Ticking

Location: Liverpool - Private residence, Calgarth Road, Huyton
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: July 1977
Further Comments: A couple left their home after a ticking started in their home. Clocks were stopped and removed, yet the sound continued and would move around the property, sometimes coming from the walls. An exorcism did not help, and after the ceremony, a coffee table was found upturned and pictures removed from the walls.

Moving Ornaments

Location: Liverpool - Private residence, Clubmoor

Further Comments: A family moved out of their property after enduring many strange events, including lights which switched themselves on and off, doors that opened unaided, and ornaments that moved by an unseen hand. A local press story claimed a vicar and housing officials also witnessed paranormal activity.

Thrower

Encyclopaedia Moving

Location: Liverpool - Private residence, Hale Road, Speke

Further Comments: An outbreak of poltergeist tricks occurred in this property, including a set of twenty encyclopaedias moving from a chest of drawers to a table, a toilet flushing itself and bangs and knocks. Shadows of people would also appear on the walls of the living room.

Rapping

Location: Liverpool - Private residence, Halewood Road, Gateacre

Further Comments: The entity in this home could be heard rapping and occasionally tossed items around. The activity ceased after one occupant shouted 'go to hell' after small objects were thrown at him.

Floating Shadow

Location: Liverpool - Private residence, Holt Street
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: 1956
Further Comments: A mother of two awoke in the early hours of the morning to see a shadow glide past her bed and move towards her daughter's room. As it moved, the entity turned its head to the woman, as if watching her. It vanished through the wall to the child's room. The woman was convinced that the shadow was a message that one of her children would die, and within a week, her daughter passed away.

Smoker

Location: Liverpool - Private residence, Huyton area

Further Comments: Lights would turn themselves on and the smell of tobacco would fill the air. One visitor to the site reported seeing a black figure pass a bedroom door. The haunting was blamed on a former chain-smoking occupant who had died prior to the new owners moving in.

Tall Woman

Location: Liverpool - Private residence, Norris Green

Further Comments: Despite living in their home undisturbed for 32 years, the Morgan family moved away after experiencing a poltergeist outbreak which tapped on their bedside table, flicked lights on and off, and held both occupants down on their bed. On one occasion, Mr Morgan watched a tall ghostly woman wearing a poke bonnet manifest; Mr Morgan fled the room. Although the family moved to Runcorn, the entity followed them.

Pushing

Victorian Woman

Location: Liverpool - Private residence, Old Swan area

Further Comments: A witness staying at this property watched as a woman in Victorian clothing manifested close to him. The woman was grey and transparent, and moved in a weird, juddering way. The witness threw his bedcovers over his head in panic, waking his girlfriend who, after turning on the light, asked, 'you've seen her, haven't you?'. The witness only ever spotted the Victorian woman once.

Bouncing Ball

Location: Liverpool - Private residence, Old Swan area

Further Comments: Over a three year period, the five occupants of this detected house would hear a bouncing ball the source of which could never be discovered. The bouncing was originally heard coming from the attic but eventually spread to the entire house and would occasionally wake the occupants late at night.

Pusher

Further Comments: A family left their home after a presence pushed a teenager, and a woman felt herself held down on a chair by an unseen force. Residents said they would feel something clinging to their clothing.

Water Water Everywhere

Further Comments: This property has been subjected to dozens of water-related occurrences, including a leaking roof (although six roofers could not find a leak), water pouring through open windows, and an unexplained flood in the basement, where the water disappeared as quickly as it came.

Strange Man

Location: Liverpool - Private residence, Woolfall area, Huyton

Further Comments: Soon after a child in the house complained about the strange man standing by the toy box, various bumps and footsteps began to be heard in the house. A heavy chest of drawers tipped over, taking two people to lift it back into position. A local priest blessed the property.

Swishing

Location: Liverpool - Private residences, Edge Hill area

Further Comments: Footsteps which shook the bedroom were felt by two witnesses at different times, while a 'swishing' was heard as if someone were walking toward the kitchen and brushing the wall with clothing on several occasions. Large metal objects such as baking tins and colanders mysteriously disappeared and were never found. Another house on the same road reported poltergeist activity with heavy furniture being moved across the door in an empty bedroom, trousers flying around the room and people being awoken by loud clapping sounds.

Lady in Red

Location: Liverpool - Royal Court Theatre

Further Comments: One member of staff witnessed a ghostly older lady wearing a red cardigan in the bar area, while a few years earlier two stagehands watched a ghostly Cavalier emerge from a wall who turned to face the men before disappearing through the same wall. The site is also reputed to be haunted by a former caretaker.

Bride

Further Comments: The old house which once stood here before the hospital was the scene of the ultimate wedding day disaster in which the bride fell to her death from an upper story window while her guests partied on below. Her shade has been reported by nurses in the newer building.

Liver Birds

Further Comments: Several myths exist concerning the two metal birds perched on the Liver Building, all relating to the birds coming to life and departing the city, resulting in its downfall. One myth says the birds face away from each other to ensure they do not fall in love and become animated, while another story says if an honest man and a virgin woman meet and fall in love in front of the birds, the statues would spring into life.

Former Slaves

Edinburgh

Further Comments: A white city appeared for a short time over Liverpool - it was thought to be a mirage of Edinburgh, though no one could identify any of the buildings.

Mile Long Craft

Location: Liverpool - Skies over Anfield

Further Comments: Lee Jones, his wife and her mother watched a huge saucer shaped craft hovering in the sky, clouds occasionally covering the object. A passenger jet that passed near the craft enabled Jones to estimate the ufo was about a mile long. Other witnesses reported seeing the craft throughout June and earlier in the year.

Cellar Dwellers

Further Comments: Liverpool's oldest pub, the Slaughterhouse is reported to be haunted by a couple of shades who tend to enjoy lurking in the basement and making fleeting appearances in the bar.

Mary Norris

Location: Liverpool - Speke Hall

Date / Time: Mary unknown, hunting dogs in 2007
Further Comments: Rather than face up to her husband's massive debts, Mary is said to have killed her son before taking her own life. Mary is said once to have manifested during a dinner party, most guests watching her disappear through a wall. Other people have reported the sounds of children crying during the night. A night fisherman at the pond heard a voice ask, 'have you caught anything yet?', but upon turning around, he could not see anyone nearby. Finally, two witnesses out walking after dusk in 2007 could hear the sound from a pack of hunting dogs emerging from dark woodland but were unable to spot the source. A modern myth appears to place a werewolf on the site.

Tablecloth

Location: Liverpool - Springwood Avenue, close to Allerton Hall

Date / Time: Circa September 1979
Further Comments: Two teenagers jogging along the avenue heard what they thought sounded like a horse a short distance behind. Turning to have a look, they observed what appeared to be a tablecloth and a horse's body without a head running along. Frightened, the pair ran faster and when they turned again, the entity had gone.
