Further Comments: James Gillies has three dreams which involved discovering a hoard of treasure buried under a stone. Alas, he told several people of his dream, and when he finally found time to go and look under the stone, all he found was a hole and evidence that the hidden treasure had recently been taken.

Suicidal Woman

Location: Millfield - Coupland Castle

Further Comments: Appearing in the form of white mist, this haunting manifestation also woke all in the building up several times with her unearthly screams, and thunderous running footsteps. The woman reportedly killed herself by jumping off the battlements.

Warrior with Sword

Location: Morpeth - Mitford Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: An old phantom warrior haunts this castle. Waving a sword in one hand, the other hand holds a bloody head which continues to scream.

Flying Fruit

Location: New Hartley - Unknown Property
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Likely early 1960s
Further Comments: This home became occupied by an entity that threw fruit and bread around the kitchen. While alone in the house, a photographer reported watching a spoon fly through the air.

Soldier Shot by UFO

Location: Newbiggon on Sea - Old RAF base
Type: UFO
Date / Time: September 1942
Further Comments: A soldier once based here alleged, in later life, to have been abducted while on guard duty at the base. Remembering the abduction from his dreams, the man claimed he fell unconscious after being hit by a thin beam of light.

Healing Waters

Location: Newminster - Newminster Abbey (private site)

Further Comments: A stone coffin was nicknamed 'The Trough of the Maid of Meldon' and its water said to be good at healing warts and backpain (although it was also used by cattle). Some also believed it was haunted by Meg of Meldon, although you required 'the sight' to perceive her.

Monk following a Woman

Location: North Shields - A1058 between town centre and Willington
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: It is said that the woman murdered someone and tried to confess her crime to the monk - he refused to hear her, so she committed suicide. The monk felt so guilt that he took his own life shortly afterwards. The female ghost is said to wear a grey cloak with grey shadows in place of eyes.

Black Dog

Location: North Shields - Milbourne Place, now Smith's Dockyards
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: 31 October (reoccurring)
Further Comments: The area near the docks is haunted by the ghost of a sailor murdered by his parents; they failed to recognise their own son after his many years at sea and killed him for his money. He returns in the form of a large black dog, patrolling the area where the crime was committed.

Long Black Creature

Location: North Shields - North Sea (exact area not known)
Type: Cryptozoology

Further Comments: After setting off from North Shields, the crew of a boat spotted what they believed to be a piece of wreckage floating in the sea. The men investigated and realised the object was alive and actually the head and neck of a black creature. The creature swam away and dived, revealing a nine-foot (2.74 metre) wide body.

Running

Location: North Shields - Private residence close to River Tyne

Further Comments: A witness said they had nightmares for years after moving out of this property, where they heard running on the staircase, staining appearing on furnishings, and their name being called when no one else was present.

Fairies dancing in the grass.

Dancers

Location: Otterburn - Dowcraig Top, around a mile north of village
Type: Fairy

Further Comments: This solitary spot was a place for the fairies to meet and dance to their little hearts' content.

Energy Draining Soldiers

Location: Otterburn - Fourteenth Century battle site
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 1960s
Further Comments: The witnesses here were in a taxi - the engine died without warning and they found themselves surrounded by phantom soldiers which faded away as they closed in on the car.

Second World War Officer

Location: Ouston - RAF Ouston
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The Newcastle Journal reported that lights would turn themselves on and off in the sickbay, and an internal door which was kept locked would be open by morning. Personnel near the sickbay would hear footsteps and other strange noises at night, even though the area was secure. Some blamed the ghost of an officer killed on site during the Second World War.

Bearded Knight

Location: Prudhoe - Prudhoe Castle

Further Comments: Local legend says the castle is haunted by a grey lady, while others have seen a knight with a rather large beard.

Parcy Reed

Location: Redesdale - Pringle Haugh, Batinghope Glade (author's note - could not locate on map, so likely to have been renamed)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Weather Dependent: Stormy weather
Further Comments: Parcy (or Percy) was murdered by a family named Hall, who lured him from his home using the pretext of hunting. Although the murderers were caught, Parcy's ghost, with rifle slung over one shoulder, remained in the area.

Robin of Redesdale

Location: Redesdale - Statue which stood on around Watling Street area
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Statue no longer present (destroyed pre-nineteenth century?)
Further Comments: The statue formerly known as Robin of Redesdale was said to be that of a hunter, a giant who lived in the neighbourhood, poisoned by his brother.

Terrifying Figure

Location: Riding Mill - Former mansion (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre-twentieth century
Further Comments: Constructed by the Orde family, the house was left after becoming home to an entity so terrifying that no one could live on the site.

Anne Armstrong

Location: Riding Mill - Wellington Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Anne was a witch hunter who caught five pagans practicing 'black magic' in the hotel. It is not known whether the witches escaped execution, but Anne was found hanged in the hotel shortly after and foul play was suspected. Anne's ghost haunts her favourite bedroom.

Singing Woman

Location: River Pont - Captain's Walk (area may no longer exist)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A phantom woman holding a baby was said to walk along this path, singing 'Hush a bah baby, hush a bah bee, it was Captain Walker that killed thou and me'.

Perceval Reed

Location: River Rede - Between Todlaughhaw and Pringlehaugh (neither place may exist - not on contemporary maps)

Further Comments: Reed was killed by a member of a rival family, tricked into firing a musket which backfired. His ghost took many forms, although was frequently seen wandering the same five mile stretch along the river after being laid by a local man. By one account, the ghost was cursed to bow a finite number of times to the living - this it archived and left, but not before killing the person responsible for binding it along that stretch of river.

Misty Lady

Location: Rock - Area between Rock and South Charlton

Further Comments: This mournful spirit makes the journey between Rock and South Charlton once a year, marking the death of her husband.

Black Cat

Location: Rothbury - Bridge over River Coquet

Further Comments: The structure is reportedly haunted by a dark moggy.

Running Child

Location: Seahouses - Longstone House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This young child has been heard running around on the upper levels of the building and putting in fleeting appearances on the lower floors.

Woman in Grey

Location: Seaton Delaval - Mausoleum
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Likely to be the same entity which haunts the Hall, the woman in grey is also reported to lurk around the mausoleum. Local legend says that the site was never blessed by a priest.

Peering Figures

Location: Seaton Delaval - Private residence

Further Comments: One visitor to this site awoke in his bed and found several ghostly figures standing over him. Other events reported at the site include a witness who watched as a picture was lifted off a dressing table and fall to the floor and two people who heard a woman's scream - when they investigated, no one else could be found on the site.
