Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Elliott O'Donnell carried out a vigil here with two other people to try to discover whether there was any credence to the rumours the site was haunted. While they encountered no ghosts, they did experience lights switching themselves on.

Bill Terriss

Location: SW3 - Brompton Cemetery

Further Comments: Another area reputedly haunted by Bill Terriss, a former actor who is very busy in the afterlife. There is also a rumour that the Courtoy mausoleum found in the cemetery, the key for which is long lost, is some kind of time machine (hence it also has the local nickname of the Brompton Tardis).

Brown Bear

Location: SW3 - Glebe Place, Chelsea (aka Henry VIII hunting lodge)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Bears, brown, white and black in colour, have all been reported in this area - a once popular place for bear baiting. A man on horseback has also been sighted, riding in the area, and an unidentified home along the street was reputedly haunted by the sounds of choking.

Former Resident?

Location: SW3 - Henry J Beans (no longer open), Kings Road, Chelsea
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 2010
Further Comments: Reported to make appearances when the site is almost empty, this poltergeist has been known to throw plates and ice cream scoops around. One staff member said that the entity is not nasty, but just likes its privacy.

Curious Crowd

Location: SW3 - House along Brompton Road (may no longer stand)

Further Comments: A haunted house along this road attracted so much attention that police were called to dispel the crowd - arrests were made and people appeared in court.

Pig-Faced Woman

Location: SW3 - House in Markham Square

Further Comments: This phantom woman was said to be completely naked, bathed in light which emanated from her, and as having the face of a pig.

Flustered by Women

Location: SW3 - King's Head & Eight Bells public house, Cheyne Walk
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The agent at work here is antagonised whenever a new female member of staff begins work - for a few days afterwards, it pushes past patrons on the stairs and plays with the gas taps and the heating in the basement. Cheyne Walk itself is reportedly haunted by a bear - it once was a popular place for bearbaiting.

Victorian Maid

Further Comments: Over a hundred years has passed since this woman died, but she carries on carrying trays for her long dead masters.

Woman

Location: SW3 - Private house, Milner Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1950s?
Further Comments: The owner of the property, in a 1955 newspaper interview, claimed his to be the only haunted house in Chelsea; a woman who did not want to marry took her own life in one of the downstairs rooms in the mid-nineteenth century.

Pianist

Location: SW3 - Private residence, Whitehead's Grove
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early twentieth century?
Further Comments: While renting a property along this road, the family heard their piano being played, although upon inspection, found the room empty and the piano closed. The family would also hear footsteps walking around after dark, laughter, and would find their bedding moved from the bed and placed on the floor nearby.

Nellie Melba

Location: SW4 - Bingo hall along Clapham High Street

Further Comments: Nellie fell from the roof of this former theatre, after climbing to the roof in a drunken haze. Her shade, headless, was reportedly seen by some staff members near the area of the former stage.

Whistling Stone

Location: SW4 - Clapham Common

Date / Time: Story circa early twentieth century, although stone removed around 1900
Further Comments: The whistling heard coming from the stone on the common was said to be quite sad, with one story saying the tune was made by a murdered pedlar.

Sarah

Location: SW4 - Plough public house, Clapham Common

Further Comments: Dressed in white, Sarah has been seen standing in the pub's bedrooms, her raven hair running over her shoulders. The ghost may be linked to the discovery of a secret, bricked up room in 1970.

Elvis

Location: SW4 - Private flat, Tilson Gardens

Further Comments: A family living in the flat were terrorised by several strange happenings, including the manifestation of a 'demon' which took the form of Elvis Presley. An exorcism appears to have sorted the entity out.

Bearded Man

Location: SW5 - Private flat, Courtfield Gardens

Date / Time: Late nineteenth / early twentieth century
Further Comments: The cousin of the property's owner fled the house after encountering a bearded man dressed in white who manifested in a bedroom. The figure walked around the room three times before walking through a wall. A serving girl in the household also left her position after encountering the ghost.

Workman

Further Comments: A man dressed in dark, old looking workman's clothing has been spotted early in the morning and late at night. He walks to the end of the platform before disappearing.

Slit Throat

Location: SW6 - Devil's Alley (no longer present), connected to Fulham Palace Road

Further Comments: Stories concerning a ghost with its throat slit apparently kept people from using this alleyway at night.

Miss Flemming

Location: SW6 - Fulham House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1956
Further Comments: A visitor to the site in 1956 watched a phantom woman cross the drill hall. A member of the cleaning staff told the local press that while alone on the site, she would hear footsteps on the staircase. The building had previously been the Fulham House School for Girls, run by a Miss Flemming, who became allocated blame for the haunting. In the late nineteenth century, a guest spotted a figure later thought to be Oliver Cromwell, who would visit the site when owned by his family.

Further Comments: Bishop 'Bloody' Bonner ordered over one hundred heretics to be burnt at the stake during the reign of Mary I. The bishop's phantom reputedly walks the grounds and haunts his former bedroom.

Jack Keene

Location: SW6 - Fulham Road, and narrow alley which led to Wheatsheaf Terrace

Further Comments: Jack Keene, landlord of the long-demolished Wheatsheaf inn, haunted the area riding on the back of a black donkey with a dog running alongside him.

Milk Float

Location: SW6 - Private flat off Fulham Road
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1927
Further Comments: Workers decorating the flat after the death of the tenant witnessed a tin of milk float through the air and a wobbling cup cross the floor. At the end of their decorating session, one of the men vanished, reappearing unconscious a few minutes later and appearing as if he had been flung around a bedroom (although the man could not remember what had happened). After the flat had been sold, there were no further disturbances.

Baby Visitor

Location: SW6 - Private residence along Wandsworth Bridge Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1997
Further Comments: Two people lying in bed with their newborn daughter nearby in a cot watched as their bedroom door opened and listened to disembodied footsteps which walked over to their daughter. After a few seconds, the footsteps walked back out of the room and the door closed.

Caring Woman

Location: SW6 - Private residence near Farm Lane

Further Comments: A witness awoke to find a female figure standing at the end of their bed. The witness called out for their friend, who was in another room, but the female figure walked away and disappeared through a wall. The ghostly woman made another appearance to the witness during the same night and had a caring presence.

Lady Rosamund

Location: SW6 - Rosamund House (no longer standing), Parsons Green Lane

Date / Time: Nineteenth century
Further Comments: The ghost of Lady Rosamund haunted this site. A permanently closed door in the cellar supposedly led to a secret passageway connected to Fulham Palace.

Douglas Drew

Location: SW7 - National Laboratory of Psychical Research, 16 Queensberry Place (now College of Psychic Studies)
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: February 1928 (Drew), 1926 (Zugun)
Further Comments: Harry Price brought Drew, an eight year old child who apparently had an attached poltergeist which would move chairs, to the centre in an attempt to use the power to induct an electrical current that would shatter glass jars. The test failed. Eleonore Zugun was also tested on the site a year prior; she created apports and demonstrated stigmata-like injuries.
