Alas, he told several people of his dream, and when he finally found time to go and look under the stone, all he found was a hole and evidence that the hidden treasure had recently been taken.

Further Comments: A soldier once based here alleged, in later life, to have been abducted while on guard duty at the base. Remembering the abduction from his dreams, the man claimed he fell unconscious after being hit by a thin beam of light.

Further Comments: It is said that the woman murdered someone and tried to confess her crime to the monk - he refused to hear her, so she committed suicide. The monk felt so guilt that he took his own life shortly afterwards. The female ghost is said to wear a grey cloak with grey shadows in place of eyes.

Further Comments: The area near the docks is haunted by the ghost of a sailor murdered by his parents; they failed to recognise their own son after his many years at sea and killed him for his money. He returns in the form of a large black dog, patrolling the area where the crime was committed.

Further Comments: After setting off from North Shields, the crew of a boat spotted what they believed to be a piece of wreckage floating in the sea. The men investigated and realised the object was alive and actually the head and neck of a black creature. The creature swam away and dived, revealing a nine-foot (2.74 metre) wide body.

Further Comments: A witness said they had nightmares for years after moving out of this property, where they heard running on the staircase, staining appearing on furnishings, and their name being called when no one else was present.

Further Comments: The witnesses here were in a taxi - the engine died without warning and they found themselves surrounded by phantom soldiers which faded away as they closed in on the car.

Further Comments: The Newcastle Journal reported that lights would turn themselves on and off in the sickbay, and an internal door which was kept locked would be open by morning. Personnel near the sickbay would hear footsteps and other strange noises at night, even though the area was secure. Some blamed the ghost of an officer killed on site during the Second World War.

Further Comments: Parcy (or Percy) was murdered by a family named Hall, who lured him from his home using the pretext of hunting. Although the murderers were caught, Parcy's ghost, with rifle slung over one shoulder, remained in the area.

Further Comments: The statue formerly known as Robin of Redesdale was said to be that of a hunter, a giant who lived in the neighbourhood, poisoned by his brother.

Further Comments: Constructed by the Orde family, the house was left after becoming home to an entity so terrifying that no one could live on the site.

Further Comments: Anne was a witch hunter who caught five pagans practicing 'black magic' in the hotel. It is not known whether the witches escaped execution, but Anne was found hanged in the hotel shortly after and foul play was suspected. Anne's ghost haunts her favourite bedroom.

Further Comments: A phantom woman holding a baby was said to walk along this path, singing 'Hush a bah baby, hush a bah bee, it was Captain Walker that killed thou and me'.

Further Comments: Reed was killed by a member of a rival family, tricked into firing a musket which backfired. His ghost took many forms, although was frequently seen wandering the same five mile stretch along the river after being laid by a local man. By one account, the ghost was cursed to bow a finite number of times to the living - this it archived and left, but not before killing the person responsible for binding it along that stretch of river.
