Funeral

Location: Liverpool - Thomas Lane, Knotty Ash
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1891, midnight
Further Comments: A witness was said to have watched a phantom funeral occur, complete with coffin and guests (with deathly pale faces). The witness was later told that many years previous, a secretive funeral had occurred along the road, setting off from a nearby hall at midnight.

Stroking

Location: Liverpool - Unidentified property, city centre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1934
Further Comments: Three generations of the Collins family and two lodgers fled this property the day after moving in. During their first night, one lodger heard footsteps and felt his bedsheets being removed from the bed, the eldest Collins felt a small, soft hand stroking their neck, while others heard running footsteps and felt 'something' follow them up the staircase.

A Five Shilling Encounter

Location: Liverpool - Unknown house in Field Street
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: September 1904
Further Comments: Hugh Morgan was fined five shillings after being caught smashing a window of an empty house which was said to be haunted. Hugh claimed he was attempting to lay the ghost.

Footsteps

Location: Liverpool - Unnamed Ladies' School
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1900s
Further Comments: A classroom in this school was locked up after staff and students heard heavy footsteps walking in the adjacent room but could find no one within. Dust on the floor was undisturbed. A local story said that a murder had been committed in the room many years previous. Before the building was taken over as a school, stories of ghosts were rumoured.

William Kennedy

Location: Liverpool - Walton Gaol, prison cell G2

Further Comments: Executed for murdering a policeman in the 1920s, Kennedy's shade remains in his former cell and continues to unnerve inmates.

Overwhelming Presence

Further Comments: It is said that ever since the last steam engine left this site, an evil, repressive presence has descended upon the area.

Monk and Nun

Location: Liverpool - Walton Park / Rice Lane

Further Comments: A local legend says that a monk and a nun were executed in the area after they were discovered having an affair. Another legend says that the children which the nuns had out of wedlock were buried along the lane. All are said to haunt their respective areas. A photograph taken in the area in 2012 was said to show a nun, monk and some of the children.

Monk

Location: Liverpool - Walton, road close to St Mary's Church

Further Comments: A bus driver on his way to work watched a monk cross the road in front of his car. The driver slowed and watched the monk vanish, initially believing the figure had gone down a subway. The driver later learned that the area was supposed to be haunted by a monk and nun.

Brother or Sister

Location: Liverpool - Well in Everton area, but covered over pre 1859

Further Comments: The site of a fratricide, the well was at one point considered haunted by the dead sibling before being covered over.

Young Man

Location: Liverpool - Westfield House, Westfield Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1975/76
Further Comments: This phantom figure came and sat with one witness as he lay in bed, entering and leaving the room though a wall. The ghost's voice was said to be kind and gentle, and during life the man would come and play with the children here - the sighting occurred in a former children's playroom.

Rumoured

Location: Liverpool - William Lockerby's home (no longer standing), Lockerby Road

Further Comments: William Lockerby, after whom the street is named, owned a large house along the road, which had the reputation of being haunted (by who or what is not known).

Figure with Green Light

Location: Liverpool - Woolton Road, Allerton

Further Comments: Walking home late at night, a witness came across a shadowy figure holding an old fashioned lantern which glowed green. The figure walked quickly, crossed the road close to the cemetery and vanished into thin air.

Piping

Old Lady in a White Hat

Location: Newton le Willows - Private residence, Fern Avenue

Further Comments: A family living at this council house moved in with neighbours after encountering a ghostly older woman wearing a white hat. Bangs, taps, and sounds of breaking glass were also heard.

Bride

Location: Newton le Willows - Willow Park (and other meres and woods in the area)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1947, and September 1949
Further Comments: This woman in white is said to be a bride murdered by her husband on their wedding night hundreds of years ago. She may have last been seen by a married couple who spotted a figure with folded arms standing amongst trees. Two years prior to this sighting, two women passing Castle Hill observed the phantom woman in white.

Pale Figure

Hanging Highlanders

Location: Newton le Willows - Hermitage Green Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: August (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Caught by Cromwellian troops, these Highlanders were immediately hanged on the surrounding trees. The sound of running can be heard around the anniversary of the executions. A couple of people here in January 1990 heard loud drumming which moved down the lane, though nothing could be seen.

Modern Myth?

Location: Sefton - Church and roads in the area
Type: Werewolf

Further Comments: First-hand accounts appear to be rare, but one story says a nurse and her taxi driver both spotted a werewolf in this area.

Green Lady

Location: Sefton - Fields by the church

Further Comments: At least four army cadets returning to their HQ observed a green lady wearing an old fashioned dress and cardigan. Although her legs could not be seen, it looked as if the figure floated while crossing the fields and heading towards the church.

Presence on the Stairs

Further Comments: A witness here heard the front door being opened by key - when she investigated, she saw nothing, though felt an invisible presence pushed past her.

Little Boy

Further Comments: One man twice spotted a phantom little boy in the living room, while other family members heard strange sounds or felt 'someone' watching them.

Karaoke Screaming

Location: Sefton - Private residence, Park Lane area
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1994 to mid-2000s
Further Comments: The poltergeist here would unlock doors, turn lights on and move furniture around. In one instance screaming lasting five minutes emerged from a karaoke machine which had been stored on top of a wardrobe untouched for over a year.

Floating Seaman

Location: Sefton - Punch Bowl Inn and nearby churchyard
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1973
Further Comments: Thought to have drowned at sea and his body stored in the inn until burial, this blue clothed sailor has been observed floating around the building. Sometimes only his head and shoulders are visible, protruding from a misty base. The entity was also once seen nearby, appearing to be digging at a grave in the churchyard.

Chair of Despair

Location: Southport - Oast House public house

Further Comments: A chair in this public house was reported as being cursed, after eight people who had used it died.

Face at the Window

Location: Southport - Private residence near Meols Cop Station
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 2012-2016
Further Comments: Lights would turn on and off, small items would be moved or thrown at occupants, and footsteps heard coming down the staircase. A shadowy figure would occasionally be spotted, and the face of an older person appeared at a bedroom window. The activity ceased after a blessing.
