Hanged Boy

Further Comments: Students here talk of the ghost of a lad who could not hack the pressures of academia and hanged himself in a dorm. His shade is sometimes seen down the corridors.

Thomas Holloway

Location: Egham (Surrey) - Royal Holloway University

Further Comments: Founded by Thomas Holloway, the man himself is said to haunt the Founder's Building, though he manifests in the form of a black cat. Jane Holloway, Thomas's wife, is said to haunt the fourth floor of the same building.

Jane Shore

Further Comments: Shore, who manifests as a grey lady, is said to haunt the tower where she died in 1526.

Workman

Location: Exeter (Devon) - Exeter University

Further Comments: A phantom man dressed in painter's overalls has been seen walking down the corridors.

Knockers

Location: Finedon (Northamptonshire) - Charity Girl's School (currently a private residence)

Further Comments: The school was briefly visited by an entity that would wake the residents after lights out, with knocks and bangs.

Dutch Doll

Location: Finedon (Northamptonshire) - Charity Girls School, church, and now local area?

Date / Time: Early twentieth century onwards
Further Comments: In the early 1900s the headmistress of the Girls School Mary Ozier had a wooden doll made to represent a schoolgirl of the time the school was built (1717). It was about 90 centimetres tall, painted and possessed a frighteningly realistic piercing stare. Nicknamed 'The Dutch Doll' and placed above the door on the inside of the school, the girls in the school became petrified of it. The children were terrified of the doll's unemotional yet evil looking face, and started circulating accounts of seeing and hearing it walking around at night. After the school's closure the doll was mounted on a wall in the Church, though by this time someone had taken a saw to its feet in an attempt to stop it walking around. On the night of 18 January 1981, the doll was stolen from the Church and has never been heard of or seen since - some people believe it walked out on its own accord.

Lady Fleetwood

Further Comments: This pallid woman is reported to traverse the school grounds once a year.

White Figures

Location: Glasgow (Lanarkshire) - Milton Street School (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early September 1878
Further Comments: Shortly after construction of the school, people started to report seeing white figures flittering around, attributing the ghosts to a nearby mill disaster which took several lives. The rumour attracted a crowd, reportedly between three and four thousand people, which police dispersed. Detectives declared the ghosts were an illusion caused by lamplight from neighbouring houses reflecting off glossy maps which, in turn, were caught in a draft from an open window.

Teacher

Location: Gloucester (Gloucestershire) - Former school along Archdeacon Street

Further Comments: The building is home to a former teacher who died after falling down a set of steps - he is seen dressed in a black gown and wearing a mortar cap.

Pony and Trap

Location: Gorleston (Norfolk) - A143 - Gorleston/Beccles road; the Lily Pit - once a deep pond, now filled over and a school stands there

Further Comments: Though there does not appear to have been any reports of this pony since the pond was filled, it was reported that the creature would travel at breakneck speed before vanishing into the water.

Foxes

Location: Gormanston (County Meath) - Area around Gormanston Castle (currently part of a college)

Date / Time: Prior to a death of a Viscount Gormanston
Further Comments: Whenever all the local foxes gather at the front door of the castle, a death will occur soon after.

Self-Playing Piano

Location: Great Burstead (Essex) - Hope House, aka Tower House School
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: As well as the piano, phantom footsteps have been heard outside the building.

Monks in Grey

Location: Great Missenden (Buckinghamshire) - Missenden Abbey (now absorbed into a college)

Date / Time: 1972
Further Comments: These figures have been observed around the site of the former abbey, while others believe that the ghost of a woman, dressed in Victorian clothing, who committed suicide also haunts the site.

Hostile Presence

Location: Hadleigh (Essex) - The Old Schools

Further Comments: The 'presence' would appear to be responsible for turning lights on and off, loud bangs, and phantom footfalls along the corridors.

Mr Horsley

Location: Harrogate (North Yorkshire) - Ashville College
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Horsley is said to be a former teacher who now allegedly haunts this college.

Matilda

Location: Hockley (Essex) - The Old School House, currently a private residence.
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1957 onwards?
Further Comments: The opening of doors and ringing of bells resulted in the owners of this house calling the 'ghost' Matilda, suspecting the spirit to be that of a child.

Mr Yates

Location: Hull (East Riding of Yorkshire) - Old Grammar School, Trinity Square
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Most likely to be seen at 20:40h
Further Comments: A former vicar at St Mary's Lowgate, Mr Yates is considered an unlucky ghost, and those who have seen him drifting along the first floor corridor have suffered misfortune.

Grey Man

Location: Hullavington (Wiltshire) - Road near Burton Hill House School

Further Comments: A driver reported narrowly missing a man in grey clothing who stood in the middle of the road - the figure raised its arm and vanished.

Wallaby

Location: Illkestshall St Lawrence (Suffolk) - Field, and roads near primary school
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: August 2025
Further Comments: Caught on video hopping across a field, this wallaby would also be spotted near a local school. The creature left the area after residents were asked to call the police or RSPCA if the macropod materialised.

Hooded Figure

Location: Inverurie (Aberdeenshire) - Pathway running parallel with the school playing fields

Further Comments: Two people walking down this lane on a misty night watched a hooded figure drift through a seven foot high metal wire fence.

Tramp Carrying a Sack

Location: Johns Cross (Sussex) - A21 near Vinehall School

Further Comments: Disappearing halfway across the road, this scruffy man has concerned several drivers who thought they may have hit him.

Leaping Teacher

Location: Keyworth (Nottinghamshire) - South Wolds school

Further Comments: There is a myth that a teacher working at the school during the 1960s killed herself by leaping from a third floor window. At least one former student based at the school has reportedly heard the re-enactment.

Young Child

Further Comments: Several motorists have had to brake sharply to avoid hitting a child who runs out in front of them. The infant always quickly vanishes after the driver stops. The area is also home to a phantom coach which halts at the front gates at midnight.

Bedtime for Children

Location: Kincardine (Angus) - Tulliallan Castle; Tulliallan Police College

Further Comments: A witness staying at the police college recalled hearing children laughing along the corridor outside her dorm, before the sounds moved into the room. Although alone in the dorm, the witness heard all the beds squeak as if people where climbing into them, including her own. A chair also in the room moved slightly across the floor.
