Further Comments: It was written that some fishermen would rub salt into their nets and sow salt into the water to blind the elves, who would otherwise ruin a good day's fishing.

Well of Our Lady

Location: Threshfield (North Yorkshire) - Village well
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A local man stumbled across a party of goblins, only managing to elude the creatures by hiding in the well. Ever since that day, the holy well has been thought to repel evil.

Unclothed Man

Location: Tiree (Argyll and Bute) - Unknown farm on the west of the island
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Pre twentieth century
Further Comments: Cattle left overnight were looked after by a Brownie that remained invisible to moral eyes. A seer investigated and reported spotting an unclothed man looking after the cows. To show his gratitude, the seer left a gift of tartan trousers and shoes; the Brownie put on the clothing and left the island.

Dwarven Miners

Further Comments: Working deep beneath the mountain, the dwarfs would create items for mortals only if the price were right.

Pixie Home

Location: Torquay (Devon) - Kents Cavern (aka Kent's Cavern)
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: One of the stories the tour guides share is that the cave was once inhabited by pixies.

Dinky Men

Location: Tregoss Moor (Cornwall) - General area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Nineteenth century?
Further Comments: Named 'Dinky Men' by an older woman who lived in a cottage on the moor, these Cornish piskeys would help the woman and her grandchild when assistance was needed. Other visitors to the moor would be less fortunate; they would be pixie led into the bogs.

Fairy Meet

Location: Trellech (Gwent) - Area around the wells
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: 23 June (or Midsummer Eve) (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Fairies are said to make their presence known around this area once a year.

Piskie Kidnapping

Location: Treonike (now St Allen, Truro) (Cornwall) - Nearby woodland
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A young local boy was taken one night by the fairies but found several days later alive and well. He said that a beautiful lady had taken him into a fantastic palace where he had fallen asleep, only to wake up to see his rescuers.

Cliff Dancers

Location: Trevone (Cornwall) - Newtrain Bay

Further Comments: Before the cliffs eroded away, fairies were said to dance of the edge so often that the grass never grew, and tiny footprints could be seen in the dirt.

Way In

Location: Tunstead (Derbyshire) - Thor's Cave, Manifold Valley
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Wayne Anthony, in Haunted Derbyshire and the Peak District, writes that hidden within the cave is an entrance to the fairy kingdom, though one needs to possess second sight to find it. A ghostly Roman centurion is said to stand guard at the mouth of the cave.

Fairy Hill

Location: Uig, Isle of Skye (Highland) - Sithean Beinne Bho'idhich - Fairy Glen

Further Comments: Sounds of music and partying can be heard coming from this mound, the little folk still in full party mode. One legend says that a local fiddler was paid handsomely in gold to perform for the fairies at one of their parties. He fiddled for ten hours, after which he returned home, only to find a hundred years had elapsed.

Further Comments: A small opening in the limestone here was thought to lead to fairyland, though it is possible for a slender person to crawl into the cave.

Entrance to Fairyland

Location: Vale of Neath (West Glamorgan) - General area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Possible twelfth century
Further Comments: Elidurus visited fairyland via an entrance located somewhere in the Vale. In the other land, horses and greyhounds were the same as our world, only much smaller, the sky always cloudy, and the fairies consumed only milk. Elidurus returned several times, but after trying to steal some gold for his mother, discovered that the doorway to fairyland had been once again hidden.

Sea Trows

Location: Ve Skerries (Shetland) - Sea in the area

Further Comments: These water-based troll-like creatures were once believed to swim the waters here, occasionally coming onto land to rest. It is thought they dressed in seal's skin while swimming, pealing it off to resemble humans when needing to leave the water.

Fairy Kitchen

Location: Vindolanda (aka Chesterholm) (Northumberland) - West of area, in ruins containing hypocausts

Further Comments: The scorch marks on these ruins led to some saying the site had been used by fairies as their kitchen.

Moved

Location: Walsall (Staffordshire) - St Matthew's Church
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Church still present
Further Comments: The fairies took a dislike to where the church was going to be built, so moved the foundation stones to the top of the hill where the church was finally built.

Jenny Greenteeth

Location: Warrington (Cheshire) - Unknown pit in a field, Latchford
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Pre twentieth century
Further Comments: Children were warned to stay away from a dangerous pit, as Jenny Greenteeth would drown them.

Dancing Fairies

Location: Waterhouses (Staffordshire) - Cauldron Low

Further Comments: The hill here is reportedly home to the little people, who spend the night-time hours dancing on the summit.

Moved by Fairies

Location: Wendover (Buckinghamshire) - Church

Further Comments: The church was planned to be built elsewhere, however the local fairy population had other plans, and moved the building materials to the place the structure now stands.

Fairy Loaves

Location: Westleton (Suffolk) - Common

Further Comments: It was once believed that fossilised sea urchins that were found in a gravel pit here were loaves of bread made by fairies.

Troll Home

Location: Whaness (Orkney) - Dwarfie Stane
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Stone still present
Further Comments: Several stories exist around this stone. One says it was thrown into location by an angry giant and became the home of a passing troll. Another says it was the home of a giant and his wife, while a third names the occupant as a dwarf named Trollid.

Rabbit-sized Demon

Location: Willoughton (Lincolnshire) - Country lane

Further Comments: This sober witness stated that, while cycling, a small bipedal creature with horns ran out in front of him, travelling just as fast as the bicycle. It disappeared as it hopped on a grass verge.

Egg Layers

Location: Wilstead (Bedfordshire) - Private land, four-hundred-year-old oak
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Spring (reoccurring)
Further Comments: The former owner of the land claimed that on spring evenings, fairies danced around the tree and would lay pink eggs.

Pixie Party

Location: Wold Newton (East Riding of Yorkshire) - Willy Howe barrow
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A human gatecrasher reported joining a pixie party that was occurring within this barrow - he soon ran off, not wanting to fall under a fairy spell. Another man was said to have picked up a golden coin each day from the barrow, left there for him by a fairy who liked him, although she stopped her act of generosity when the man told others of her. Finally, another story says there is treasure here, although it can never be removed.

Fairy Wishes

Location: Wooler (Northumberland) - Pin Well, Horsdon Hill

Further Comments: By dropping a bent pin or money into this well, visitors to the well would appease the fairy which lived nearby, and maybe have their wish come true.
