Nottinghamshire Ghosts, Folklore and Forteana

Lion

Location: Tollerton - Area near airport
Type: ABC
Date / Time: Summer 1976
Further Comments: Dozens of witnesses reported seeing a large cat that resembled a lioness, though no hard evidence was ever produced.

Gamekeeper

Location: Tuxford - A614 (Nottingham bound side) near gate to farmers field
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late summer, 1987
Further Comments: Three people riding scooters all spotted a figure dressed like a gamekeeper standing in the mist at the gate leading to a field. The figure wore old style clothing and had only a dark shadow where his face should have been.

Shadowy Figure

Location: Tuxford - House close to A6075
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early 2000s
Further Comments: One occupant of the house awoke to see a shadowy human-like figure at the end of her bed. She shouted out; the figure floated diagonally across the corner of the bed and through the closed door. All three occupants of the property had also heard an old fashioned music box playing. The source of the tune sounded as if it moved from room to room when searched for.


A green light and a phantom youthful face.

Young Miner

Location: Warsop - Colliery
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A chock fitter encountered a green light and a youthful face that terrified him while in the pit. The fitter later spotted a photograph in the canteen, showing the figure he had met - the youth had died in an accident ten years previous. There were other reports of three figures walking together, though they always disappeared without warning.

Man

Location: Warsop - Meadows surrounding the rectory (now a housing estate)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century?
Further Comments: Before being turned into a housing estate, these meadows were supposedly home to a phantom man who left no footprints in the wet grass.

Rector

Location: Warsop - Rectory (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This rectory and the surrounding area were haunted by a former occupier, though since its demolition the ghost has fallen quiet.

Floating Woman

Location: Watnall - Nuthall to Moorgreen road, just before the Royal Oak public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1964
Further Comments: A witness on a motorbike narrowly avoided hitting a woman who crossed the road on a bend. Turning around to shout at the woman, the witness then realised she was floating across the road.

Protection Symbols

Location: Welbeck - Creswell Crags
Type: Other
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: In 2019, dozens of witches' marks were (re)discovered in the caves. The apotropaic marks are likely to date back hundreds of years and used to trap evil forces and protect people nearby.

Miss Clements

Location: Wellow - Durham Ox public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This phantom woman, named as Miss Clements, was said to have been killed in 1857 by a cart driven by the son of the landlord.

Young Lad

Location: Wellow - Red Lion public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The Red Lion is reputed to be home of two ghosts. One is of a young boy who drowned in a well in the cellar, while the other presence is said to be a former customer who had nowhere else to go!

Cloaked Figure

Location: West Bridgeford - Lady Bay public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s / 1980s
Further Comments: This cloaked gentleman would be quite commonly seen in the car park, though he has not been seen now for many years. One witness said the figure looked like a monk but had no face.

Dog with Large Eyes

Location: West Stockwith - Intake Lane
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This canine entity with eyes as large as saucers is said to roam the fields around the lane.

Morse

Location: Wigsley - Control Tower
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Post-Second World War
Further Comments: There are a few reports (or rumours) of the faint tapping of Morse code coming from this empty building. A driver who passed the tower in the mid-1990s briefly spotted an airman in beige along the road.

Cavalier

Location: Winthorpe - Lord Nelson public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This phantom soldier was observed to pass through a bedroom wall. Phantom footsteps have also been heard, and beer taps turn themselves off in the cellar.

Huge Dog

Location: Worksop - Blyth Road, near Hodsock Priory
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: 11 May 1991
Further Comments: A black dog with glowing red eyes standing taller than a Great Dane was encountered by a woman driving home. The creature appeared to be dragging something large across the road, although the witness was not sure what it was. Distracted by something else for a few moments, the woman turned back to look at the hound, only to find it had gone.

Pale Girl

Location: Worksop - Canal north of priory, known as the Canch
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1870s onwards
Further Comments: This phantom girl wearing a long pale dress was pulled from the canal waters during the late nineteenth century. She now walks along the bank, fading from view as she approaches a bridge.

Jennet

Location: Worksop - Clumber Park
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: December 2022
Further Comments: Jennet's ghost is sometimes seen walking the park, dissipating into mist if approached. She wears a long grey coat, or a brown cloak. A couple claimed to have encountered and filmed the ghost in 2022.

Alice

Location: Worksop - Lion Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Alice hanged herself after having her love rejected by the owner of the hotel during the 1800s (or thereabouts). Her preferred area of haunting would appear to be in the older parts of the hotel, in particular Room 201.

Mr Straw

Location: Worksop - Mr Straw's House, National Trust property
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: The contents and furnishings of this building have changed little since 1932, when Mr Straw senior died. His son kept the place unchanged, and when he died in 1990, the building became an instant museum. However, the footfalls heard walking about after all the visitors have left are thought by staff to belong to Mr Straw.

Running

Location: Worksop - Private residence, Grafton Street
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 2007, a three to four week period
Further Comments: For a short period, the occupier of this home was subjected to footsteps running up and down the staircase, mirrors swinging, doors being slammed and items vanishing, only to reappear a few hours later where they were originally left.

Lost Child?

Location: Worksop - Private residence, King Street
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1987-1994
Further Comments: For a period of eight years this building was subject to poltergeist-like activities, including lights switching themselves on and off, the toilet self-flushing, doors opening, the sound of footsteps in empty rooms, and small handprints appearing on the walls.


Strange, dancing, blue lights in woodland.

Dancing Lights

Location: Worksop - Scratta Wood
Type: Other
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The woodland is said to be home to dancing blue lights that emerge once the sun has set - it is not clear what these lights are locally thought to be.

Hot Coal Thrower

Location: Worksop - Unknown house, was in an area of land called New Building Ground
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1883
Further Comments: This poltergeist littered the floor with hot coals and threw kitchen items around - the events appeared to centre themselves on a teenage girl called Eliza Rose.

Blue Lady

Location: Worksop - Worksop Priory - church tower
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown (but reoccurring between 01:00h - 04:00h)
Further Comments: This entity is said to jump around on the roof of the building, before fading away. Some say that this figure is not a woman but a man. The blue woman has also been observed drifting around the grounds of the priory.
