Sounds of Battle

Location: Cotgrave - Colston Gate, open road flanked by fields
Type: Environmental Manifestation

Further Comments: Two friends were walking through the area on a cold frosty morning. There was a sudden gust of wind, followed by the sounds of shouting, horses galloping, and the clash of swords. Both witnesses were scared by their encounter.

Faceless Miner

Location: Cotgrave - Cotgrave Colliery
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: October 1987
Further Comments: Gary Pine, while at work in a mine shaft, watched a man dressed in black clothing wearing a helmet walk through a wall. Pine said that the figure had no face.

Hairy Man

Location: Cotgrave - Owthorpe Road and Cotgrave Forest
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: December 2015 / January 2016
Further Comments: A family returning home from a Christmas party in December 2015 were driving along Owthorpe Road when they witnessed a tall, hairy figure standing by the side of the road. British Bigfoot Research visited the site in January 2016 and investigated nearby Cotgrave Forest, where they heard howls from an unidentified creature.

Nanny

Location: Cromwell - Rectory
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This Victorian phantom dressed as a nanny was seen by a witness as she bent over his bed. The site is also haunted by a young boy spotted on the staircase and a serving girl seen outside the front door.

Bomber

Location: Cropwell Bishop - Skies over village
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2004
Further Comments: Looking out from their kitchen window, two witnesses watched a large grey aircraft pass silently overhead. As the aircraft was low, the witnesses thought it was going to crash, and stepped outside to investigate, although nothing could be heard. They later found out that a bomber had crashed nearby during the Second World War.

Grey Lady

Location: Cuckney - Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This phantom female is said to lurk around the pews running down the right hand side of the church.

Streaking Irishmen

Location: East Stoke - Area around the river
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Thought to be mercenaries from the War of the Roses, these ghostly troops joined the losing side and were stripped and humiliated for their efforts.

Weeping Angel

Location: East Stoke - Churchyard
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: The angel that stands in the churchyard is said to weep real tears.

Adam

Location: East Stoke - Public house (no longer operating)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early 2000s
Further Comments: A BBC website claimed three entities made their home here - a woman with a dark complexion, a crying baby, and a young boy named Adam who would throw small items around.in the kitchen.

Hiding Place

Location: Edwinstowe - Major Oak, Sherwood Forest
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Tree still present
Further Comments: It is widely believed that Major Oak, the largest oak in England, was used by Robin Hood to hide from his enemies.

Man in Long Coat

Location: Edwinstowe - Redbrick House restaurant
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1989 / 1990
Further Comments: A man with long hair and a long coat has been spotted standing outside this restaurant at various times of the day and night.


A ghostly figure on a bike.

Cyclist

Location: Edwinstowe - Road between Edwinstowe and Ollerton
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1960s onwards
Further Comments: A ghostly cyclist is reputed to suddenly appear in front of moving cars, passing through them before vanishing.

Hood's Marriage

Location: Edwinstowe - St Mary's Church
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The wedding of Robin Hood and Maid Marian is said to have taken place in this church.

Dark Blob

Location: Elksley - A57
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A bus driver and conductor reported hitting a dark, non-human shape that screamed on impact with their bus. Coming to a halt, they both searched the road and surrounding area but failed to find whatever they thought they had run over.

Top Hatted Man

Location: Gedling - Private residence, Wollaton Avenue
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: December 1986 - February 1987
Further Comments: A family threatened to leave their home after experiencing the disembodied crying of a child and spotting strange shadows moving around, including one of a man in a top hat moving down the staircase. A clergyman blessed the site, although the family reported that the visit had only made the strangeness worse.

Children

Location: Gonalston - Gonalston Mill (now a block of flats), and nearby bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Before being converted into residential housing, the building had a reputation of being haunted by the children who died working in the mill. The sounds of the children are also said to be heard under the bridge.

Woman

Location: Great Markham - Vicarage
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1880s
Further Comments: The site was said to be haunted by the ghost of an unknown woman. The haunting ceased after a skeleton was found in the garden during building work and the remains formally laid to rest.

White Cat

Location: Gunthorpe - River Trent, riverside road leading to West Stockwith at the end of Commonpiece Lane
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 1890s
Further Comments: This light coloured feline was the size of a pig and was said to have vanished when a local man tried to kick the creature.

Little Girl

Location: Gunthorpe - Unicorn Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: A ghostly little girl is said to haunt room number seven, pulling the covers off the bed if she takes a dislike to the occupant.

Radley

Location: Halam - Valley southeast of village
Type: Environmental Manifestation
Date / Time: 24 December (reoccurring)
Further Comments: The buried village of Radley is hidden somewhere in this area, and long vanished church bells can be heard on Christmas Eve.

Elizabeth 'Bessie' Shepherd

Location: Harlow Wood - Road from Mansfield to Nottingham passing by the area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This young lady was robbed and murdered along the road two hundred years ago - her killer (Charles Rotherham) was caught after he tried to sell her shoes. Her ghost appears if anyone touches the small stone memorial which marks the spot she was killed. Some reports spell Bessie's surname as Sheperd or Sheppard.

Cavalier

Location: Hawton - Road across the bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A fisherman encountered a spectral Cavalier passing over the bridge on horseback. The entity faded away.

Nan Scott

Location: Holme - St Giles Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A woman who survived the Great Plague but who then starved to death, Nan is said to scurry around the churchyard or can be heard moving around in the upper part of the church.

Lady in Black

Location: Hucknall - Nottingham Road, area known as Jenny Burton's Hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 05 October 1986, 22:45h
Further Comments: After driving his car into a woman dressed in black 1950s clothing, Brian Tweedy stopped, fearing he had killed the pedestrian. Looking around the area, he could find no sign of the woman, and his car suffered no damage. Tweedy claimed that cars ahead and behind him on the road had also hit the figure and they had also stopped at the scene.

Servicemen

Location: Hucknall - Seven Stars public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: A member of staff reported feeling a tap on the shoulder when no one was near here. The public house was investigated by the Ghosts of Nottingham team. They speculated that the building may be haunted by Second World War servicemen who were killed by a bomb while staying next door.
