Moaning

Further Comments: A criminal once held here has returned as an indistinct shadow, softly moaning in pain and regret, always around the Christmas period.

Catherine of Aragon

Location: Buckden - Buckden Palace
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Catherine is still reported to make the odd appearance in a room by the chapel.

Presence by Fireplace

Location: Chapel Brampton - Spencer Arms Public House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 04 June 2011
Further Comments: A visitor to the pub in 2011 felt the presence of two figures by the fireplace. When staff were asked whether the site was haunted, the visitor was told the area close to the fireplace was reputedly haunted by a man and woman from the seventeenth century named Jack and Emily.

Dumbbell Shaped Craft

Location: Church Stowe - Road through village

Date / Time: 22 November 1978
Further Comments: Elsie Oakensen saw this craft as she drove through the village, returning from work. Passing underneath, her car lost power, and she experienced fifteen minutes of 'missing time' - later hypnotic regression revealed she was taken on board the craft.

Strange Sprite

Location: Church Stowe - St Michael's Church
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: During construction of the church
Further Comments: This religious building was due to be built in a slightly different position, but every night a large fairy appeared and moved the walls. The builders finally gave in and finished the construction where the sprite recommended.

Another Battle Site

Location: Church Stowe - Valley west of Church Stowe
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: John Pegg nominated this area as Boudica's final battle site in 2010 after a landscape analysis.

Skulking Dudley

Location: Clopton - Clopton Manor and surrounding area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A local cad, Dudley was murdered by a farm hand he abused for several years. Even post-mortem Dudley still made his presence known around the estate, until exorcised many years later.

Old Woman

Location: Cold Ashby - East bound from Long Buckby towards Cold Ashby
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1999, 03:30h
Further Comments: Returning home in stormy weather after a night shift, a driver spotted an old woman in his headlights walking towards him. She was bend over, as if she had a bad back, and held a shawl close to her head. Her clothing looked as if it was from the eighteenth century. As the driver passed her, a shiver ran down his spine, and looking into his rear view mirrors, realised she had disappeared. The driver stopped to try to find her, and then drove up and down the road a couple of times, but there was no sign of the woman.

Giggling Girls

Location: Corby - Knight's Lodge public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Heard coming from an empty bedroom, the sounds of young female laughter and chatter were heard. There are also reports of phantom footfalls on the staircase, and a fleeting glimpse of a shadowy figure before it vanished.

Screaming Male

Location: Corby - Rockingham Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 10 April 2011
Further Comments: A driver and her passenger heard a male scream and glimpsed someone at the roadside. They thought someone was hurt, even suspecting they had hit a pedestrian, so turned back to have a look and called the police. Nothing could be seen, and a police search drew a blank.

Screams

Location: Cosgrove - Millpool

Further Comments: A girl drowned herself here after her true love was arrested; screams can still be heard as she goes down.

Floating Maid

Location: Cottingham - Bury House, Bury Close & the Hunting Lodge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A female servant of the house was pushed from an upstairs window by the butler at Bury House. Since then, her uniformed shade has haunted the area, looking for justice.

Escort

Location: Cottingham - Old Corby Road area
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This shuck was regarded as the traveller's friend, walking alongside anyone traversing the road on their lonesome. It would vanish into thin air if touched.

Kit Crewbucket

Location: Crick - Grand Union Tunnel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Little is known about this shade that haunts the canal tunnel, though it is also reported along other canal routes up and down the country.


A soapy 'person'.

Soap Bubble People

Location: Dallington - Church
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 1907
Further Comments: Two girls entering this church found it to be full of people, though they appeared to be made of a material like 'soap bubbles'.

Strafford

Location: Daventry - Wheatsheaf public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1645
Further Comments: Appearing to King Charles I twice before the Battle of Naseby while he stayed in this hotel, the ghost of Strafford tried to give the King advice concerning the upcoming battle. Charles I ignored it, and lost the fight. A place in Northampton also claims this event happened under its roof.

Bookkeeper

Location: Delapre - Delapre Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The building is home to a former librarian who died many years previous.

Thrown Cutlery

Location: Denford - Cock Inn
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 08 May 2013 & 12 May 2013
Further Comments: A poltergeist was blamed when cutlery was found thrown all over the floor in the kitchen, but the cutlery holder was still on the shelf. A few days later, toilet rolls were found all over the floor in the ladies' toilet, removed from a closed cupboard.


Lydia Atley's ghost.

Lydia Atley

Location: Denford - Lane between village and Keyston (likely no longer present)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid to late-nineteenth century
Further Comments: The killer of Lydia Atley was never caught (or at least never found guilty) and Lydia's phantom took to haunting the area of the lane where her body was discovered fourteen years after her disappearance.

Shady Figure

Location: Desborough - Newbottle Lodge (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Haunted by several strange sounds and bangs, the owner once saw a black shape in front of him - he shot the entity with a rifle, and although the projectile passed straight through, the haunting subsided and eventually halted.

Butcher

Location: Desborough - Private flat along Station Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1978
Further Comments: This flat was said to be haunted by a phantom butcher, believed to have killed himself.

Swinging Pictures

Location: Desborough - Private residence along Havelock Street
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1980s
Further Comments: This polt was blamed for swinging pictures that hanged on walls, pulling bedcovers off during the night, and stealing small items that would reappear months later in plain sight.

Breaking Glass

Location: Desborough - Private residence, location withheld
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2003
Further Comments: This property was haunted by the sounds of breaking glass and voices coming from an unknown source. A member of the Tresham family, who was a Jesuit Priest during life, was blamed for the haunting.

Grey Lady

Location: East Carlton - East Carlton House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early in Summer Evenings (reoccurring)
Further Comments: One storyteller reported that this building was haunted by a lady that had jumped to her death from a balcony after being jilted by her lover.

Reverend Francis Tolson

Location: Easton Maudit - Vicarage Pond
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Eighteenth century
Further Comments: The Reverend Francis returned shortly after his death and was reported to have been seen wandering around the pond in his garden. The entity was exorcised by twelve priests who probably thought it bad form to have one of their own walking around in the afterlife.
