Drunken Man

Location: Farnham (Surrey) - Castle Street, & Castle Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Seen climbing down from a phantom coach, this figure staggers across the road and enters a nearby house. The Castle Theatre that stands down this road is reportedly haunted by a suicide which plays with the lights and record player.

Faceless Nun

Location: Galway (County Galway) - Mick Lally Theatre, and nearby roads
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early 1980s?
Further Comments: The faceless nun which walks the area may have been heard by a lone worker in the theatre, although he did not hang around to find to confirm the theory.

Actor

Location: Gateshead (Tyne and Wear) - Little Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The theatre is reportedly home to disembodied voices and footsteps that can be heard after the building is closed for the night. One story says the theatre is haunted by an actor who died on stage.

Nora

Location: Glasgow (Lanarkshire) - Theatre Royal
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A wannabe actress, Nora was laughed off stage after a disastrous audition and promptly took her own life. Her shade now proves she'll last longer on stage than any of her former contemporaries.

Hilda Knight

Location: Glossop (Derbyshire) - Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1989
Further Comments: A great theatre lover, Hilda died in 1958. However, it is widely believed her ghost remains at the building, playing with lighting rigs and sometimes manifesting in the form of a butterfly.

Pallet Pusher

Location: Gloucester (Gloucestershire) - Poundstretcher, Eastgate Street (was formally the Theatre Royal)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2005
Further Comments: A young woman hanged herself in this building when it was a theatre and was said to haunt the location. In 2005, Poundstretcher's CCTV footage appeared to show a spectral figure of a Victorian woman pushing a whole pallet of goods to the ground.

Mary Blandy

Location: Henley on Thames (Oxfordshire) - Town Hall & Kenton Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1969
Further Comments: The ghost of Mary Blandy became angered when a play about her life was in production. Blandy would manifest in the two buildings and blamed for the destruction of mirrors and other breakables, and playing with lights.

Shadow

Location: Hornchurch (Essex) - Queen's Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twenty-first century
Further Comments: One manager claimed to have witnessed the shadow of someone move past a light when alone in the staff room, while another heard a piano coming from the empty stage.

Floating Charlie

Location: Hull (East Riding of Yorkshire) - Hull New Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: His real name unknown, this man with dark straggly hair wears a long grey coat. He has been seen several times and is often heard banging or walking around the theatre.

Arthur Lucan

Location: Hull (East Riding of Yorkshire) - Tax office built on site of the Tivoli Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Arthur died in his dressing room in the theatre. He was known for his dislike of taxes (and tax men), so it was no surprise that his ghost came back when the Inland Revenue building was placed on top of the theatre. His spirit is dressed as Old Mother Riley, a character he played in fourteen films.


Eden Court Theatre, Inverness.

The Bishop's Wife

Location: Inverness (Highland) - Eden Court Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Wife last seen 1980s, child in the early 20 century, other in 2002
Further Comments: Committing suicide on the site in the late nineteenth century, before the theatre was built, the ghostly figure has since developed a green, post-mortem hue. The gardens are also haunted, by a little girl seen early in the twentieth century. More recently, an usher reported being yanked backwards by her shirt collar, even though she was alone.

Alfred

Location: Ipswich (Suffolk) - The Rep public house (former theatre)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Frequently seen when this pub was still a theatre, a visit from Alfred was considered by the troupe to be a lucky omen. He would sit in the fourth or fifth row, silently watching performances.

Footsteps

Location: Kilkenny (County Kilkenny) - Watergate Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2014
Further Comments: The caretaker of the theatre said in the local media that they had heard footsteps and voices in areas which were empty, and that the ghost would stand in the gantry.

Sarah Siddons

Location: Lancaster (Lancashire) - Grand Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Sarah's brother managed this theatre, so she came here quite a few times. Her grey form is sometimes seen watching the new performances.

Pianist

Location: Leeds (West Yorkshire) - City Palace of Varieties (theatre)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Two ghosts have made a home of this theatre - one plays the piano late at night, the other is an unknown lady who brings with her a zone of cold.

Edwardian Child

Location: Leicester (Leicestershire) - Haymarket Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: This small boy has been seen several times dressed in a sailor's suit, normally during a rehearsal. Before the theatre was built, a child once drowned in a well on the land and the shade has been named as his.

Manageress

Location: Leicester (Leicestershire) - Little Theatre, Dover Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The theatre is reputedly haunted by a former manageress dressed in Second World War garb.

Soldier

Location: Lerwick (Shetland) - Garrison Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: An old story says that a ghostly soldier would lurk at the foot of a staircase near the performers' entrance, while another says the lighting area is haunting by something.


Theatre Royal, Lincoln.

Nudging

Location: Lincoln (Lincolnshire) - Theatre Royal
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Some people have reported feeling a gentle 'nudge' while no one else is nearby. Footsteps have been heard crossing the empty stage, and shadowy figures are glimpsed briefly before vanishing.

Lady in Red

Location: Liverpool (Merseyside) - Royal Court Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1990s (lady), 1970s (Cavalier)
Further Comments: One member of staff witnessed a ghostly older lady wearing a red cardigan in the bar area, while a few years earlier two stagehands watched a ghostly Cavalier emerge from a wall who turned to face the men before disappear through the same wall. The site is also reputed to be haunted by a former caretaker.

Old Man

Location: Liverpool (Merseyside) - Royal Philharmonic Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Little is known about this shade that is sometimes seen drifting around the building.

George Bernard Shaw

Location: Malvern (Hereford & Worcester) - Festival Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century
Further Comments: The loud footsteps heard throughout the building are attributed to Shaw, though no one has seen his form.


The Palace Theatre, Manchester.

Grey Lady

Location: Manchester (Greater Manchester) - The Palace Theatre, Oxford Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s
Further Comments: A cleaner who died in the building, this figure has been seen drifting around in a grey mist, and seen once in the ladies' toilet, sitting in a corner before vanishing.

Yellow Boots

Location: Mansfield (Nottinghamshire) - Mansfield Palace Theatre
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A young female witness reported seeing a pair of yellow boots walking themselves across the stage, stopping when the witness tried to draw attention to them.

Sarah Thorne

Location: Margate (Kent) - Theatre Royal
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1955 and 1972
Further Comments: Sarah was responsible for creating the best company ever seen here - her proud spirit once walked down the aisles and onto the stage. Another ghost, that of an actor who committed suicide, is held responsible for creating strange lights that float around. It is unclear which entity created the disembodied voice that spoke to an actor in an otherwise empty dressing room. In 1972 a workman was reported to have been 'petrified' after spotting a ghost, although who or what he encountered is not known.
