from head to toe in black drifts around looking for something (or someone).

Basking Beast

Location: Loch Arkaig (Highland) - Waters of the loch

Further Comments: This creature, with a head like that of a horse and a single hump, rested ten metres from the shoreline, before slowing sinking beneath the water. A legend says that the Jacobites once hid a collection of treasure in the waters of the loch, where it remains.

John's Treasure

Location: Long Sutton (Lincolnshire) - King John's Hole, pool of water halfway between town and King's Lynn (may no longer be present)

Further Comments: The stagnant pool of water was reputed to be the place where King John's wealth was lost. One report stated that some of the treasure was recovered when the area was partly drained.

Golden Horseshoes

Further Comments: A horse shod with golden shoes is said to be buried in this area.

Money Coffin

Further Comments: A local myth says that one thousand guineas are buried on this site, concealed within a coffin.
