Giant's Stone

Location: Clonbulloge - Clonkeen standing stone

Further Comments: The giant Fionn MacCumhaill tossed this stone from Croghan, around twenty kilometres southeast. As the stone rolled across the ground, a dog stood in its path and stopped the stone with his paw; the paw print is still seen on the stone today.

A flying ship makes an escape from Clonmacnoise.

Anchor

Location: Clonmacnoise - Unknown church

Further Comments: During Mass, the congregation at this church were interrupted as an anchor dropped from the sky and caught on the church door. The people investigated and spotted a ship floating above them; one of the crew diving overboard and swimming towards them through the air towards the anchor. The congregation grabbed the sailor, but the bishop demanded that they let him go. As the group released the man, he floated upwards and once on board the ship, someone cut the rope attached to the anchor - the ship sailed off into the sky. The anchor was said to have been on display at the church.

The Thin Man

Location: Clonony - Clonony Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: Spotted by a man driving past the ruins at night, this gaunt figure appeared to be bathed in misty light.

Floating Candles

Location: Coolderry - Leap Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2002
Further Comments: Strange lights were constantly reported floating around within the building before conversion into a family home in 1991. Since then, other ghosts have been reported within, including an old man seen sitting by the fireplace and a woman in a red dress.

Sarah Blundell

Location: Edenderry - Blundell Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The phantom Lady Blundell, who died in 1701, periodically appears on the lawn surrounding the ruins of the castle. Folklore says there is a network of tunnels leading away from the site.

Gold Protector

Location: Ferbane - Coole Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The castle is haunted by a spirit that protects a hidden pot of gold. If the treasure is removed from the castle, it is said that the ghost will not rest until it has returned the pot to the hiding place.

Tall Man

Location: Kilcormac - Temora House (destroyed 1930)

Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The ghost of a tall man would appear on the staircase of this manor house. After an arson attack burned the building to the ground, locals claimed to have seen a ghostly ball of fire moving around the estate.

Princess

Location: Kinnitty - General area
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: The village takes its name from a myth which says a princess named Eitigh is buried beneath the location.

Hugh

Location: Kinnitty - Kinnitty Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This spooky monk, nicknamed Hugh, walks around the castle many centuries after his death, and is said to communicate future events to those who want to listen.

Devil's Room

Location: Shinrone - Cangort House
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The local priest offered to play cards with the first owner of the house, who responded, 'I'll rather play cards with the devil'. When the devil turned up at the house to take the owner up on his offer, the room where the horned one waited was promptly bricked up (and remains so to this day). The property is also haunted by several ghosts, including horses that are heard galloping but never seen.

Blue Girl

Location: Tullamore - Charleville Forest Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This young girl fell while playing on the staircase, dying on the floor below. Her ghost is seen on the stairs or felt rushing past witnesses. The other spooks include a young boy (seen in the same location as the blue girl), a dark hooded woman accompanied by a party of monks, laughing children in a former nursery room, and the sounds of two Englishmen becoming drunk!
