Black Shuck and his Kin from across the Isles

Rough Coated Dog with Large Yellow Eyes

Location: Barham (Suffolk) - Along the main Norwich Road, Barham Church Lane, just past Barham Hall gates.
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: 1910s?
Further Comments: The dog harassed a couple of men walking back from work - one of them reported trying to hit the creature with a stick, but the piece of wood passed straight through the dog's body. Another version of the story states the dog disappears into a solid wall.

Shuck Haunt

Location: Barnby (Suffolk) - Bridge over Hundred Stream

Further Comments: Legend states the stream (and sometimes the further area) to be the haunt of a Shuck. As a sidenote, King Edmund reputedly used an unidentified ford in the village as a hiding place while escaping the Danes.

Chained Hound

White Dog

Further Comments: A woman passing through the cemetery watched a large white dog as it faded away in front of her.

The demonic dog of the marshes.

Red Eyed Hound

Location: Beckingham (Nottinghamshire) - Old Trent Road

Further Comments: This large black dog with glowing eyes is said to have driven a local farmer mad after the man tried to block the creature's path. The farmer was also left almost completely paralysed. The hound is said to walk from the churchyard to nearby marshland before fading from view.

Capelthwaite

Location: Beetham (Cumbria) - General area near the river Bela

Further Comments: Also known as a Cappel, this spirit is said to be able to transform into any four legged creature, though it prefers the form of a dog. A local vicar is said to have banished the Capelthwaite into the River Bela, even though it would help some locals drive their sheep.

Sluagh

Further Comments: The Sluagh are a fairy host that travel across the sky to the land of the ever young, Tir-nan-Og. A couple of hunting hounds belonging to the Sluagh are said to have landed in Benbecula briefly before heading off on their travels.

Glowing Mouthed Hounds

Further Comments: The locals here say their devil dogs, known as Shag Dogs, have a glow that emanates from the inside of their mouths. A pit, long since filled in, was said to be the creatures' home.

Large Hound

Further Comments: This phantom dog, said to be huge, patrols the road. Its presence makes normal dogs nervous and horses shy. One story says to stare into the creature's eyes three times will result in death.

Hunt

Further Comments: Thought to be part of a phantom hunt, these ghostly dogs have been heard running and yelping through woodland. It is also thought that a headless shuck haunts the area, though it is less sure whether the entity is connected to the hunt pack.

Blythburgh Church, Suffolk.

Shuck

Location: Blythburgh (Suffolk) - Holy Trinity Church

Further Comments: During a church service in 1577, a large black dog burst in and created havoc. Blackened scorch marks said to be caused by the creature still exist today on the church door. Many years later, in 1973, a man working in the marshes near the church reported hearing a panting dog standing beside him, though nothing could be seen. A local story says a tunnel runs from the church to the sea.

Watcher Shuck

Further Comments: The large black dog here would observe people while they were in the woods, though the creature would never leave the protective tree line. The site may also be the haunt of a grey woman and a grey man.

Shadows

Location: Bournemouth (Dorset) - Talbot Woods

Further Comments: A shadowy hound, said to be slightly larger than a Saint Bernard dog, was reported to haunt this area. The creature has never ben seen directly, but only from the corner of the eye. Scraping sounds resembling claws on concrete can also be heard, always behind the witness.

Invisible to Some

Location: Bradwell (Derbyshire) - Town gates?

Further Comments: Only one of the two lead miners playing cards at the gates to the town could see a large black dog as it approached them. The man tried to point the creature out to his co-worker, but his friend was completely obvious to the phantom hound which then disappeared. Shaken, the witness refused to go to work the following day, and later heard his co-worker and several others had been killed when a shaft collapsed.

Bedroom Shuck

Hound with Pointed Ears

Location: Brereton (Staffordshire) - Coal Pit Lane, and roads leading to Brereton

Date / Time: 1972, 1985
Further Comments: This large black dog, with pointed ears and glowing eyes, is said to haunt the area. In 1972, one witness watched a large ball of light crash into the ground, and the hound appeared soon after.
