Sightings of Fairies & Their Kin

Wilkie

Location: Pierowall, Westray (Orkney) - Knoll in the area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Early nineteenth century
Further Comments: Milk would be poured daily into a hole in this knoll, to appease the entity known as Wilkie. If anyone refused to donate their fair share, they risked clothing being stolen or their cattle dropping dead.

Fairy Fair

Location: Pitminster (Somerset) - Blackdown Hill, between Pitminster and Churchinford (once known as Chestonford)
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A villager riding home spotted a large fair taking place on the hill, with many people dressed in colourful clothing. He decided to investigate further, but as he rode up to the site, the fair vanished. After riding through the area, the villager turned, and was once again able to see the event behind him.

Fairy Kingdom

Location: Pontneddfechan (Powys) - Criag-y-Coed

Further Comments: This rocky outcrop is said to be the last haunt of the fairy folk in Wales.

Dancing fairies

Location: Pontypool (Gwent) - Trevethin (was known as Trefethin), exact area not known
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A schoolgirl would dance with fairies under a crab apple tree, initially believing them to be other children, but eventually accepting them as fairy folk. After the novelty wore off, she gave up dancing with the fairies, but this displeased them; they dislocated her leg.

Naked Pixies

Location: Porlock Vale (Somerset) - Meadows around area
Type: Fairy

Further Comments: Pixies in this neck of the woods would sit around their fires naked, and if seen by a human, the voyeur would be 'fairy led' - forced to dance and run in frenzy through woodland until sunrise.


Portland, Dorset.

Mass Evacuation

Location: Portland (Dorset) - General area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: 1750s
Further Comments: When the first church bell rang across this region, all the local fairies packed their bags and fled.

The Hall Knocker

Location: Poulton le Fylde (Lancashire) - Stalmine
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This entity, now dismissed and contained under a stone in the local church, would help the local farmers with the more boring tasks.

Fairy Feast

Location: Preston (Lancashire) - Ribbleton Moor (area since urbanised), area known as Red Scar
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A man travelling across the moorland came across a fairy celebration with the tiny attendees including a king and queen, servants, and a band. The fairies ignored the human observer, although when the king demanded the execution of a chef for forgetting the wine, the man spoke up and tried to grab the king; the entire party vanished, leaving only a little crushed grass.

Funeral

Location: Pulborough (Sussex) - Park Mound, castle ruins

Further Comments: A funeral procession of little people was once seen in the grounds of this ruin.

Little People

Location: Puxley (Northamptonshire) - General area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: It is thought the village is named after a type of fairy that once frequented the area.

Fairy Cup

Location: Raasay Island (Highland) - Exact location not known
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A man named Hugh joined a fairy party and stole a glittering cup. Despite being chased, Hugh escaped; the fairy cup ended up with the MacLeods on the island.

Kelpie Bridle

Location: Rannoch (Highland) - Lochanna Cuile (location may have changed identity), near or on Rannoch Moor
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A man travelling from Pitlochry to Nether Lochaber rested in this area and found a horse's bridle made of pure silver which burnt hot to the touch. A wise woman told the man the bridle belonged to a Kelpie and instructed him to hang the object in his home on a crook of rowan. The man did as instructed and was blessed with luck for the rest of his life.

Eveling

Location: Ravenglass (Cumbria) - Roman ruins
Type: Fairy

Further Comments: Eveling, King of the Fairies, along with his daughter Modron lived in the Roman ruins found here.

Helpful Hob

Location: Reeth (North Yorkshire) - Sturfitt Hall (aka Sturfit Hall) (no longer standing?)
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A domesticated fairy who took up residence here left when the owner insulted it by offering the creature a new set of clothing.

Lady of the Lake

Location: Rhondda (Mid Glamorgan) - Llyn Fawr
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This beautiful woman sits on a stone on the bank of the lake, though she dives under the water if she becomes aware of anyone watching her.

Entrance to Fairyland

Location: Rhyd-ddu (Gwynedd) - Llyn Cwellyn
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: There was once a way into fairyland here - one man who took it disappeared for seven years! Another story says one man waited by the hill and grabbed the first fairy who emerged, forcing the entity to marry him. A nearby lake contains a floating island, from which fairy music can be heard.

Coal Discovery

Location: Rhymney (Gwent) - Valley area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The coal deposits in the valley are said to have been discovered by fairies after they killed a giant which was attacking their homes. The giant was assassinated as he slept, and the fairies set fire to his body; they realised that the ground continued to burn after their enemy's body had turned to ash.

Location: Risca (Gwent) - Twm Barlwm mountain
Type: Fairy

Further Comments: Fairies are said to produce the sweet music which occasionally drifts down from the mountain at night.

Peg Powler

Location: River Tees (Durham) - Waters of the river
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This water entity would pull under anyone who swam too close to her home - witnesses would only see her green hair seconds before their friends who would be pulled under the water.

White Horse

Location: River Wharfe (North Yorkshire) - Wharfedale's Strid
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: 01 May (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Together with a fairy, this pale horse rises from the dangerous waters once a year. It has been known to drown people who come too close.

Green Teeth

Location: Rochdale (Greater Manchester) - Bodies of water around Heywood
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Early nineteenth century?
Further Comments: The water entity which drowned children and the unwary in this area, named as Green Teeth, Jenny Long Arms, or Grindylow, was described as having 'skinny claws' and 'secret dart'.

Flame Farewell

Location: Rochdale (Greater Manchester) - Fairy Dell
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Pre-1838
Further Comments: A miller named Ralph was said to have encountered a group of fairies at this waterfall. When the fairies vanished, they left a brief burning light in their wake. Unfortunately, the dell was destroyed during a flood in 1838.

Cure for Whooping Cough

Location: Runswick Bay (North Yorkshire) - Hob Holes - caves along the coastline
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: Any child taken into the caves at low tide would be cured by the little people (or little person, depending on the legend) who lived within.

Goblin Home

Location: Ryme Intrinseca (Dorset) - Buckbarrow (current name of location unknown)
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Seventeenth century?
Further Comments: Though no trace of the structure now remains, a barrow in this neighbourhood was once the home of goblins (or a close fairy family member).

Healing Waters

Location: Sabden (Lancashire) - Fairy Well
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Still present?
Further Comments: The one time rendezvous point of the little folk, their magical powers ensured the water of the well cured the sick.
