Phantom Horses & Riders from across the Isles

Lady

Location: Binfield (Berkshire) - Billingbear House, and hawthorn tree (which may no longer exist)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre-1924 (white lady), hawthorn tree on Christmas Eve (reoccurring)
Further Comments: A ghostly white lady haunted this house before it burnt down. One room was transported to Pace College, Manhattan, and is said to contain a ghost (whether it is the white lady is unknown). Another piece of local folklore says a hawthorn tree on the grounds blossoms red flowers at midnight on Christmas Eve before quickly reverting to its previous state.

Galloping Horses

Location: Blackburn (Lancashire) - Mill Hill area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: A woman waiting for the bus watched a herd of horses stampede close by, but no one else had seen them. A few years later she discovered someone else had also, more recently, seen the herd in the same area.

Black Dog

Location: Blakeney (Norfolk) - Little Lane

Further Comments: This lane is a favoured haunt for the black shuck. The same lane is reportedly haunted by a ghostly horse and carriage.

Doggett

Location: Blandford Forum (Dorset) - Area near Eastbury Park (no longer standing)
Type: Vampire
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A corrupt manservant who stole thousands of pounds from his employer, Doggett finally killed himself, and now drives his phantom horse and carriage along this area. One local story says he returned as a vampire; after his body was exhumed many years after his death (from St Mary's Church in Tarrant Gunville) it was found to be uncorrupted, with a rosy tint to the cheeks.

Anne Boleyn

Location: Blickling (Norfolk) - Blickling Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 19 May (Reoccurring)
Further Comments: To mark the anniversary of her death, a coach pulled by four headless horses pulls up on the driveway, with a decapitated Anne on a seat, her head in her lap. After Anne's headless white ghost arrives, it is said then to climb out, before inspecting each room of the Hall (the place of her birth and childhood). On the same date, Sir Thomas Boleyn is said to drive a team of headless horses in this area, cursed to cross twelve Norfolk bridges (including those at Aylsham, Coltishall and Wroxham).

Duelling Knights with Fiery Swords

Location: Blofield (Norfolk) - Path leading from Blofield church to St Michael's at Braydeston
Type: Legend

Further Comments: Returning to this realm once a year, the knights are said to be Sir Thomas Boleyn (father of Anne) and Sir Thomas Paston. Their shades battle with burning swords, and Lady Anne watches from a nearby carriage, pulled by headless horses.

Stomping Horse

Location: Blundellsands (Lancashire) - Round House

Further Comments: The building was once haunted by the sounds of a horse stamping its feet and whinnying loudly. When an equine skeleton was found under the house during extension work, it was reburied in a nice area of the grounds; the ghost no longer troubled the household.

Female in Long Dress with Highwayman

Location: Blythburgh (Suffolk) - A12 from Ipswich, towards Kessingland, near Blythburgh common
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1700s onwards
Further Comments: Sometimes appearing with a horse, the unknown woman and highwayman have been reported a few times over the past two hundred years.

Toby's Walks, Blythburgh.

Black Toby

Location: Blythburgh (Suffolk) - Toby's Walks (recreational area)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A drummer in the army, one night Toby became so drunk he left the local public house to rape and murder Anne Blakemore. Or so the story goes. In reality, Anne's body displayed no indication of foul play, but the mob wanted justice, so Toby was hanged. It was said that Toby's ghost drove a coach pulled by four black horses through the area, with other people stating that he just walked along banging his drum in regret. It is most likely the ghost of Toby was created by local smugglers to deter others from investigating their activities.

Cursed Stone

Location: Boat of Garten (Highland) - River Spey
Type: Curse
Date / Time: Still present?
Further Comments: When the waters are low, an inscribed stone can be seen in the river - it is believed cursed, and anyone who meddles with it is doomed. Adding to the treachery of the waters, a white horse is said to patrol the river, looking for people to drown.

Dealing with the Devil.

The Devil and the Cobbler

Location: Bosava (?) (Cornwall) - House no longer standing, location not known
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Built by a cobbler who made a deal with Old Nick and went back on his word, the house became haunted by the man and the devil. A miller who lived nearby was losing money due to his proximity to the location and asked Parson Corker to banish both entities. The parson brought some friends, set up his magic circle and after a mighty battle (involving a storm which levelled most trees in the area) banished the Devil. The ghost proved more difficult to banish, and in the end the house was demolished.

Bournemouth Town Hall, Dorset.

First World War Soldier

Location: Bournemouth (Dorset) - Bournemouth Town Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 31 October (reoccurring)
Further Comments: This incorporeal soldier of Indian heritage appears here once a year to help himself to a drink of water. There are also a few reports of phantom horses and carriages being seen outside the building, while a ghostly cat is also said to haunt several of the town hall rooms.

Roman Battle

Location: Bowerchalke (Wiltshire) - Between village and Woodminton

Further Comments: Headless horses can be seen, and fierce fighting can be heard - the area was the site of a battle between Roman legionnaires and the Britons.

Crusader

Location: Bracebridge (Lincolnshire) - Bracebridge Hall & Church

Further Comments: Buried at the nearby church, this knight materialises at the hall (by a portrait) and rides a spectral mare to the graveyard to ensure his body has not been disturbed. He also sometimes appears in the church itself.

Horse and Rider

Further Comments: A father and daughter driving home from school watched as an image of a horse and rider emerged from a hedge and crossed the road before disappearing.

Coach

Location: Bradford Peverell (Dorset) - Road west of village, near River Frome, leading towards Muckleford
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Summer months at midnight (reoccurring)
Further Comments: A coach that crashed into the river, killing the horse and driver, is said to periodically repeat the accident. Another report says that the coach overturned into a boggy area.

Margaret Vernon

Further Comments: Margaret lost her mind after her lover married another woman - her shade is seen leaving the hall on horseback, riding off to the church where her boyfriend wed.

The 'Galloping Ghost'

Location: Bradwell on Sea (Essex) - St Peter's on the Wall church area

Further Comments: Several people have heard horse's hooves pass close by to them in this area but have seen nothing. This could be the same entity as a roman soldier seen riding a horse near the site of a long gone roman castle.

Further Comments: The cottage was once home to a phantom figure and another ghostly entity which galloped on horseback through locked gates and headed towards the church.

Further Comments: A phantom horse drawn funeral procession occasionally passes by the area.

Sir Thomas Boleyn

Further Comments: This bridge is said to be one of several which Sir Thomas passes over in his coach on the anniversary of his daughter's death.

Coach and Six

Location: Brechin (Angus) - Kinnaird Castle and surrounding area

Further Comments: James Carnegie, a former laird at the hall, was well versed in the black arts - this has resulted in his soul being doomed to travel in a black coach pulled by dark horses for the rest of eternity.

Sir Thomas Boleyn Drives Headless Horses

Location: Breckles (Norfolk) - Breckles Hall

Further Comments: The father of Anne Boleyn is said to be cursed with driving his coach over forty (or eleven) Norfolk bridges. One of the passing points is Breckles Hall, where the spectre once scared a poacher to death (another version states that the poacher was taken by the Devil because of his constant law breaking). Locals say that anyone who views the coach is dragged down to hell.

Grey Horse

Further Comments: Home of a Welsh water horse, this creature who tempt people to sit on it before terrifying the rider by dragging them over rough land and through the air.
