The A148.

Three Tolls

Location: King's Lynn (Norfolk) - A148
Type: Other
Date / Time: 02 March 2024, 23:58h
Further Comments: Driving late home from King's Lynn, a witness heard the distinctive sound of a huge bell toll three times. Not being able to see anything nearby that would be chiming so late, the witness interpreted the tolls as a warning and took additional care driving home.

Hooded Figure

Location: Kingsley (Cheshire) - Road towards Frodsham, near cemetery
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2014
Further Comments: A hooded figure, without visible legs, by the edge of the road was spotted by a driver. The entity crossed the road in front of oncoming traffic, although no vehicles reacted, and the figure vanished as the driver reached the spot where it had first been seen.

Headless Cyclist

Location: Kingsthorpe (Northamptonshire) - Road passing cemetery gates
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Winter 1940
Further Comments: Hit by a car on a cold winter's night around 1915, this cyclist appears when the weather conditions match those in which he died. The accident decapitated him, hence his present form.

White Horse

Location: Kingston Lisle (Oxfordshire) - Crossroads at the foot of Blowing Stone Hill, and B4507
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A ghostly white horse haunted the crossroads, while the B4507 running from the crossroads toward Wantage was home to a headless horseman.

Car

Location: Kingston Lisle (Oxfordshire) - Seven Barrows Road (aka Scary Hill), at the top of Blowing Stone Hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A sighting of a phantom car was reported along the road known as Seven Barrows, heading toward Lambourne. One person was 'buzzed' by two red orbs, about the size of footballs, as they flew low overhead at the top of Blowing Stone Hill one evening.


Desmond Castle in Kinsale.

White Lady

Location: Kinsale (County Cork) - Road from Fort to Desmond Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Julian Hawthorne's minor vampire story Ken's Mystery is said to be based on an encounter with a phantom woman who travelled from the fort to Desmond Castle, where she vanished.

Dark Man in Hat

Location: Kirk of Shotts (Lanarkshire) - Canthill Road, near the watch tower
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth / early twenty-first century
Further Comments: A scared female driver reported that she had hit a man who walked out of the mist along this road - he had bounced over the car, and she watched him land on his feet on the other side. When she climbed out to see if he was okay, the figure vanished. Several other people claim to have encountered the ghost, though they have been on foot at the time.

Pale Woman

Location: Kirkbean (Dumfries and Galloway) - Road between village and Prestonmill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre-1890
Further Comments: A woman in white was said to haunt this stretch of road, walking along the treetops and occasionally on the road with (mortal) travellers.

Woman in White

Location: Kirkbean (Dumfries and Galloway) - Road coming in from the north
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre-1894
Further Comments: This phantom woman's past is unknown, although her quiet form was said to startle passersby. One local story says that a local farmer's daughter exploited the story; dressing in a white sheet to meet her lover by the roadside ensured no one came to speak to her.

Dunn

Location: Kirkbean (Dumfries and Galloway) - Three crossroads, near Arbigland
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre-1894
Further Comments: The body of a young stableman by the name of Dunn was found here - the law believed he had committed suicide, but others thought he had been murdered by the brother of a woman he was romantically involved with. Dunn's ghost was said to have returned to the spot, and occasionally the area was also haunted by a white lady.

Blind Lord Wharton

Location: Kirkby Stephen (Cumbria) - A685 between town and Ravenstonedale
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Wharton was struck blind (some say by God, for punishment for his sins) as he travelled home - his phantom now walks erratically, attempting to find its footing.

First Fatality

Location: Kirkfieldbank (Lanarkshire) - Outside Linnmill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1912 onwards
Further Comments: Occupants of the building have reported hearing a car door being slammed shut, though nothing is ever visible. The first fatal Scottish car accident occurred just outside this property when a woman was run over.

Copeman

Location: Kirton in Lindsey (Lincolnshire) - Road between Kirton and Grayingham
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Nineteenth century?
Further Comments: A man named Copeman murdered along the road may still haunt the area on horseback. Two men cycling back from Kirton spotted the ghostly horseman.

Peggy Whooper

Location: Kneesall (Derbyshire) - Common on the road between village and Ossington
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The road was said to be home to a phantom woman who would make her presence known after sunset.

Floating Hitchhiker

Location: Knipton (Leicestershire) - Road from Belvoir castle towards village, at T-junction
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1994
Further Comments: Witnesses in a car saw a floating figure with no legs thumbing a lift at the junction. The ghostly man appeared to be wearing a long coat. The driver intended to pass him by rather than stop, but the mysterious figure stepped out in front of the car causing the driver to brake hard - the apparition vanished as they came to a screeching halt.

Hound

Location: Knockandhu (Moray) - B9008 road
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Early to mid twentieth century
Further Comments: This dark dog is said to be extremely unlucky for all those who see it, for the creature's temper is reportedly quite heinous.

Tormented Nun

Location: Knowlton (Dorset) - Road between village and Hinton Martell
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The shadowy figure of a nun is reported to walk along the road between two villages.


A phantom white lorry.

White HGV

Location: Knutsford (Cheshire) - M6 near the town
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A driver was terrified as a glowing white lorry charged towards him travelling the wrong way down the M6. He pulled onto the hard shoulder and closed his eyes, feeling the HGV drive past - but looking into his rear view mirror immediately after, there was nothing there.

Figure

Location: Knutsford (Cheshire) - Tatton Mile (road running next to Tatton Park)
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 19 October 2009, approximately 22:30h, 05 March 2021
Further Comments: Driving with his full beams on, in 2009 this driver spotted the figure of a man standing in the road with his hand out, as if he wanted the car to stop. As the car drew closer, the figure vanished, causing the driver to swerve out of shock. Twelve years later, a couple in their car spotted a tall dark figure facing the road by the end of the wall. The figure looked curious enough for them to turn the car around to have another look, but no one could be found and there was no other traffic.

Cooper

Location: Lacey Green (Buckinghamshire) - Coopers Grave (area of road), two stones at the junction of a bridleway
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Cooper was a highwayman who, so successful at robbing the rich, died a wealthy man. Cooper was buried with his treasure along the road he committed many of his crimes, and the place post-mortem he continues to dwell.

Horse & Cart

Location: Ladybower Reservoir (Derbyshire) - A6013
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century?
Further Comments: A motorcyclist encountered a horse pulling a cart with a high back and sides, being led by a man holding a large whip. As the cyclist slowed to overtake the cart, he was momentarily blinded by an approaching car. When his vision had returned to normal after a few seconds, the cart had vanished.

Smoking RAF Pilot

Location: Lakenheath (Suffolk) - Lakenheath Air Force Base, perimeter road
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: Spring 1951
Further Comments: A phantom hitchhiker was seen along the road, dressed as a RAF pilot. An American policeman picked him up, only to find that the pilot had disappeared a few minutes later.

Glowing Horseman

Location: Lamarsh (Essex) - Road between Lamarsh Hills and Bures St Mary
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1800s
Further Comments: Terrorising all who travelled the road between dusk and dawn, it took the combined efforts of all the local priests and their staff to exorcise this ghost.

Bus

Location: Lamberhurst (Kent) - Road between town and Frant
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Witnesses report seeing this vehicle coming towards them along narrow parts of the road; they pull in to give way, only to see the bus vanish. An earlier version of the story says the bus (or coach) is seen parked at the side of the road but vanishes when witnesses pass.

Victorian Group

Location: Lambourn Woodlands (Berkshire) - M4, between Junction 15 & 16
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1990, 00:30h
Further Comments: A witness passing along this road noticed a group of people walking towards the motorway. Even though the ground was uneven, they moved as if on a smooth path. The lead figure, a woman wearing a maroon Victorian dress with matching bonnet, held aloft a ridiculously small umbrella. A man close behind appeared to be listening to the woman, and wore a top hat.
